I replied to a "Craigslist ad for a Personal/Administrative Assistant. Reading it you would have thought the dream job had just dropped from the heavens. Momentarily I got excited, then decided to do a little research. I Googled Angel Investment Network and SCAM came up on about 5 different sites. I was going to respond back and ask for references on this company just to see what he says, and ask to speak with the last PA. Below is the email on craigslist I responded to.

I'm also a research journalist and I travel every now and then within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need someone who can help keep up to date with all of my activities especially when I'm away and amidst my busy schedule.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since moved on with her personal life and it has affected me in a way. I found her previously on the craigslist website and I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been.
Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work most times from your home as long as you have a regular internet access. You are also hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, this however does not affect your weekly wage.

Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life.

In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence;
* Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring;
* Organizing and maintaining diaries, memos and making appointments;
* Dealing with incoming email, faxes and post;
* Carrying out background research and presenting findings;
* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up;
* Arranging travel and accommodation
* Carrying out specific projects and research;
* Taking on some of the my responsibilities and working more closely with management and other staff related to me;
* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.
* Handling and monitoring financial activities.
* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.
* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise.
* General clerical activities.

Basic wage is $550 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I

believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in England now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.

I responded to craigslist's ad.. it's alittle bit different but definitely the same scam. This time they used the name Brittany M. McDowell. Beware, they're still out there.

After sending him the above info, I received this second email which I found to be completely fishy. Who hires someone to take care of their personal business without meeting or speaking on the phone? Too good to be true...

what the [censor], heres my email, as soon as i read it i was like wow this sounds great, i guess out of excitement and my need for a job i made an aim account and immediately imed 'kalma miller'...and gave my name, the adress of moms house, my phone number, and city state, what the [censor] can/will they do with this info? im really freaked out right now..
the only reason i researched is cause after i aimed my info they said email it to me instead im too busy and so i got in my email to reply and then saw the flaws the [censor] had made..so then i found this and now wtf

I answered the same listing posted on Craigslist about the personal assistant position and got the same email that you all recieved from some scammer. My email was the same as all of yours but the name on it this time was Robert Houston, the email was robert@drslumpfan.com. Good thing I decided to look into the company before I responded probably would have gotten into a whole world of trouble that I didn't need to be in, definately too good to be true. Googled his name and only thing that came up was information about things in Houston.

The content of the e-mail was basically the same. I decided to check out Angel Investment Network before responding and am glad I did.

I received the same email but a different alias. I thought this was going to be a great job while in college. I was mistaken after doing some research and found this to be a scam. I have gotten three emails from her and have also received the money orders. I AM NOT GOING TO CASH THEM! THIS IS A SCAM and they are fake but banks will not find this out until a week after you have cashed them and by then you have already mailed the money via Western Union, or however they ask you and they have the cash and you are in debt.

I have received three emails from a similar, she is a different alias but mostly the same. I have already received the money orders THESE ARE FAKE. So if you do receive them DO NOT CASH THEM It takes about a week for your bank to find out that they are counterfeit and will then put your account in the negative and if you have followed their instructions you will have sent them the cash. That will make you pretty much be screwed and having to pay your bank back the money that you transferred else where.

I understand these job offers that everyone is getting are fake, but what exactly is the scammer getting out of this endeavor? I know they are getting your name, phone #, email, address if you do respond to their email or send them a resume. If they do send a check to you, it is fake and you're in debt to the bank if you cash it and not to them right? What exactly would be the main purpose behind this scheme be then if your only giving them your contact info and nothing else, identity theft?

They are basically laundering money through you. They make fake money orders, you cash it and send them the amount asked to the next address and you are paid a small amount compared to what they send you. The bank finds out that the money orders were fake and you are in debt to the bank for the full amount.

