I am a veteran (Vet) working approximately 40 hours a week. Additionally, I have a wife and two young children. In February 2023, I enrolled in an online EET (Electrical Engineering Technology) course with the assistance of my employer’s tuition program. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to drop classes in November 2023. Life can indeed throw unexpected challenges our way.
Upon withdrawing, I was informed that all necessary arrangements would be handled, and there was no immediate action required on my part until I was ready to return. Initially, this seemed promising. However, in December, when I believed I was prepared to resume my studies, I realized I was not. A new issue arose: I needed to return funds to my employer within a specified timeframe after the end each term.
Initially, I worked closely with a financial aid staff member to submit and transfer vouchers from my employer for tuition payment. As part of this process, I inquired whether they could assist me in refunding the money to my employer. Unfortunately, this proved to be a challenging task for the staff member, and I was subsequently directed to speak with other individuals. Regrettably, their responses left me more confused and frustrated, as they seemed unfamiliar with the topic and were unhelpful.
Compounding the situation, I missed the initial deadline for grade submission. To make matters more urgent, I was informed that if I did not return the funds promptly (as specified by my employer), they would begin deducting the amount from my paycheck.
To clarify, I require reimbursement for three terms: Nov 2023 - Dec 2023, Dec 2023 - Jan 2024, and Jan 2024 - Feb 2024. Initially, I prepaid with the intention of returning to class as before. Despite my efforts, the financial aid office has yet to process the refund, leaving me in a difficult position.
Here is a summary of the events:
Initial Withdrawal (November 2023): Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to drop classes in November 2023. At that time, I was assured that all necessary arrangements would be handled, and there was no immediate action required on my part.
Return of Funds (Early March 2024): After several emails and back-and-forth exchanges, I was informed that funds for the first and third terms had been returned to my employer. However, the communication regarding this process was unclear and inconsistent.
Ongoing Deductions: Unfortunately, my employer began deducting significant amounts from my paycheck — $600-700 biweekly since early 2024 and $368.00tax biweekly since November 2023. This financial burden has been distressing, especially considering that a portion of the funds were not returned until the end of March.
Importance of Second Term Refund: As we approach the end of the academic year, I urgently need the refund for the second term (Dec 2023 - Jan 2024). Failure to address this promptly will result in further deductions, exacerbating my financial strain.
Lack of Responsiveness: Despite my professional and respectful emails, I have received little to no response. This lack of communication reflects poorly on the institution and leaves me feeling unheard and unsupported.
Accountability: While I understand the complexities involved, I believe it is essential to prioritize student needs. The current situation suggests that my concerns are only addressed when financial transactions are involved, which is disheartening.
Financial Strain: Due to the delay in processing my refund, I have been forced to tap into my retirement savings to cover essential bills. This unexpected burden has significantly impacted my financial stability.
Lack of Recourse: Regrettably, there seems to be no viable avenue within the school to expedite the refund process. My repeated emails and calls have yielded minimal results.
Communication Challenges: The staff member I have been corresponding with — whom I shall refer to as “the lady” — has consistently ignored my calls and provided inadequate responses via email. This lack of responsiveness sends a clear message that my concerns are not a priority.
Timeliness Matters: In a professional institution, timely communication is essential. Waiting days or weeks for a response is unacceptable, especially considering the urgency of my situation.
Comparative Size: While I understand that our school is smaller than many others, this should not excuse disrespectful communication or inefficient processes.
Request for Action: I implore you to investigate the policies surrounding time off from school and its financial implications. Additionally, please address the lack of communication promptly. As a student, I deserve better treatment.
Impact on My Decision: This ongoing ordeal has left me questioning whether I want to continue my education at this institution.
Claimed loss: Thousands of dollars and many days of emails not responded
Desired outcome: I want my Funds returned to my employer so that I can get my finances back in order. they have caused me financial hardship. I would like an Apology, for the disrespect as adults and professionals.
