This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

I ordered this from a TV ad on 5/15/08 which stated that you had 30 days to use it before being charged. I was charged immediately in the amount of $47.90. I finally received the Magic Jack and it does not work on my computer. There is not a telephone number for the company with the package nor is there one provided on their website.

Please advise smb!

I feel like I have been taken to the cleaners ! I have tried to get in contact with ANYONE at the majic jack site and just get the run around. They say you need a RMA (return mail authorization) but you can't get one! They say you are unknown to them or have no proof of purchase. I don't remember what card I used so I don't know if I have been charged yet, but I sent the jack back way before the 30 day period! I sent it to the address in Fla.The post office receipt says it is there but has not been picked up yet. Why isn't the FCC or someone getting involed in this scam?It is obviously a scam! I will never, NEVER order anything from TV again. I did write the channel that aired the show and told them of the scam but have not heard back from them. I wish I had done a little more research before ordering. I am usually VERY careful, but it got by me, I think because it was on TV and was a shopping network...now I find out there is NO savings shopping network! Next stop BBB in FLA!

I ordered the magic jack a while ago and got it about a week and a half after I ordered it and it has worked great. I have recommended it to many of my friends and everyone who has tried it has loved it. I have heard many people who call in on the Clark Howard show have tried it and loved it. This is a legit company and if you give them a change they will try to help you to the best of their ability but most of the time that is not necessary as it is very streamlined. The fake saving shopping network program seemed a little strange but other than that this is great. THIS IS NOT A SCAM AND THE FCC HAS APPROVED IT so I don't know where some people get off calling it a scam. Pretty much anytime it doesn't work is user error and a simple chat with their tech support will fix it.

Obviously, your computers are way out of date. Every computer (even a 4 year old desktop ) I have used Magic Jack with has worked. I believe it may require a USB 2.0 port ($20 - $40 adapter for a desktop or laptop ) and it did not through a USB 1.1 Hub. I even got it to work with a laptop using a Sprint Air PCMCIA Card, but there were some voice quality issues using the Sprint Card configuration. Voice quality was excellent with Comcast internet. I would also check to see if your internet service is running slow ( check with www.speedtest.net ) or blocking Magic Jack. Magic Jack was very easy to register and setup. A customer introduced me to Magic Jack.

Magic Jack LLC is a dishonest company. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, DISGUSTING, HORRIBLE, THE WORST EXAMPLE OF CORPORATE AND MARKETING FRAUD!

I don't care if this product works or not, the company is immoral! They promised free shipping on returns, they don't want to honour it. No phone #, no way to contact them. No address.

THEY HIDE ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. THEY HIDE BEHIND CHAT REPS FROM OVERSEAS. INCOMPETENT AND UNHELPFUL.

We bought two Magic Jacks and one Premium Plan and are completely unsatisfied with tech support and lack of customer service. If this company isn't a scam then their business practices are on par with local drug dealers.

If anyone is saying they are great, then they are probably relatives of the scammers or the scammers themselves in disguise.

Save yourself some $$ and get VOIP via Vonage or your local cable company.

I received magicjack & it worked on & off. I had to start using it in my laptop cuz of a virus on the pc. Since then every time I take it out of the usb there's more pressure on the usb connector on the magicjack. well I took it out of the laptop for the last time because it came apart this time! I tried to find an 800 # like everyone else & came up with the same solution-had to go online & do live chat. Everything seemed fine after speaking with 2 people (that really needed to get an education, not just in communication but all around)& I was supposed to receive my magicjack replacement in the mail in about 2-5 days. I saved my chat & emailed it to myself. The next day while checking my email I noticed there was an email confirming my order of magicjack. I'm thinking NOW wait a minute! I already purchased 1 & dont want another! so I find that they're charging me for a new one but it's only a HOLD on my account for not only 39.99 but for shipping as well. So I tried to reply & it came up as address no longer existant. So I read the email again & saw there was another means of contact...the live chat. well here we go again! I had to talk to 2 different people that needed English education this time & found that not only would they only send me a replacement if I would purchase one 1st but since I had a hold on my account from any unathorized internet charges but I couldn't have it sent out if I didn't take the hold off my credit card. He assured me that I wouldn't be charged & that it was only a hold for 30 days. I said well you'll receive the magicjack & then you send me out another one. There shouldn't be a charge for something you're not being charged for. He said it would only WORK that way because they couldn't or wouldn't send a new one out unless I had a 30 hold on my credit card. I told him that I do ALOT of internet shopping & no one has ever done business in that fashion. I told him I would not verify it & that they would get it & then they should return my replacement. He said he coudln't. So I've wasted about $70 on this thing & the clincher is it's my only phone. I have just been shafted by my ortho doctor & lost my long term disability insurance checks & had to give up my at&t phone. now I have to give up this means of making phone calls too. I guess I should go to my local news station, online for now.

