Was treated very poorly by a Longmont Colorado rep. Also got the runaround when I tried to cancel policies. When my policy cancellations did come they were addressed wrong. Horrible customer service. In the year I had a policy not one followup call or letter. No desire to help me save money on our house and cars. Only interested in writing a policy and going on to the next one. You would think an insurance salesperson would want to help his "friend". Hopefully this review helps other people not make the mistake I made. I am happily with country insurance with all of my policies
They would only cover 50 percent of the damage to my vehicle
I was recently hit by an individual who has Shelter insurance. He contacted his insurance agency right away as I was standing there. He told the customer service agent (with shelter) that is was completely his fault and that he did not see me. When the claim went the adjuster she told me that they would only cover 50 percent of the damage to my vehicle.
That because my story and his story were different that was all they would pay for. She refused to tell me what was different and when I told her he admitted fault she told me that was with their customer service department not her and they are different. What good is customer service if what is said to them does not matter.
Did you follow-up with your insurance company? Did they agree or disagree? I have been in a few accidents and it is amazing how much the story of how an accident happened changes from day one to the next day. I know it is annoying for you, but you never know what recorded statement the other party gave Shelter. Customer Service representatives are not adjusters and don't have the training to properly take a recorded statement, therefore it only makes since to rely on the recorded statement provided to the adjuster, instead of something that is said to an untrained employee.
Not good Insurance
10 years with Shelter Insurance, 2 claims ever, including this one. Brand new nissan maxima 2010. Bent my rim when I hit something unavoidable in the road. Shelters fix for this was to put a refurb rim on my brand new car. We're not even talking an aftermarket rim (which would have been fine) They want to put a damaged, then repaired rim on my car. This is wrong on so many levels! The fine print on the refurbs states after a rim is on a car, if something goes wrong with that rim, the lifetime warranty is void! Needless to say- we are pulling our insurance with them.

I have to disagree. I can't imagine an insurance company putting an unsafe part on a vehicle. They would not take the liability of putting an unsafe part on a vehicle. Most the time refurbished parts are parts that were on a previous vehicle but were never damaged. Refurbishing can mean many things like shined, brightened, or reused. People for many years have gone to salvage yards and purchased parts off of wrecked vehicles. The parts they purchase are factory built parts that are identical to the parts they have on their vehicles. I don't see a problem with using refurbished parts because they are still safe, "factory" made, and look the same. Also, most insurance companies will let you order what ever part you want to use, but you will have to pay the difference of the part you select, and the part they are offering you. If you want aftermarket parts put on your vehicle, then pay the difference.
My family has had several claims with Shelter Insurance and have always been very pleased. The adjusters have always contacted us with 24 hours, and several times they looked at our wrecked vehicles within 2 days. We had a couple situations where refurbished or aftermarket parts were put on our vehicles and the parts did not match up exactly. As soon as the adjuster saw the difference they talked with the body shops and told them to fix our vehicle correctly. I personally believe Shelter insurance is one of the best insurance companies on the market!

Welcome to the "all they want is your money club" and the "they AIN'T gonna take care of you club".
First call a State Farm or Farmers agent. I know that when I have had claims issues, State Farm has more than taken care of me. Travellers didn't do so good. A friend that also has State Farm, had a tree fall on his daughters car that was in her driveway. They paid more than the car was worth. They had a person on scene and let the homeowner guy get a couple of quotes from others and they paid the amount of the quote that the homeowner presented to them, which was more than the one the claims person presented. Now that! is doing the right thing. Sheltie NEVER WILL...
If you have already had the roof fixed and paid for, you may not have a chance, but, you can get several residential house builders (you can probably get them to do it free with a premise to get a quote to repair roof deck and attic damage) to inspect the interior or underside of the roof deck and if their conclusion is that the roof damage is away from the fireplace area and is more related to a wind and hail damage then take them to the cleaners and if your builders say that its wind and hail then take it to your states Insurance Department. As it is now, you might call the state dept of Insurance and look at filing a claim of fraud against sheltie.
They try to find some little something, build a story around it, sell it to you, and if you buy the story (fraud) then they are off the hook because you signed that you accepted their claim.
Shelter is so, so, shameful.
