These bell and howell solar pir motion activated animal rpeller (Trade name for van hauser llc, are advertised on tv as "no batteries required" but when I received the animal repeller, the the instructions are that they do have rechargeable batteries, and there is a switch that can be moved so one can remove the rechargeable batteries and replace with alkaline batteries.
Since the repeller is supposed to produce a sound that only animals can hear if they are within 30 feet of the unit, I do not believe it deters any movement at all. While in my home, and after being outside for the sunlight to charge the batteries, I scratched the ground immediately in front of the unit, a red light was supposed to come on and the unit was supposed to produce a sould that only an animal could hear, no red light came on in the unit. I also replaced alkaline batteries, and still nothing happen.
Now, I have sent one unit back and ask for a refund, which they credited my cc. But they did not refund the $6.95 s&h, the cost of returning the unit was over 2usd to mail back. I believe that companies that sell defective products make enough on the shipping and handling tht they still make a profit after all, the product was made in china and they probably only paid a dollar or two to have the falsly advertised animal repeller manifactured and shipped to this company (Vanhouser llc) in new york.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I have a neighbor's dog similar a chihuahua in size it comes in our front yard and barks constantly in addition digs some of the flower pots that we had planted and destroys and unearthed the pot. I n view of these events instead of have an altercate argument with my neighbor I decided to buy this marvelous bell & howell humane animal & pest deterrent.
I have followed all the instructions but I must admit this dog is deft or the system does not work period. Therefore, now I am embark in to the task to recover the price of this useless gizmo
I agree that this product, is a defect, this product I purchased with Bell & Howell didn't work . My neighbors dog always come over and does his business in my flower bed, so I decided to purchase the animal repeller for $39.95...and I placed it right directly in my flower bed & in the sunlight. Guess what I saw ? Dog poop right in front of the animal repeller. What A waste of $39.95 this product doesn't work!
I to got ripped off with the small animal solar repeller. My unit was well charged and the red light would come on when I waved my hand in front of it. The first the unit was about 20 feet from my bird feeders but it didn't bother the raiding squrrills. The next day I moved the unit to 12 feet. Still no effect.
I'm also having to put up with my neighbor's cat and dog doing their business in our front yard. I purchased two Bell & Howell motion activated repellers last year and placed them strategically. The sensors worked properly with the red lights coming on when I moved my hand in front of them. Obviously, I was not able to hear any sound and since they didn't keep the dog and cat away from doing their business on my lawn, neither did the animals! Will B&H stand behind their products and refund my money? Time will tell...

I have read 4 comments. I agree with all of them. On one on the repellers I received, the light did not come on even after 3 days in tahe bright sun light. The light on the other one does come on, but makes no difference as far as punctioning. This certainly seems like another scam to get our money. I want a full refund and am incontact with my credit card company to help me! I am returning these things!
This ultrasonic motion device doesn't work. It's a total phoney. The question is: What do we do about it? Any ideas?

As you can read in my comments above (under Jerry N.), will the company stand behind their product? The answer is not unless you complain within 1 year of purchase. After I contacted their Customer Support they offered to replace the two units I purchased if I returned the ones I have. I declined the offer since all the lights work but the important feature, the high volume pitch sound that cannot be heard by any human being and therefore cannot be verified as to functionality, a replacement of the units would be useless. Yes, we have been scammed...

WTF did you expect? Repelling animals with invisible rays? I bet these genuises are wearing their magic TV bracelts, too. Probably look swell with their tin-foil hats.
This will make your life much more difficult, but never, never, never, buy anything from T.V. , infomercials, or china. All of these are determined to take your money and give you little or nothing in return. China isn't interested in quality products... Only in how to get your money. If they won't refund your money, or take back their crappy product, what is your recourse. Sue for a ridiculous amount of money, against a company over which we have no legal recourse at all, because they're in china. I suggest that you stop watching t. V. You could call your local pound and have these unleashed pets from the neighbors removed. Also, your friendly neighborhood seed and feed store has a complete inventory of deadly poisons for all occasions. Perhaps you could go see if they have one that will rid your neighborhood of it's biggest pest... You ! ! ! By eliminating you from the equation, we automatically eliminate the following: pets, pests, neighbors, pest repellents, t. V. , infomercials, china, crappy products and service, sub-standard products, deceptive sales practices, lousy customer service, product misrepresentation, and complaints. I'd list more, but then i'd have to raise the shipping and handling from $9.95 to $67.00 for the additional units that you received but did not order. Sure, you can return them, just pay the $97.00 return shipping. My personal opinion, television should not be allowed to be a method for the exploitation of the american public who are now so gullible that they never question anything. Zombie/lemmings ! ! ! Better get out the zombie/lemming repellant. The new version is powered by a nuclear reactor that is invisible and emits an inaudible signal that says "my owner is a stupid ###", over and over again.
I bought an animal repeller to keep squirrels from my feeders.Guess what, I have had them in my feeders all the time since.Would have been better off investing the money in shotgun shells. It does not deter the animals at all. What a scam.I had always thought Bell &Howell was a reliable name.No more. The box has on the bottom, manufactured in N.Y., N.Y.Is this a lie also?
they should have to refund all monies they recieved in these scams
I also purchased this phony animal repeller, which is a scam, they offered to replacement it free but wanted a credit card number and claimed there would no charge placed on it, right. They got me once not again BEWARE