I ordered the magic jack due to free trial and would not bill for 30 days however at the end said it would bill immediately. so i closed out without hitting the ship now. guess what order still go processed and shipped out even after I replied to the order email within hours saying I didn't want it if it was billing me now. I then talked to a customer service rep who assured me that i would get a credit back on my card until my 30 day trial and allow 3 days what a shock nothing was done about it after all most a week so i ask today and he says well no credit so i said fine I am shipping it back would have just put return to sender on it previously. I explained don't want to do business with a company that is not standing behind its word for the get go. the red flag should have really been for me when they shipped it without conformation. I even contacted my bank about the charges as well. Customer service is a scam. I highly doubt I will see my money back now even after i return this thing.

BUYERS BEWARE OF MAGIC JACK - I ordered 4 of them and had no complaints with the first four but my next two orders were never filled even though my credit card was charged. After spending 45 minutes on their stupid Live Chat being asked for the same info. over and over again I was finally told that my orders had been "killed" with no reason given. They would consider filling my order I gave them my full credit card info. over an unsecured connection, even though my card had already been charged for both orders.

MAGIC JACK is a criminal enterprise.

Hello everyone on the magic jack bandwagon, and here I thought, I was the only one and so I am not. I got mine on ebay from seller who since was deactivated and paid for it with paypal. I've had the thing for 2-3 months by now and cant really complain too much about its performance. However, today, 9/29/08, the stuff hit the fan. I logged onto my computer at 10 am, by 11am magic jack was history! I then spent the entire day on line with their rude and stupid "customer reps" on the chatline and got nowhere, lipservice, run around, NO SERVICE! The blue light does not stay on after plugging it into the usb plug, I tried plugging it in on each of them, still no go. I started having problems 2 weeks ago when I got the "USB Hub" popup that never stopped. I thought it was my 3 year old laptop having a problem but my lappy is not the problem, Magic Jack is! One person posted on here having had the same problem with the "USB HUB" popups and having bought a hub router said didnt work either. I am not going to buy one either but have reported to ebay what happened to me and they said that paypal would refund my money. One thing magic jack cannot do is take more of my money, they have no access to my credit or debit card and cannot take money from my paypal unless I authorize it. Then I found this website on a search and within minutes was speechless to read about so many people getting the same or worse runaround with magic jack, but am glad on the other hand that I am not the only one. Well, I logged onto the MJ chatline one more time and popped this website on the chatscreen whereupon the person immediately "terminated" the chat. The reason they are not "available" by phone or email is that they KNOW this product is not fit for usage and they don't want to hear this OR pay refunds OR give replacements. Instead, they have cheap labor drones on the frontlines taking the hits. Fine mess this has gotten us into, but, nothing goes unpunished. Cheer up folks, with the useless piece of garbage they have put out into the marketplace, their "business" won't last too long. Don't get mad, get EVEN! Post everywhere how bad this thing is, pretty soon people will stop buying it and that will be the end of it.

For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. - Ecclesiastes 12:14.

