Gold plating on sterling silver medals has deteriorated. My complaint history follows:
6/11/12: Comment: Re: 100 Greatest Masterpieces collection: The gold plating on several of my medals shows a purplish tarnish - some localized to an area, others on all surfaces. Some of the medals were never removed from their original packages. I was the original purchaser back in the 70's.
What can be done?
Response on 6/12/12: We are sorry to hear of the condition of your medals. Please be advised that The Franklin Mint does not have the facilities to repair this collection. There are many factors that can cause discoloration to metals and jewelry that we have no control over, such as the natural darkening of some metals with age, handling, humidity and temperature where they are stored. Tarnishing is a natural process that can never be completely eliminated, even with the application of gold. Therefore, we can only suggest consulting with your local jeweler or coin collector for their assistance in this matter.
My response 6/12/12: Thank you for your reply. The actual cause of this problem was improper surface cleaning of the silver base coupled with too thin gold plating - both Franklin Mint responsibilities. I will now have to have the affected medals stripped of their plating and re-plated.
I do expect Franklin Mint to stand up for their product's quality especially if you continue the use of Mint in your name. Please put me in contact with Franklin Mint's CEO.
Their response 6/12/12: Unfortunately, ownership of The Franklin Mint changed hands in the year 2004, and all records prior to that time were expunged from our database. For this reason, we do not have any information about a product purchased 40 years ago, nor would this product be inside of our return/warranty policy, and we would be unable to assist you in this matter.
