Rented a home from company on the outer banks of North Carolina. Everything was wonderful until we drove 8 hours home to find an answering machine message from Surf or Sound stating they would be charging $300 to our credit card for damages to home (cabinet doors and broken window blinds) as well as garbage down the hallway.
We are 7 adults ranging in age from 40 - 76 (all family members) one of which was in a wheel chair. We broke nothing and garbage was in appropriate containers. Looking this company up on the internet we find this is their modus operandi, a way to get more $ from unsuspecting renters.
Something must be done about their fraudulent practices. Our vaction as been forever marred by Surf or Sound Realty. We plan on fighting charges with every tool we have, in cluding state attorney general's office, tourism boards, etc.
This is an UPDATE...within a couple days, the people at Surf or Sound resolved this situation to our satisfaction. Their staff ended up being very friendly and fair about the whole situation and all is well. I'd even say that we would rent from them again, but this time (and I'd warn any house renter anywhere to do the same) we will take pics of everything on the way in, and the same pics on the way out just to cover ourselves.
Again, Surf or Sound Realty came through in the end with minimal hassle. They were very friendly and easy to deal with.
We just returned from a vacation using Surf or Sound Realty. Returned home with the same message on our answering machine. Must be a standard thing they do to try and scam more money from renters. Will definitely fight the charges. They tried to blame us for a broken pool stick and a burn mark on the deck. (We don't smoke). Also said there were scratches on the bed. Will never use them again, even if we resolve the problems with them. Shame on them for trying to scam money from people.
