Dollar General - Cashier at Belair Rd. Dollar General

Today around 12 noon I went to The Dollar General on Belair Road in Augusta, GA. The cashier was a young, pregnant, dark hair and dark eyed woman, hopefully this will help identify her for education and training, because she desperately needs it.

I attempted to purchase 3 cases of Mt. Dew. I informed the cashier that I also would like to have the military discount added as it was posted at other stores in the area and I have a military ID. She stated, "I don't know nothin about that."

Next,

I had clipped the 2.00 coupon for Mtn. Dew if you buy three. Just as in your ad for the week shows. Plain as day IN YOUR AD. I showed her on my phone.

Buy 3 for 15, - 2.00 equals 13.00

The cashier rang me up and it was 15.80. She then proceeded to tell me that I could not use a coupon because it was already on sale. I said, "its in your ad." I said where are your ad fliers (as mine was on my phone) she pointed behind her, which she appeared to point behind the register, so I just stood there waiting for her to get it. She was clearly annoyed with having to walk to the other side of the register area to grab it talking under her breath the way over to it. She brings it over and then says "well, this one is old."

So, she calls on the phone, who she says is the District manager. If this is true, the district manager clearly needs training as well. The "manager" and her together cannot figure this simple transaction out. She really had no interest in figuring it out. My husband left the store as he was fed up with her unwillingness to help and apathy. She claimed that him being upset was messing with her energy, or something to that effect.

She tried multiple times to ring it up and the last time the total was 18.00 and change. At that point, as the total was going up, I said forget it, and left the store.

The bottom line is, she was terrible and a horrible representation of your company.

We went to a different Dollar General on Baston Road in Martinez, GA and at approx. 1:20 the same day, (today) after giving up and leaving empty handed from the first store.

The gentleman working that register was wonderful. He was in his late 20s maybe early 30s, dark hair, dark eyes, he may have had dread locks if I am remembering correctly. He needs commending.

I told him upfront I would like the military discount for veterans day. He said, "I don't know how to do that, but I will find out!" and he did and it was so quick. He rang up the sodas and a few other items with out a problem and was friendly and pleasant and competent.

Night and day difference.

I do have to say, that when I go to any dollar general there is more often than not a register issue and things do not get rung up correctly. I feel that this is more a software issue than personnel. So I generally walk in there knowing that I need to be extra patient. But today is was clearly both. Especially since the first woman had no real interest in helping. She just seemed to want to get back to her lunch that she was eating behind the counter.

Please get better register software and Please train people better, starting with hiring competent people like the gentleman in the Martinez, GA store.

Desired outcome: I would like this terrible employee to have training on the equipment as well as customer service training.

Here is something you likely don't know about Dollar General and how the computers and their ads work. More often than not, employees are not given the information on said events(the manager has to look in the computer and print out a barcode for that one day event and hang it where it can be scanned by the cashier) and Dollar General ads do not line up with how items in the store ring up in the system. It requires reading of fine print on coupons. The girl was visibly pregnant, she had been on her feet walking back and forth all day in that store, so yes, a demanding customer having her walk more was probably not pleasant. How is she supposed to give the discount when she had nothing physically required to scan it? It is not like it is an option on the register, and cashiers can't override prices or get in the system to even know where to look. The guy who was helpful was probably an experienced lead or ASM or maybe even the manager.