I ordered 2 Magic Jack and was told i would not be charged for 30 days, however they put a hold on my debit card for the amount of 2 units plus I bought 1 additional year of service on each, so for the SO CALLED 30 day free trial I did not have access to my money $140... So there's no such thing as a 30 day free trial, since you can't use your debit card for food...
Units still sitting in the box, trying to sell them...

I ordered a Magic Jack in August. It worked reasonably well for the first month and a half. A week or so after they got my payment, the program went crazy, with constant "Autorun.exe" errors. The program also kept cycling on and off, so if it ever did log on, it shut itself down before you could make a call, then restarted itself, ad-infinitum.

I spent two hours online with a high level tech support, deleting and reloading the program, installing "fixes", making deep tweaks and modifications to my computer (such as changing permissions on the USB ports, deleting files and folders, turning off the fire wall, etc.).

Next, they asked if I was using the extension they provided to reach the USB port, and told me to plug Magic Jack directly into the USB. Unfortunately, the thing's so fat that it wouldn't fit in my port, unless I removed every other USB jack.

Then they tried to get me to delete all unnecessary games and files from my computer. When none of that worked, they told me to run a speed test (which showed my download speed to be 5023, and upload to be 286. Then they tried to blame it on my service provider, and claim I should request them to improve my upload speeds. They said if that doesn't work, try it on a friend's computer. I don't have any problems with any other applications running on my computer, and used Vonage for years without any such incident.

Sorry, but if two hours of deep tech support can't resolve the problem, MagicJack is not ready from prime-time, as far as I'm concerned. Back to Vonage for me.

This is a great product, I have owned it now for alittle less that a year, but I have know complaints. I accept any problems that occur because THIS IS STILL CHEAPER THAT THE BIG PHONE COMPANIES. So you have to realize that you are getting value to this, it might not be perfect, but you have to remember that the monies saved over time more than make up for the time spent talking and complaining to the CSR's. Also, you have to remember this is a new company, they for sure will have their growing pains, but I am sure in time it will be resolved.
No one person or company is perfect there will always be problems.

I am sure that all the people complaining are the minority in this product. They have sold so many units and the number of complaints are less than probably 1/1000 of a percent.
It is also my opinion that some of these complaints might be made up, probably from people that worked for the big phone companies. They know that this product can put them out of a job, but what can anyone do? this is just the new thing to use, I am sure that in the future you probably won't even have to pay for phone calls. This company was just smart enough to offer something that could benefit the end user as well as put money in their pockets. To me it is a Win-Win situation, but more so for the public that the company.

I have had issues not with the product as I never received it but with the billing and customer service departments. It is a joke to think that you can get anything solved by messaging someone whom is not properly educated in their job or with the issues that may arise. The billing department authorized my card not one but twice. Then stated that my card was declined and that they only authorized it once. After attaching a copy of my bank statement they just stated that on their end they show one authorization and it was declined. Wow, the facts in black and white and ignorance came full circle. Their customer service manager was clearly not well trained as every other word was misspelled and grammar was not a strong point. Come on this was a simple conversation, my ten year old has better communication skills. After three customer service managers and an hour of my time, I was finally able to cancel my order.
I would not say that they are a SCAM but I feel that they are a questionable company. As for those of you that believe that if the FCC approves something it must be ok. Wow!

My parents got one, thinking it might make a good backup phone. They are not strong on computer skills, so they thought it was not set up properly, asked for some help. It was set up properly. It would not accept calls. A message said that the number [protected])(why an extra 01 on the end?) is not available, offers to put you into voicemail. It made one call using a headset. It was very distorted and echoed. It could not get a dial tone or make a call from a telephone.

Later it would not work at all.

MagicJack is worth every penny you spend on it and not another penny more. It's cheap but it's a total piece of crap. They can't even tell you the recommended specs of the computer you need to run it's software on. It has an ugly interface that puts a big splash screen you can't get rid up in the middle of your screen frequently. When things go wrong, which is often, it pops up a browser window to their useless and horribly ugly website and that usually takes a nice hit on your PC. It is just ugly and not pleasing to use and it loses your contacts and history whenever it crashes. Call quality is not as good as Vonage or other VoIP phones I've used even on very fast modern computers on very fast Internet connections (I'm a software engineer). You can't buy a stand-alone phone router so you have to keep your PC on. Their support is horrible even if you can manage to get ahold of someone.

