We purchased a brand new home in July 2023. Puget sound energy installed a faulty electricity meter that did not accurately read electricity usage (and knew it was faulty). PSE did not communicate this issue with us at all, we never received an email or letter or any phone call explaining this issue. We were billed from July 2023 through to January 2024 based on estimated usage (average of 364kWh at $8.55 per kWh). PSE then replaced this faulty meter in January 2024, we were then billed $607 in February (10X our average usage, nearly an entire years worth of bills).
PSE's estimates were incorrect by 854% (or 3443 kWh)...Apparently this bill was to "true-up" our estimates to actual usage, but how can they calculate our actual usage when the meter they were using was broken in the first place, hence the need to replace the meter. PSE is unable to provide any other support to use besides the massive 10 X Bill. They cannot provide our actual usages at each month to support the 3443 supposed actual hours incurred.
- PSE installed a broken meter, which they knew was faulty at the time of installation.
- PSE did not communicate with us at any stage regarding the installation of faulty / dangerous hardware.
- PSE billed us based on their own faulty estimates (apparently these were incorrect by 854%)
- PSE did not communicate with us at any stage regarding their materially incorrect billing estimation practices
- PSE will terminate our services if we do not absorb the "price" of their own mistakes.
Claimed loss: Remove the historical charges ($607) based on the faulty reader.
Desired outcome: PSE should absorb any historical costs they incurred based on the installation of faulty/dangerous hardware. Remove this from the bill and we move forward prospectively with accurate readings.
