I had to have my car jump-started because the battery was dead. I took it to Pep Boys for their free battery charge. I was informed that my battery was completely dead (even though it was only 2 years old) and I had to buy a new one. I agreed to it. After putting in the new battery, I was informed that my battery was being drained as it sat there and there was something else wrong. They told me it would cost another $45 for a diagnostic test to see if it was the alternator, or cables or whatever. I declined. I drove it home and called AAA for their battery diagnosis. The AAA mechanic checked the battery and said it was not draining at all! But, he said they put in 2012 battery instead of a new one! I was furious. I drove back to Pep Boys and told them to take out the 2012 and put in the new battery I had paid for. The manager did not seem fazed at all, as if this happens all the time. I asked her why she would put an old battery in my car instead of the new one I paid for, and she said that "we just put in what was up front, the new ones are in the back" OR it was probably the manufactuer's fault because they put the wrong sticker on it. Right! At any rate, I wiil not be going back to Pep Boys any time soon.

FYI:
A battery is considered "NEW" if it has never been installed. the date of manufacture stamp on battery is just that. Date of manufacture. automotive batteries can easily sit on a battery rack for a year with no detrimental affects. the Battery warranty starts the day the battery is installed. If you had a battery that went bad in only 2 years there was likely whats called a paracitic drain. It is a drain that leaches small amounts of power from the battery over time and shortens the life of the battery. it may not be a constant drain. Hand held battery testers are not equipped to find such intermittant problems.