I have a serious complaint against Shelter Insurance. I have had their Platinum Policy coverage regarding house insurance since 1993. We have had wind and hail damage; the claims person said Shelter will only replace the shingles that show damage, that they will not replace the whole roof...so we end up with patches, that don't match, and the roof appearance is totally unacceptable. The claims adjuster brought some roofing guy with her; when they saw the roof damage and the interior ceiling damage, they figured this was going to cost Shelter quite a bit of money. The adjuster said she couldn't give us an answer, but that she had to go back and 'talk' to her supervisor...what she was really doing was looking for reasons not to cover (-pay-) our claim. When she called back, several days later, she said the water damage to our ceiling was a maintenance issue, that Shelter wouldn't pay for it to be painted because she saw evidence of previous problems around the fireplace chimney site...that there was 'new' caulking around it. We purchased the house when it was 3 years old, we had no idea of 'previous' issues and did NOT do any caulking what so ever as she was intimating. Shelter insurance is total ###...My agent, who had been calling all along since I phoned in the claim, and askig me how things were going is now ever so silent...ever since the claims adjuster called with her "decision' NOT to cover our claim, our agent has not called once. So, we end up with a patched, ragged looking roof, on an expensive house in an upper middle class neighbor hood. Our home owners association is not happy with the looks of our roof, and we are not happy with it either. We cannot afford to replace the roof, ..(the roof was damaged by wind and hail) and pay for the all the repairs that our policy is supposed to cover... since we KNEW we had coverage for that, we felt our policy should cover it. Our Platinum pollcy DOES cover wind and hail damage but the claims adjuster decided we only warranted to have only the shingles damaged by wind hail to be replaced .How idiotic and stupid can it get . This is such a scam...we've paid thousands of dollars in premiums for Platinum policies on this house and our last house...a total of 19 years and this is the sort of crap treatment we receive. We are practically accused by the adjuster of knowing we had previous issues with leakage around the fireplace chimney and that the roofing around it wasn't installed correctly...even though we gave her proof that we had purchased the house 3 years after it was built. She still said it was a maintenance issue...yeah, like we're supposed to do a weekly roof walk to check ...what a bunch of garbage. WE DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS ANY ''ISSUE'' UNTIL WE SPOTTED WATER DAMAGE ON AN INTERIOR CEILING. Now, Shelter has squirmed out of covering what they should be covering. Needless to say, we're going with another insurance company from this point on.
I totally agree with you! Shelter Insurance appears to be organized to devalue the vehicles of parties that are against. I was hit by a person with shelter insurance and it is just terrible in trying to get the auto part of my claim settled.
did you get a police report?
call an attorney and go to the mattress', an attorney will get the guy that hit you's testimoney, the call records of the customer ervice as well as the recording of that call, if they dont produce it they are being their Criminal self, just my opinion there on their true nature.
when you want to be taken care of: DONT CALL SHELTER INSURANCE!
Scrooge would be proud of them.
Racism
My parents are foreigners of the US and I have been translating for them for years. We have had Shelter insurance for so many years that we lost count. Our agent Ken Sellner of Urbandale Iowa has been great, he has helped us with a lot of things. In the mean time Johnston had a really bad case of hail a few months ago and the adjuster came out and looked at our roof and siding and told us to just patch it up, he gave us like a $1600 dollar check to do that, and my parents told him on the spot that the adjuster Chris was discriminating and that every company that came out told us that we will have long term problems with leaking, and a 2005 built home shouldn't have it so we didn't cash the check and we "patched" up the roof and siding with our own money as we watched neighbor by neighbor change their roof, of course they didn't have Shelter. Today I spoke to Richard Mutten who is one of their head guys as I watched from my porch how the neighbor to the left of us was changing their roog and told them that every single neighbor except the guy on the left of us who is Asian is having their roof changed and they are trying to tell me that our two houses might be angled differently and the wind blew differently at out homes ..is he serious?!?!?! He tried to tell me that the damage was not that much when my mom's car which was outside was totaled because of the hail that day. The nice fellow across the street has told us to sue and said that we are being discriminated against and that's what we'll do, we've never sued anyone but there is a first time for everything. Next time, they'll think twice before hiring racist adjusters such as Chris and people like Richard!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Racism.. Really? To me your complaint is based on claim settlement, than racism. You have not included any factual statements that would lead anyone to believe that "Chris" and "Richard" are racist. It would be different if one of them made a racist comment or if your neighbor was insured by Shelter, was Caucasian, and they were given a new roof over yours. However, none of the information you have provided leads me to believe that any part of the conversations were racist. It appears to me that you are "crying woof" for no reason!
It appears to me that your parent's home policy may provide different coverage than the neighbors' policies. Or, the damage on their roof is actually different than that of the neighbors. Many people don't realize that hail damage is like tornadoes, it can hit different homes and areas differently. The hail size can be different from one neighbor to the next, and therefore the damage can be different as well.
Also a thing to note, contractors will ALWAYS tell you that patching a roof won't work. They do that because they want you to hire them to do a roof replacement.. Why you ask... Because they get paid more. Many roofs can be patched, and have been patched over the years. And if done correctly the roofs will provide the same protection as it did before.
