I signed up with Hungryroot through a social media promotion. First, I apparently made a typo in my email address during sign up and there was no email verification step to prevent this. As a result, I couldnt access my account for about a week. The companys customer service team took about six days to respond.My order was scheduled for September 28.The tofu sent in my delivery expired September 21. WAY before would have been even SENT. How does that happen? The stir fry veggies stank and were covered in slime. The broccoli was turning *** and slimy. I had to throw out nearly half of my order for being spoiled, on the day I received it. The order was a day late with no explanation, and one of the gel packs had exploded all over everything. I had to wipe down the packaging individually to salvage anything at all. I documented everything with photos. I emailed customer service a week ago and no one bothered responding. Youd think they would take a little more care with someones very first order. I am canceling my account and writing a review here so that perhaps others wont go through the same experience. What a complete waste of $85.

If I could give zero stars I would! I originally liked that they let you pick your food items, your meat, your starches, your veggies, etc. and you could put "never " on the items you did not like and never wanted to receive. The time and effort is worthless, in the first 2 shipments I was sent and paid for over 6, yes 6 items on my "never" list and the best part was , one of the items they not only sent once, they sent on both orders, the only 2 orders I had ever received from them. In 3 weeks I ended up with enough potatoes and bread products to last me 10 to 12 months yet my cost was 120.00 for each shipment. Boy, bread and potatoes have sure gone up! Then within 48 hours of receiving my 2nd shipment I tried to call them...NOOOO they will not list a number to call, only text or email. That way they do not have to listen to all their screw ups and they can ignore what they want to ignore, as with my cancellation! Zeroed out my "cart", postponed" my next delivery sent them 3 emails and 1 text, but did thet stop them? Not at all, they sent out another delivery, well I contact my bank NOT to pay them a single dime for anything and that shipment can sit there and rot for all I care as I never felt safe being as the food was never cold when I opened the box anyways.

I was happy to find this as an option for a meal kit service, as most only offer meals and not also groceries. As someone with chronic health issues, I have to eat a special diet, and I live in a relatively small city in the midwest so it is hard to find some specialty items. I live a busy life and don't exactly want to run around town finding this or that. I also have a two-year-old son, and so meal planning and trying to eat a special diet can be hard at times. Between me, my husband who is a vegetarian, and my son who is a picky eater - things can be tricky. So I was wanting to eat healthier but I didn't know what to do, where to start, or had the energy and time. That's why I decided to try Hungry Root, and I am so glad I did. I started getting their meals back in December. One of the selling points was I would have to go to the store less (as I am high risk) during the covid madness. Since I have started I have lost 25 pounds, learned how to eat a healthier diet, got pregnant (which is amazing because I have fertility issues - PCOS), and most of my health symptoms improved. I found out in February that I was insulin resistant (it's like pre-pre-diabetes, my body makes TOO MUCH insulin) and so I had to change my diet. The thing about this company is the meals are really designed by chefs and dieticians, both my husband and I could tell a marked improvement in the way we felt after eating their food for about a month. I found out that a lot of their meals are centered around cruciferous vegetables - which come to find out help balance hormones and do a lot of other amazing things. This discovery alone has revolutionized my health but I also learned how to eat in a different way using their recipes. I also really like that they have healthy snacks, sweets, and other whole foods-focused groceries. And a lot of the groceries and ingredients they carry are from small family-owned companies that use sustainable practices, which is great! Their packaging is mostly (90%) recyclable except for a few grocery items they carry but they can't help that (cuz they don't make it). Their ice packs double as plant food! It's a little pricier than going to the store but it's a trade-off for convenience and inspiration! These recipes are SO HEALTHY and DELICIOUS! And I honestly don't know of a meal kit service that has the same prices as groceries from the store... My only complaint with them is that my box came open during shipment ONCE and was not deliverable. But they refunded my money and more than compensated for it. The customer service does take a day or two to get back but they are very helpful and kind. Honestly, in this time of covid, shipping things can be hard and there are going to be issues here and there. Like that other reviewer said, the box got stuck in a truck overnight, that isn't really Hungry Root's fault, it's the shipping companies. And my complaint should be with fed-ex, not this company. I am glad Hungry Root exists and I will continue to get their delicious food and recipes delivered, it reminds me of the yummy food I had in NYC. :)