- Well it would appear that I'm not alone in experience. I just brought one of these units home and stategically placed it in the back yard aimed at the two deer highways that are in our hedge.
- Being ultrasonic, I was concerned also as to how one could tell if it was working or not. While discussing this with my wife, our next door neighbour's cat appeared. It walked directly to the device and stopped in a perfect 'bird dog point' about two feet in front of it. The cat stayed there for about two or three minutes before slowly turning and walking away.
- Obviously the unit did detect movement & did emit sound which we couldn't hear. Did it frighten the cat? No. Will it scare away the deer that have been eating my wife's plants? If the cat results are to be believed, probably not.
- To be continued. :-)
I just installed two of these in my back yard about an hour ago. Ten minutes ago I just watched a squirrel walk within five feet of it like it was not even there. Don't waste your money on this item.
I bought this Bell Howell - animal repeller, is not working at all, I put in the new battery and change it again and it still not working; they refused to anwer my calls, so I can, t get my refund. They overcharge me for shipment fee and sent it on regular third class mail instead of UPS. Over all, it's a scam! Do not buy this product.
Did not work. I will be sending them back.
To gakno... From 79 days ago from my response... Wow, u have a few screws loose. Blaming "china" for the product that is being made there. All the big north american companies went to china to get their materials cheaper and went to china to get cheaper labor costs.
It is the quality of the material and the quality of the manufacturing that is solely up to the n. American companies that opted for this and overseee the production. The n. American companies are the ones making their own product, but just in a china, so blame them... It makes me sick when people say, oh, made in china, so it is not good.
If the n. American companies chose quality materials and made sure it was made to a higher standard, then that is what we would get shipped out of china.
For example, american eagle... Made in china clothes... Ae is the one that is making the money on every single item, bcuz it clearly costed them a lot less to make but yet it is being sold for the same price as when it was being manufactured here in n. America.
My kids love ae clothes and I let them buy it, but it should not be as expensive bcuz it was made in china... So who gets the actual profit, not china... Which is my point in showing you that you are a f'in ahole idiot for your stupid comment 79 days ago.
Have been using this product only a few days. Noticed it appears to repel the Squirls Ok. The bunny( Jack) rabitts don't appear to be effected, but they don't feed on the bird seed we spread for the birds and Quail, they just "rabbit" no pun intended thru the feeding birds, making "them" a pain in the butt. The Biggest failure of this product is that it has no effect on Rats. The vermine only sucumes to the pellet gun. The rats have gotten use to the flood lights being on; out of hunger, and this product has no effect. Blasting away is very proven, but with California gun and lead law Prop 65, not to mention animal huggers, guess I'll have to resort to traps. Nah! Our local coyotes can't keep up with the rats either. had 50 rats last nite! Wonder is there a place I can rent Owls? Seems the local Cooper Hawk has driven the owls out, but I refuse to shoot the hawk as it reduces the annoying morning dove population . I'm getting ready for tonite' time to Reload. Simi Valley, Ca.
BUYER BEWARE! This is most definetaly a waste of money! As I write this email, I am looking out my window in my back yard, and at this moment there are 3 squirrels playing around abot 3 feet in front of it!Every now and then, they look up at me as if to say "what a sucker you are"!
I bought 3 animal repellers for my veg. garden. The deer ate my green beans, lettuce and beet tops right up to within inches of the units. I paid over $100.00 for these and I will never, ever be scammed by cheaply made products fom China again. What a waste of money!
I bought one of these units to get rid of the ground hogs that have nested under my shed.
The first one did nothing but the ground hog babies like climbing ontop of it. I changed batteries, left it in the sun and nothing.
I called the seller and they sent me another. The ground hog babies liked this one better than the old one.
This is a rip off and Bell and Howell should be ashamed to have gone from the old company it was selling photographic equipment to ripping people off with this junk.
I ecently purchased one of thewse SO CALLED repellers. After I contacted the seller and told them it didn't work, they sent me a new one. To test it, I placed it within severl feet of my cats and nothing happened. They just looked at me and said-doen't bother me. Either the noise frequency is to high for the animals to hear, just like humans, or the whole apperatus is defective. NOW WHAT

