I sent a complaint yesterday, 7/26/2024. I am not sure whether you received it, so I am repeating it. It's almost impossible to recount how badly my airline reservations were handled. Summarizing, a roundtrip flight for my wife and I between Tampa, Florida and Houston, Texas costs about $500 plus the cost of selected options. All bookings were through Expedia. My credit card has been charged $1761.68, and charges come from three companies, Expedia, United Airlines and Spirit Airlines Here are two parts to this disaster.

On 7/14/2024, I booked a roundtrip flight and received a confirmation from both United and Expedia. The trip was to leave Tampa on 11/1/2024 and return on 11/3/2024. Upon receiving the notifications, I immediately cancelled the trip because I made error on the return date indicating a return date of 11/1 instead of 11/3. I waited until 7/15/2024 to rebook, this time with the correct return date of 11/3. On this booking, I decided to return earlier which necessitated that I book with Spirit Airlines. So, the result was a flight to Houston on United and a return to Tampa on Spirit. As a result, I was booked for the same United flight three times, all for the same date and time. I waited for the problem to be resolved, but it did not happen until I called United on 7/26, and they cancelled two of the three, saying refunds would be forthcoming in two or three weeks.

Next came a problem with Spirit on 7/15, which acknowledged my reservation and then immediately cancelled it but charged me $326.18. When the charge did not clear from my credit card, I started a chat session on 7/26 with Spirit wherein I confirmed that the reservation had been cancelled and explained that I had not been credited for the charge. The agent said I had to check with Expedia because they did not have the funds. That's not true because my credit card statement clearly shows the charge is from Spirit and subsequently Spirit has refunded my cancelled flight.

As of today, my credit card has been charged as of today $1433.50 ($1761.68 less $328.18 received yesterday from Spirit for a cancelled flight), insurance and options such as seat and baggage selections. United has given me a one-year credit that can be used until 7/14/2025, but as of today I don't know the amount. However, I have no use for a credit because of my age and physical condition, I rarely fly. I am only going on this trip to accompany my wife who is attending an association meeting in Houston. What I am seeking is a refund of the original United booking charge of $493.92.

Claimed loss: From United Airlines $493.92 credit to my credit card instead of flight credits. From United Airlines $246.96 for erroneous bookings. From Expedia $93.00 for insurance on cancelled flights.

Desired outcome: $833.88 refunds to my credit card from the two companies.

Booking and then canceling a trip due to an error only to be charged multiple times is unacceptable. The confusion with Spirit Airlines adding to the stress is even more disheartening, especially when the charges and refunds are not processed correctly.

It's clear that the situation has been a nightmare, and you deserve a resolution. Given your circumstances and the fact that you rarely fly, a refund rather than a travel credit is completely reasonable.

I hope United Airlines and Expedia address this promptly and provide the refund for the original booking charge of $493.92. Your persistence in seeking a fair resolution is commendable, and I hope this matter is resolved soon.
