We drove from the auto train in Virginia to Massachusetts. We stopped at a hotel in Weehawken, New Jersey. At the exit 16E - Lincoln Tunnel / NJ 3 / Secaucus there was no lane to pay a toll so we proceeded through. I just received a bill in the mail for the $4.90 toll PLUS a $50.00 administrative fee. We did not do anything wrong. I would happily pay the $4.90 toll, but I do have an issue with the $50.00 administrative fee.

Violation No. T132167750806-01

Desired outcome: Waive the $50 administrative fee

Same thing happened here. Are drivers required to have a transponer? Are drivers punished for not having a transponder? I live in the suburbs and rarely drive on toll roads but took a trip to PA from MA and was surprised to see a toll "violation" sent to my home after my trip. I am accustomed to getting the toll bill sent to my home with a minimal fee (in MA it is .60 cents) for billing and I realize that RMV action will be taken if the bill is not paid, I was unaware that not possessing a transponder would result in a $50 charge plus toll every time I used a toll road in NJ. Should NJ not be required to post this charge visibly on the roadway so that travelers are aware of this policy?