I Just bought one held the phoney thing right up to a dog he just look at me never bark or even moved. The light was onin the unit. You would almost think the dog would blink or something. I agree Bell & Howell should be ashamed selling this item. Not good for their reputation. Real scam artist.
I became aware of and purchased this item in early Oct. 2011 being hopeful it would provide a safe and effective remedy to some of our backyard animal pest issues. Purchase of this item was to hopefully discourage and keep away small animals, including squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, rabbits, and even deer from becoming pests and a nuisance around our backyard birdfeeders and otherwise destroying a number of our adjacent landscaping plants.
I installed the unit within 6 feet of the bottom of our bird feeder and approximately 8 inches above the ground. After several days of use, I've continued to observe squirrels and chipmunks continously feeding around the bottom of our birdfeeder and within 2-6 feet of the B&H PIR Animal Repeller 50104 with no observable effect of the Animal Repeller. The infrared motion detector is apparently working properly since my wife observed the unit activating (red light sensor came on) when she moved within 25-30 feet in front of the unit.
The unit is equipped with a dual speaker which allegedly emits both sonic and ultrasonic sound to repell animals, both of which the instructions indicate are inaudible to humans. Therefore is difficult to know whether there is a malfunction of the sound or not and would require more sophisticated instruments to test than I or the average homeowner would likely have available.
Bottom line: After only two days of testing and observation of the unit's ability to perform in repelling such animal pests it alleges to do, my observations have so far shown that it has not effectively repelled squirrels and chipmunks within 2-6 feet in front of the unit, which is quite unsatisfactory in what I was expecting with the purchase of this unit. That said, I expect to return it for a refund, particularly since so many other commenters were similarly dissatisfied with the performance of this Bell & Howell Solar PIR Motion Activated Animal Repeller.
I have purchased a Bell & Howell Solar PIR Motion Activated Animal Repeller, did everything the instructions said to do and like all the other complaints, it does not work. Have tried everything. Attached are pictures showing the repeller and the squirrel sitting there looking at it. It was a pure waste of money.

i have 5 not protect raccoons squirrels etc.
Same here. This product doesn't work, period. Came in an offer from a credit card company. I'm filing my complaint with the credit card company as well.
To my surprise they seem to work well ! I am starting my second year with 2 of the Bell and Howell animal repellers. I have had severe deer problems in the past with much destruction in my vegetable garden. I currently have these products at either end of my garden and am experiencing deer damage only around the edge of the protected area. I have just ordered two more for better area coverage. Dick H. I bought one of your devices to put in my garden, before the squirles devoured everything in sight. The squirles enjoyed the tops and the gophers the roots leavin a net zero for my hard work. The next year I repeated my garden prodject which is approx 400 sq ft I built a fence around the entire perimetor with small chicken wire of course that was no determent for the squires so I pur a slick metal above the wire and set bacck and watched the squirles slide down the sides. I thought that was pretty cleaver however this year the ants consumed the entire garden I sprayed poison all over the place b ut to no avail, I finally gave up and save lots of water. Last year i got 50 ears of corn, and green beans galore, plus four monts of nice tomatoes. sorry but I can't give your product and credit, cmichaeld
I am writing about your pest repeller-2led #& style50197mo-4. My concern is iif this will hurt my bird which we have had for many years. I read the information that you sent with the repeller but has no information in it about birds. We do not want to use it until we are sure it does not harm him. I would appreciate it if you would please let me know.
Thank you

Apparently the little "red" light is the selling point of this product. We bought a packaged pair of these from Costco and had one in the front yard and one in the back (around a raised garden bed to keep our dog out of it, as well as any cats, possums,
and raccoons). I did notice that our dog didn't appear to like the device when the red light activated. But, the deer kept coming into our front yard as well as squirrels and a rock chuck. So do they work? I really don't know, but having one in the front yard of our new home in another state does attract some attention from neighbors. One of the devices stopped working and apparently would not recharge in direct sunlight so I replaced those batteries with regular AA batteries and the red light still didn't activate. There does not seem to be any place online to inquire for return and replacement of the malfunctioning device.
I have bought three Bell and Howell An8mal Off units last year. One caught fire that I have on camera. Can the company inspect the unit to determine the cause? We lost 7 bushes. Thank God kept our home intact.
I also ordered the animal repeller and I can't get it to work. The red light sensor comes on but animals still come around and poop right in front of the device. I don't think the speaker works. Do I need to activate the speaker some how? Please someone help. Device is not working. I even walked my minpin dog right in front of device and the sensor red light went on. Help!
I also purchased this product. The red sensor works but I think the speaker is not working. Dogs poop right in front or around the device. To test the device I walked my dog, minpin in front of the device and the ref light went on and my dog pooped near the device. Help! Do I have to do something to get the speaker to work? I wanted to purchase two more, but if product id defective will try another company.
