This is the dumbest complaint I have read in a while. The website is about as clear as day about its refund policy...what is confusing about "cannot refund used bids"...you definately used them. The website should not be held liable because of your blatent ignorance to overlook the refund policy. You wouldn't have "lost" your money if you would have planned to book a hotel or trip. You could of used those credits, but instead you were like the 1000s of people who think they are going to strike it rich for little to no investment. I agree that this site is dumb if your aren't planning a vacay in the immediate future. And to the conservatives who call this a gambling site...wow...it's an auction...what a twisted point of view you have.

I second Mr. Castro's complaint and agree with him 100%. Please avoid this SCAM by all means. You might as well have free drinks at a casino in LV, rather than losing thousands of your Dollars on this site. AVOID by all means.

I'm one of the founders of Off & Away and wanted to set the record straight on Mr. Castro's accusations.

Our refund policy does state that bids which have been used in our auctions cannot be refunded. The rationale behind this policy is that because those bids have affected the outcome of the auction for other the bidders (by increasing the auction price and extending the auction time) we cannot refund them. However, so that customers (like Mr. Castro) who do not win the auction don't feel as if they are walking away empty-handed, bidders earn credit equal to the value of bids they used in an auction. This credit can be used towards a booking at over 100k hotels.

With regards to Mr. Castro's accusations that "THEY NEVER EXPLAINED OR ASKED ME TO READ REFUND POLICY", I've attached screen shots of our site detailing all of the locations which outline the policy.

We're really want our customers to understand how the auctions work before they bid, so I hope this information clears the air.

OffAndAway.com I can't believe I fell for this scam site

I can't believe I fell for this scam site. I feel like such an idiot. First, you have to pay $1 per bid (and obviously, in a single auction, you'll likely have to make many bids). Second of all, the clock that sets the time left in the auction goes down to three seconds... then magically resets itself to 30 seconds. So the deadline is no deadline, and the auction is just a scam. Don't fall for it.

I joined this site and have been carefully watching. Yes, this seems like a good deal...at first. Then, when you acually sit down and watch one single auction, you notice the scam. Here's how it goes.

You bid (only a penny at a time (which cost you a dollar at a time)
You watch other bidders (and get in the moment of bidding)
When the auction is close to "end", since there are ALWAYS multiple bidders, it goes into the "hot zone" (which is the last 2 minutes of the auction). This hot zone can last for hours (I have seen the same auction "hot zone" last for over 24 hours! Just think about it. For instance, if an auction goes for $124.57, then offandaway has made $12, 457 on "penny bids" just from the bidding process. They make BIG revenue just on this! Also, they send you emails, "reminding" you that the auction is "going into the hot zone" at a certain time (which is usually HOURS after it has technically already been in the hot zone. Also, the "book now" prices aren't that great of deals. They are standard "good deal" prices that you can get through other ways and sites. I have saved emails, print screens, and auction information. I am not a gambler, and typically don't fall for these scams, but since the original investors seemed credible, I tried it out. Apparently, I ended up falling for a scam.

I don't believe this site is a scam. I used it for the first time months ago but I didn't win the auction but I was able to use my credits (which added up to $75.00) towards another hotel stay. I took my family to an overnight stay in Mount Laurel, NJ to the Hyatt Summerfield Suites. The $75.00 was like a deposit and when I made the reservation I paid the balance. It pays to read the fine print!

When an auction hits 2 minutes before close, it enters the HotZone. Any bids during that time add 15 seconds to the bid clock so yes, if there are a ton of bidders, that HotZone can be pushed pretty far out. I don't think it's a scam, their instructions and rules of engagement are crystal clear. As a consumer you have to read all of the fine print. Just like "this is not your father's Oldsmobile" Off+Away's auctions are not your mother's eBay.

Wow, did you even read the page on how the site works before you signed up for it? This is pure ignorance on your part. The timer will add up to 30 seconds to the clock when someone bids and the timer hits the two minute mark for the first time. This is to give other bidders a chance to counteroffer.