Will not pay claim
Shelter Insurance Company has been extremely unfair with my company. In May of 2009, my used car dealership was hit by a drunk driver who was insured through Shelter. The driver, age 19, hit four cars total (at 2:30am on a Thursday morning). Of those four cars, one was considered totalled by a Shelter Insurance claim adjuster. We were told by this Shelter Insurance adjuster that when they total a vehicle (pay off on it), they use examples they get from insurance salvage pools (thats what they go by-according to her). She told us they would offer us $5, 300 for our "totalled" car (at first). When we questioned it for being so low (2007 Chevy Cobalt LS with 15k miles) she came back and said, $7, 300 instead. While that seemed to be negotiating well to the average onlooker, it seems as though ALL of the "examples" from salvage pools, (you know, the ones they "go by"?) were bringing well in excess of $10k, the majority being $12k+ for the same year, similiar miles, 2 door, etc, etc...So, basically, we are being offered $5k less than every example we can find on the same auctions they are looking at to get their comparisons/examples. Funny how that works...Unfortunately there is more. These cars, after they were damaged, were taken to a tow lot and stored. Shelter Insurance adjuster, says that Shelter doesn't pay storage for vehicles...Really? I am positive that you have and that you do...so why not for us? We've had to pay the storage costs for damages that your client brought upon us. Are we honestly responsible for this? Or what is insurance for? I have police reports, you insured a drunk driver, and I have multiple, multiple examples of cars with MORE mileage, and LESS amenities than ours that were paid off much more than you are offering. I have read reviews stating that Shelter was very friendly and this and that. Well, my opinion is that it would depend on which agent, adjuster, etc you were talking to and honestly, isn't it like a waitress? Does is really matter how nice she is, if she only brings you half the food/drink than you paid for? Nice is all well and good when you're talking to the friendly secretary on the phone, but when someone does something to you that absolutely cripples an already fragile business during bad economic times, then I could not care less whether that person is cheerful that particular day or not if they are NOT paying their bills like they're supposed to...

Brandon has full coverage insurance and at the time he purchased insurance they said his medical would be covered in wreck, and now during fact. not He has full coverage insurance on his motorcycle which coverage damages and medical expenses...in this case they say that they will not cover his medical since it was a motorcycle..They didnt not tell his at the time, and we cannot find that clause in his insurance forms...They fill if they try to pursue they will drop their insurance. which is house, auto, etc...
They will not pay any medical expenses.
I filed a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General. They have NOT paid out on our claim and they are illegally taking money out of our account two months after we canceled and switched to another company. I told the agent 6 times to stop taking money we switched and she said she refused to close my account until I sign a waiver. I said so you are going to illegally take money from me after I tell you no? How do you stop an INSURANCE AGENT from theft?
Insurance is designed to return you to the state you were in prior to an accident. I find it interesting that you claim you are being offered too little, but you never mentioned what you have in the vehicle. Insurance companies should only offer you what the vehicle is worth and we all know that the vehicle's value is based on the buyer. Yes there are books, websites, and and programs that can give you an estimated value, but only the buy can tell you the value. I can ask $65, 000 for my old truck, but it doesn't make it worth that.
I also find it fascinating that you had the vehicles towed away, when they are not being driven. Common sense tells me that I should leave the vehicles where they are at, or move them to the back of the lot. In now way would I consider having the vehicles towed to a lot.
What the heck? Can anybody clarify what this complaint is actually about?
Medical payment coverage is an option that can be added to your policy. When Brandon took out the policy on his motorcycle, did he opt for medical payment coverage? It tends to be more expensive when insuring motorcycles compared to insuring automobiles. Are you sure that Brandon opted not to have medical payment coverage when he took out the policy due to cost?
Full coverage means that you have liability protection (in the event you cause an accident) and coverage to repair physical damage to your vehicle. It does not necessarily mean that you have medical payment coverage.
Screwed by Shelter Insurance
On November 30th, 2008, I was rear-ended at a stop light in Ft. Worth, TX. The driver of the vehicle was from Oklahoma, and was covered by Shelter Insurance of Edmond, OK. Bottom line, I spoke with their claims adjuster, Ms. Konny Styles, who assured me Shelter would cover the cost of my repairs and a rental car. I own a ladies' retail clothing business, and December is a VERY busy month for our business. I was finally able to take my car in on Monday, December 30th, for repair, and picked up a rental car where Shelter told me to go, which was Enterprise Auto Rental. My auto body shop offered a FREE LOANER CAR while mine was being repaired; however, I let them know that I wouldn't need it, since Shelter offered to take care of that.