So if your adding an extra line go for it but beware.

The claims by Magic Jack that you will receive a free 30-day trial is a complete lie. What they do is put a hold on your money in effect taking it out at the time the order is placed. It is only the paperwork for the charge that is held for 30 days. In addition, if you are purchasing a Magic Jack for someone else check carefully they have used the correct delivery address. In my case the only thing correct about the delivery address was the city. Even after I contacted their livesupport it was wrong and I received no confirmation of the change. Magic Jack may be a good product, I don't know I have yet to get past the incompetance of their ordering system.

Don't bother with the BBB. Compain to the Federal Trade Commission and the FCC. These are the people who have teeth and carry badges and handcuffs. The BBB can do absolutely nothing but keep records. Also, if the US mail is involved, you can complain to the Postmaster General in Washington.

beware Magic jack and their "SPECIAL DEALS"

I bought MJ in feb 2008 and it runs out feb 2009. I decided to buy the special platinum extension for 5 years @ $60 ... and save $40. when i entered the confirmation code, it told me that it was extended for 4 years to 2013. 5 years would extend it to 2014.

The only way I knew it was 4 years was to activate the given code. I tried to settle the problem to new avail with the most rude "service tech" I have ever dealt with, GABRIELLE. The broad told me that since I used to code to see what the new expiration date would be, I could not cancel and get my money back even though I am paid to feb 2009:

Gabrielle: Have you already applied to codes to extend your years?

myself: yes I have because that is when I noticed that MJ shorted me a year

Gabrielle: Okay

Gabrielle: You cant be refunded because you already have applied it

myself: I obviously cannot converse with you, so what is the next step to speak with a civil person?

Gabrielle: If you obviously cant converse then it shows how stupid you are

myself: just give me an address to move forward with my complaint

Gabrielle: I cannot give you an address

Gabrielle: hahaha

Gabrielle: Good Bye James

Gabrielle: And thank you for not understanding a thing

From what I determined, there is no way to recover or cancel. There is no way to get to first base and am at the mercy of some tech person with no recourse to resolution. They just ripped me off and do not allow any room for a complaint

I bought Magic Jack about a month and a half ago. I thought it sounded like a good deal. I paid extra so that I would not have to pay a bill for five years. I started having problems with the Magic Jack like, buzzing in the phone, dropped calls, constantly having to restart the systems, and an echo.

Each time I would contact the company via a chat room. This in its self was funny because they do not even use their own product. Today was the final straw. I could not even reboot the system.

I was on line for about an hour and they finally decided it was internet service. I asked about getting a refund on the extra five year service I paid for and they stated that they could not refund it. I have a report with the BBB and I hope for a positive outcome.

Magic jack advertised unlimited calling for Local and longdistance calls in USA, after using it for one and half months they blocked the service and asked to call a given number(automated) when I call this number after lot of trials got to a rep who says my magic jack was blocked due to high call volume (advertised as unlimited) and referred me to fineprint in agreement saying they can cancel the service if they F****ing feel its over used... the rep refused to give me what my usage was and what the limit which they call as over usage.

After signing up last week and doing some Google searches on getting the device to work. I came across some complaint sites about Magicjack not being unlimited. I signed up for unlimited and it was advertised as, "Use the magicJack free for 30 days, make all the free calls you please. 100% Risk FREE - you pay nothing". It's right there, "MAKE ALL OF THE FREE CALLS YOU PLEASE". Also on their web page "Reviews" it says, "Free magicJack and a years unlimited USA calling".

Well went to their website and got in an online chat with an operator and then a supervisor, I questioned them about the unlimited plan. At first they would avoid the question by answering this,

"please be assured that your calls are free". I got the run around two or three times and then it went like this, "We don't have exact limit for magicJack - magicJack phone calls" and "Our service includes Free calls. But, we dont have the exact duration or limits".