I just received the same kind of stuff from two different people.. I realized it was a scam when ALL of the info was the same besides the names and locations.. Soo they have my info now. Does this mean I am going to receive packages and checks in the mail? This is terrible.. There is such a low number of jobs in my area, so I saw this and was interested, of course. Being excited about a great opportunity (so I thought) I replied with my info.. Do I need to contact someone about this? Do I need to report it? Or do I wait and see what happens? and If I receive something in the mail... what do I do with it? This makes me very nervous. It is ridiculous that people take advantage of someone like this.. and it makes me very angry to know that I fell for it.. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it. People beware of people like this! I came across an ad that read: Personal Assistant needed. I responded to the ad and was automatically "hired". The pay ranged from $300-$500 a week and they don't use the same name when scamming people but they are the same thing they tell you they will use the first week to test you then you get your first task they tell you that you will receive a cashiers check by mail and they need you to deduct your week pay then the remaining balance to either buy things for an orphanage or send the money through western union to the orphanage and it will usually be an orphanage over seas one of them was in Malaysia. I kept e-mailing back to get more information but when I asked them for a phone number and their home address for security purposes I never heard back. I wish I could give you more info on this but this was as far as I got. I knew from the first response to my email it was a scam how can you give some one a job and say your are the best person for it when you never submitted a resume or any information about yourself. I hope this will help people and keep them alert of scams!

Sorry for all of you, as well as myself who have fell for this listing. It sounded like a great job since I have been out of work for a couple months and having no luck. I was shocked to see a response from this person so quickly...and sure enough as all of you did I researched the name that was given to me which was Kalma Miller. And goodness am I thankful that all of you had posted what had happened to you because it just happened to me. Good thing the job sounded to good to be true because I would be pulled into that scam. Im also kind of scared because I to had forwarded my resume with my personal information! This man/women needs to be stopped.

I got scammed twice and he is going on craigslist postings in Sacramento by John O'Riley and
Jon Williams sent him my resume but didn't do anything else.
Here's his emails i emailed this scammer demanding to see credentials in my first email. [censor] recognized my email and resume and put fake credentials on the second one.

I wish i could let the whole world know so it doesnt happen to anyone else.
ive actually talked to this asian man over the phone and he has my address. i have a 1 year old and a 2 year old. i am scared for there safety, does he stop contacting you by phone and email once you click on too what hes doing. ? i am scared. i actually deposited the cheque he sent out too me. lucky i only got charged 9 cents for the check being a fake. i really dont understand how i was suckered in, i saw all the signs, but kept on thinking i had nothing too loose.

I got the same response, presumably after replying to an ad on gumtree.com in the UK. The alias was MARTIN EDWARDS (in capitals). Not sure which advert was the scammer's in the first place though... I may try and find it and report it to gumtree. But I suppose they post them regularly anyway. I didn't reply right away as the spelling and grammar were off, and there seemed somehow to be too much information in the e-mail for a first reply from a company - and it isn't exactly from a company either, but from an individual, with hints of dodgy dealings like 'drop-offs' and an 'issue on trust'. I suppose whoever it is has my CV now. But NOT my bank details. Phew!

I wonder if there is any harm in submitting my PO box to get the fake Money Orders. I'm not going to try to cash them, just frame them and tell people how I got it. It seemed like a fantastic job and I was pretty excited about it, sent a cursory e-mail to the person (now going by Sarah Stewart) saying I had some basic questions for her before I sent her any information even though all of the information asked for was on my resume. I also receive the same email, different name...had a hunch that it was a scam, so like everyone else here, I googled AIN and found all the scam reports. It's sad that you can't even search for a job without someone trying to scam you in some way. The internet=a blessing and a curse.

The first flag that came up in my head when I recieved his reply was that in the reply he used the name "David Klingerr". I could not remember the name I replied to, but I did not recognize this second name. The email I recieved from him is word for word like the ones you see above, save the name game.

I am going to put the URL for this page about the scam right here: Angel Investment Network — Scam / fraud
and then post this text on craigslist. Apparently the scam is where you go to jail for cashing a hot check, and the scammer keeps most of the money. The way to catch him is to forward some of those checks to the authorities.
