Hello, I am Aja Brooks mother, Lawanna Works (the one who initiated the call today). Last night my daughter came home to water running in her bathroom. She discovers water leaking from the ceiling. Shortly after the ceiling caved in. We attempted to call the emergency maintenance line that we had for Professional Equity, which were the previous owners of this property. There was a recording advising they no longer handle this complex. Water started spilling in quickly, so I called 911 and the fire department came in. We initially thought someone’s bathtub was overflowing. So Aja went upstairs to apartment D on the second floor and knocked repeatedly at the door with no answer. When the fire department and the police came, we asked that they do a welfare check on the apartment D as we thought someone lived there. The fire department told Aja, the apartment was vacant and they cannot damage the property by trying to enter without permission. WE asked them to turn off the water, they refused and said we need to find out how to contact the maintenance department. Then they left with water pouring everywhere. I called again about 30 mins later when the issue was worsening. They came out again and told Aja the same thing and left still not even turning off the water. I called American Water to see if they can have someone come out to help, they said the could not. I called the non emergency St Louis County police to see if they have any record of a phone number for the property manager. I was told NO. I spoke to the same officer that had come to the property when the fire department was there. I asked if he could come back and do a welfare check upstairs that maybe someone is inside and needs help. He told me he will not play a guessing game with me and they will not be coming back. Now the water is off, debris and water is everywhere. My daughter cannot use the restroom and has had to go the restroom in a bucket since last night. This is inhumane conditions and I am shocked that this is how citizens that pay taxes and their rent are treated. I do not know where to go from here, as this is just a temporary fix. These people at Lucas and Hunt village need to be held accountable for her lost wages for today, her damage in her apartment and move her to another unit until we can get her out of there completely. Please let me know what else can be done to help her. I appreciate you coming out as you promised as you were the only person that actually helped. Further assistance is still greatly needed. Please provide further assistance and resources so that she can get the help she needs.
Sincerely, Lawanna Works [protected]
And Aja Brooks [protected]
Claimed loss: food, clothes, toiletries, bathrooms and kitchen supplies
Desired outcome: I want them to be held financially responsible and also move me out of this unit that is no longer liveable