So I ended the chat after hours or arguing with them and came back like a Vonage customer thinking about switching. He's a sample of the chat,

"No, Limited plans Nancy, The good thing about this is you renew the services yearly" and "Yes Nancy, you can call your Mom as long as you want" and "No Hidden agendas or even hidden charges Nancy" and "I am assuring you that you can talk all you want, and I will also assure you that you will Get a full refund within your 30 day trial after that I cannot say if you can Get your money back" and "Please do not worry Nancy you are given 30 days for a trial and a full money back guarantee. you have a month to try it out Nancy and we never terminate services not unless your on your expiration date".

Let this be a warning to anyone thinking about buying this device. It's not what they advertise.

Also, it demands a lot of computer resources and pop-up window (right in the middle of your work). They also force you with advertisement that you cannot disable.

People keep saying there is no phone number, but a previous post gave that information. It appears that most people with complaints bought this device from the Magic Jack website - big mistake after reading and going to BBB.

If you're going to buy one, get it from a trusted source like Amazon or one of the shopping networks (I forget which one that sells it) that clearly state their return policy and will do anything to keep you as a customer. I don't have one of these, but the major concern seems to be the 30 day free trial and the return ability; aside from the over billing and the unit working.

If you buy from a trusted source, you don't need a free trial because they not only will not over bill you without your consent, but they will take it back; usually within 30 days. So it really doesn't matter if it works or not, because you can return it to these mega shopping outlets, without dealing with the manufacturer.

It is curious that people who like this device, really love it. But those who don't like it really hate it. I'm not understanding this. I realize this is a complaint site, but reviews on other sites suggest about 56% of people are satisfied. Not a good percentage, but it is a majority. I'm wondering if the complaints are more about billing and customer service, rather than the unit itself.

I would also suggest that when buying online or by phone, buy a debit card and put $50 on it or whatever you need, so that when that is gone, go get another one. Use the extra left over dollars or cents at the gas pump. Always replace it, rather than funding it so you won't run the risk of being charged again.

My GOAL here is to inform you about my experience.

I paid about $47 for this little magical device. I am not relative or scammer of magicjack, and I have no interest in getting more people onboard this device.

My primary phone is my cell, magic jack is just my backup in case I want to save some cell-phone minutes. It is a great concept, and fortunately for me, it works very well.

You cannot think of it as replacement of a land line.

Now, assuming this thing works for atleast one year, I would end up paying a little less than $4 per month which includes unlimited calling to Canada. That is pretty cheap. And you get what you pay for, cheap phone calling service. For the most part I am satisfied because I am paying only $4 per month.

I tried making a Vonage phone call from a Vonage free phone trial in the mall. I could hear the other end very clearly. However, other party said, the call wasn't clear. So, my conclusion is, MagicJack for $4 per month in 1st year and lot less after that is a good bet if you are CHEAP to just get VOIP phone instead of real phone.

I am guessing, that VOIP through Comcast or Cable Vision must be superior, but I wouldn't want anything less than a landline if I am paying over $25 per month for phone service. Only reason why I don't mind magic jack is, its not my primary phone service.

Do I recommend you buy MagicJack? YES, only if its not your primary line and you are looking for something cheap, AND if you don't mind keeping your computer on when you are using phone service.

FINALLY - I have never used their tech support or customer service, so I dont know how it is. But at this price, I don't think they can afford to provide me anything but subpar service. If you are expecting anything better, you are expecting too much.

Ordered magic jack first part of November and never received. They took their $46.90 and on December 18, 2008 I chatted with couple of people (that's all y0u can do) and now told that when you 1st order that's when 30 day trial starts. They WILL NOT send you an RMA to return and WILL not give you a phone number, nothing, which is just frustrating. They tell you that you are stuck with it, so you are out that money. It freezes up the computer and after researching have found many people that say Magic Jack is just a fraud and scam company! Anyone out there know what state they are in so I can start the process of notifying Consumer Fraud, BBB, and District Attorney's office?