Long story short, I turned in my rental car to Enterprise on Monday, January 5, one week after picking it up. I was told that everything was OK. To my shock and surprise, I received a bill on my Visa card to the tune of $196.28 from Enterprise. Shelter Insuance denied full payment to Enterprise, asserting that they were only authorizing 2 days of car rental. (In case you don't read all the fine print on the back of the rental car agreement you sign, it states that if for any reason the 3rd party does not pay the bill, YOU are on the hook, and there's nothing you can do about it!) Shelter asserts that since their estimate states that it should take 2 days to repair the car, that equates to only 2 days of rental car expense. ABSURD!
Word to the wise...STAY WAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING OR ANYONE CONNECTED WITH SHELTER INSURANCE! They are not allowed to operate in Texas, and now I know why!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I find it funny that the repair shop offered you a free loaner car, but you chose to cheat the insurance company out of money to go through Enterprise. If my repair shop offered me a loaner I would take it because each time the insurance company is cheated out of money it means the cost of insurance has to increase.
I also find it interesting that you drug your feet on the repairs for a month, and you act as if the insurance company was at fault. You admitted that your business was busy that month, so it leads me to believe the delay in handling the claim was your fault, not the insurance companies.
I WAS FORCED ( OR FACED WITH PAY RENTAL OUT OF POCKET ) TO PICK UP CAR BEFORE IT WAS REPAIRRS WAS AN SHELTER STILL DID NOT PAY ALL OF RENTAL . NOW I AM GOING TO TAKE SHELTER TO COURT . MED BILLS NOT PAID EITHER .

I have a question for this person. Did you turn in the rental car immediately after your car was repaired? Or, did you keep the car for a couple days after the repairs were finished? Also, if the auto repair shop took more than two days to fix the car, why didn't you have the repair shop contact the Shelter Insurance claims adjuster to get an authorization to extend the rental period?
Finally, your assertion that Shelter Insurance "is not allowed to operate in the state of Texas" might very well be false. Is it possible that Shelter Insurance has chosen not to operate in the state of Texas? They are primarily a mid-western company operating in 14 states. Insurance companies do not have to operate in every state in the union...they can choose the states they want to concentrate their risk in.
Failure to accept resposibility for claim
I was hit buy a 16 year old kid who had his drivers license for all of about 6 days. He was drag racing with another guy and was traveling at speeds well over 10o mph. He came accross 2 lanes of trafic and slamed into my vehicle. The police report shows that he was moving at a high rate of speed and he was charged with Felony Reckless driving. There were 8 witnesses that viewed the accident and they all say that he was at fault and he was speeding. Now shelter is trying to deny responsibility and I am with out a vehicle and have medical bills out the rear end. Now I have to file suit and am planing to take them to the bank, and when I am done getting every thing out of the insurance company I am planing on sueing the pants off of the parents of the kid for letting an iresponsible punk drive there vehicle and act like an idiot. All they needed to do was fix my truck and pay my medical bills.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Johnboy1776... you read my mind on both situations. I am curious how the first complaint ended... Did she get the pants sued off? :)
Regarding the first complaint above...why are they denying responsibility? You did not explain. Something doesn't sound right.
Regarding the second comment...is it possible that the parents had the daughter excluded on the policy? You can have a child excluded from your policy if, for example, they are away at college without a car. Many parents do this to save money. If this was the case and the daughter came home from college...and she was still excluded (parents didn't inform insurance company), then Shelter Insurance would NOT be responsible. If this was the case, then you would have no option but to go after the parents.
Last week I was hit by a 21 year girl who turned out to be drunk, driving on a suspended license etc. The father wanted to pay it outright but we just wanted to go through their insurance to make sure everythign was done correctly. Well Shelter is claiming that the girl did not have permission to drive (her parents) vehicle and so they will not be covering our damages.

My mother and father are insured with Shelter. They have been with Shelter Insurance for about 20 years now. Here is the problem. This complaint appears to be towards a specific "sales Person" instead of the whole company. The insurance companies process what is provided to them by the "sales person". I question if you ever contacted the company directly, or if you strictly worked through the local "sales person". My family has had Shelter Insurance for over 20 years, and a few years ago our local "sales person" cancelled a policy on the wrong vehicle. As soon as we received the refund check we called the home office. They assisted us in cancelling the correct vehicle, and getting the wrongly cancelled policy active. We could never be more happy with an insurance company. We have never had a bad experience with vehicle claims, and have often times had adjusters out to look at our vehicles within 2 days. I think Shelter insurance is wonderful!
