HIghbeam Research Fraud

I'm another victim of their fraud. I happened to notice a deduction of £88.31 for HB *QUESTIA [protected]. I queried with Amex, they told me it was for Highbeam Research. I explained I knew nothing about the outfit, so they immediately refunded my payment in full. They did tell me they were having no success in chasing up the company, but they are still not charging the transaction. I'm very relieved, because I would hate to have gone through all the frustration that other people seem to have had with them. and I wouldn't have given up easily.

HIghbeam Research Scam

Hi. I was also scammed by HIghbeam and am considering filing a class action lawsuit against them and would love to speak with you. Thank you. Angela Edwards [protected]. Here's my story:

Ultimate bait-and-switch rip-off and unauthorized charge for unrequested, unauthorized, unused and in-advance cancelled "yearly" membership! I was shocked at the blatant consumer protection violations by highbeam in charging in advance for a "yearly" membership despite the fact that I 1)did not request it, 2) did not utilize the services beyond the free-trial because I found the site worthless, 3)was charged a "monthy" $17.04 membership fee on 8/28/10 and THE SAME DAY charged a whopping $318.70 for what, upon inquiry, I was later informed was a "yearly membership" on top of a monthly membership, neither of which I wanted or authorized. Even the "free trial" was essentially worthless in what it offered so I had absolutely no interest in or use for a paid membership. I immediately called the company when I opened my MC bill and saw these outrageous and unauthorized charges. I spoke with a representative who identified herself as "Glenda" and was uncooperative and spewed out the standard company script about the "contract" and "terms." I informed her that these charges were 100% unauthorized and represented payment for their "service" for a whole year IN ADVANCE! I immediately cancelled the membership and demanded a full refund. After informing her that Highbeam was operating in direct violation of State and Federal consumer protection statutes and threatening to report them to the Attorney General's Office, she spoke with her supervisor "Karmen" and yes, they would issue a full refund immediately and cancel the billing for the "future" subscription. Imagine my surprise when I was notified by e-mail that, yes, they would and had cancelled my subscription (hold on for this...) However ... the "subscription" was to expire in September 2011! NO REFUND! I followed-up again (by e-mail) to again reiterate my cancellation and get the refund I requested and was promised, since I had no intention of using and had cancelled their "service" yet they refused to refund any money. The same alleged supervisor "Karmen" said "no refund" despite what I was initially told on the phone by Glenda who said Highbeam would refund the charges after discussing the matter with Karmen her "supervisor." I am looking into filing a class action case and seek certification on a nationwide-basis since it appears that they are scamming victims all over the country, over and over again with no accountability and there are certainly grounds for such a case. They are getting away with ripping people off because they know no individual can afford to bring an individual case since it would cost more than their claim. Sadly, they are stealing people's money because they can do it. I am grateful for this website to inform and hopefully protect and educate other unsuspecting consumers and to give us a voice. Fortunately, as a class action, there is strength and power in numbers and is the only mechanism to make Highbeam and other predatory internet companies financially accountable!

I have used Highbeam, an online research service sporadically over the years. Once you sign up for this service, you will keep paying and paying until you tell them to stop.

I just got notice that I was signing up for another year -- for $100 more than 2009. I was even billed for a credit card that didn't even come close to matching my number. But AmEx honored it.

Back to HB -- when I cancelled online, I was given an offer to save $100 if I stayed as a customer. I declined just wanting to leave the service and save the money.

But I found that my card was recently charged and the company doesn't give refunds. So I still have service through next spring.

This is October 2015 and as soon as I realised how much the service costs I tried to go back on my browser to delete the registration information. I didn't complete my bank details but the previous pages did have my email address. Anyway, I closed it and thought no more about it and now am being emailed with free trial offers. I couldn't think who Highbeam Research was so I 'googled' it and now remember the registration attempt that I didn't complete. I'm glad I didn't go for the free trial, which I may have done as I normally do try out free stuff (usually software such as virus scanning, wordprocessing, photo editing etc.) but I've never had money taken out of my account after the free trial was over. I hope a class action is pursued against them - they obviously are still doing business.

I forgot to add that after the charge you an annual fee, their way of compromising is (a) Continue membership at reduced rate of USD199.95 - refunding
> USD100.00
>
> (b) Extend your membership to May 2013 at no additional cost beyond
> USD299.95 already paid.
If you still want to cancel, they will cancel but the one year subscription that you paid for can also no longer be used.

I had almost exactly the same experience! Their company is unreputable and unhonourable, that is why they have to succumb to such sales tactics, especially for such an amount. All reputatable online subscription has always asked us through telephone if we want to renew annually. I think many people not just is USA, but globally have fallen into their prey! I, foe one, am based in Singapore.

HIghbeam Research Scam Bait and Switch Unauthorized Billing

I had the same thing happen to me! I was charged $199.94... I canceled my "free subscription" the same day I signed up for the "free trial", however the company "claims" to have no record of my cancelation. No refunds! NEVER used the service! I went to the Better Business Bureau and they have an A+ rating... PLEASE file a complaint with them so they are forced to either settle with us or the BBB has to lower their rating! A+ is the highest rating a business can receive. They DO NOT deserve it!

HIGH BEAM ...I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS COMPANY, NEVER DONE BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY, YET WAS CHARGED $29.95 ON MY CREDIT CARD. How they got my credit card information, I don't know. Thankfully, Wachovia put an immediate stop to my account and refunded my money ASAP. The headache is having my card inactive and having to wait for a new card to be mailed to me. SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS COMPANY and find out how they are illegally and unlawfully using people credit card information.

Angela: Add us to your suit! We are with you 100%! Currently in the process of fighting to get fees refunded. My husband disputed the charges, like you, and the issuing bank granted a temporary refund. Now, Highbeam has refuted that and my husband has to come up with proof that the account was cancelled ... twice. Ridiculous!