The Magic Jack website is very misleading. I activated my Magic Jack today. I wanted to upgrade to the 5 yr plan and purchased what I thought was the upgrade. Instead, I received a confirmation email stating that I'd purchased a new magic jack and the address listed in the order lacked a house number.

The confirmation email stated that if I wanted to change the order, I need only reply to the email, but upon sending a reply I received another message telling me that the reply address is no longer active. This new message had a 'Contact Support' link. Upon clicking the link, you receive a another message stating 'The resource you are requesting was not found. Please contact our site', and you're immediately transferred to: http://www.magicjack.com/9/index.asp where the video of the daughter of the inventor of Magic Jack echoes the praises of Magic Jack, such a pathetic move by Magic Jack. I really feel sorry for that little girl. It'll be quite an eye opener for her to find out that her dad is a fraud, and used her to promote community trust. And, of course, on that page you have many links of information that will get you no where.

I telephoned my bank to cancel the transaction, but was advised that since the transaction was pending, there was nothing they could do until the money posted. My bank gave me a telephone number for Magic Jack billing: [protected]. When I telephoned Magic Jack billing, I received a recording giving me a choice to either go to back to the website or to telephone another billing number where a live operator would answer 24/7. That number is: [protected] . Needless to say, when I telephoned, I was placed on hold for over 15 minutes listening to their holiday music. Then the music went off and it appeared that my call was picked up, but no one would say a word, the silence went on for an additional 5 minutes, and then I was hung up on. I never spoke to anyone. I made an attempt three times to reach a live billing representative, only to net the same results.

I trust that my bank will assist me in the return of my money, so I'll chalk it up as a 'lesson learned'. However, I do want to blast Los Angeles Times, CNBC, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, BBC, LAPTOP, and PC Magazine for continuing to allow them to use their company name and logos as endorsements on the Magic Jack site. I really believe that as consumers we should also hold these companies accountable for the scam we have been subjected to. We trust these entities to provide us accurate and trustworthy information, and Magic Jack knows that, that's why these companies are listed on the Magic Jack site.

As SCAMMED consumers, I hope you will take the time to write the companies listed above and let them know how they have assisted in scamming and hurting the community. And, insist that they remove their company logo from the Magic Jack website.

Karen: Can you change it for me?

Magic Jack states there is NO CONTRACT TO SIGN. When you plug in your magic jack, it then up loads
it's software and agreement that you are bound to. The last paragraph contains BINDING ARBITRATION
and that's the WORST KIND OF CONTRACT for anyone to sign. This is FRAUD. They say there is no Contract. After you buy the product you then learn their is BINDING ARBITRATION. You have no rights in BINDING ARBITRATION. The ARBITRATOR always rule in their favor and not yours, even after you hire an
attorney for more than $100, 000.00 to prove you are right AND you can not win against them. Normally in a Court of Law you are innocent until proven guilty. In Arbitration, you are guilty based on false allegatins until YOU CAN HIRE AN ATTORNEY FOR $100, 000.00 TO BABYSIT YOUR CASE FOR 3 YEARS and you still can not win in ARBITRATION. Once I read the agreement and saw the BINDING ARBITRATION, I new to cancel out before agreeing to their FRAUDULENT BINDING ARBITRATION. Remember, ARBITRATION VOIDS ALL YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOR A JUDGE AND A JURY. AVOID ARBITRATION LIKE IT'S THE PLAGUE. I am speaking from experience. I have been tortured IN A $10, 000, 000 ARBITRATION SUIT for 3 years . I did not even have a contract with the company who thru me into ARBITRATION. And, I am still trying to prove I do not have a contract with these MAFIA COMPANIES' ATTORNEYS AND ARBITRATORS. Also, you are responsible for paying the attorney fees and arbitrators fees for both sides which will equal hundreds of thousands of dollars. They will then get a judgement against you and THEY WILL take all your owned assets. All this based on the false advertisement of NO CONTRACT. All the arbitrators and attorneys are in on the take. ARBITRATION IS MAFIA'S NEW TOOL.
