Hello, I work for a company called Living Resources Orange DCOP, where we work with adults who have developmental disabilities. We like to take them out in the community to volunteer, eat out for lunch and accomplish goals they have for themselves to lead toward independence. Today, August 2, 2023, around 10:47 AM, a group of four individuals and their DSP (Direct Support Professional) from Living Resources entered the Burger King located in Middletown, NY on 107 Dolson Ave. And upon entering the store our individuals walked in and before gathering to order food they first decided to go use the restroom. While two individuals were using the restroom (one female and one male) the staff/DSP stood with other two individuals and waited for their turn. Which is when one of the employees came over to use the restroom and when she saw our guys standing there waiting, she loudly stated "We not doing this. This can't be, Ya need to leave." Then she went back to the kitchen area where she proceeded to express her annoyance in a very loud tone to her manager and other employees while other customers and our group of individuals were present and listening. Our Staff/DSP did interrupt her loud complaining to express that her actions were very disrespectful and discriminatory. She did not care and neither did the store manager at the time. The manager expressed that people have to be paying customers in order to use the restrooms, but they gave no chance for explanation or time for individuals to make their orders after using the restrooms. This behavior was very unprofessional and uncalled for. Our individuals that are more high functioning followed and understood everything that was happening and felt disrespected over something so simple. They were negatively affected emotionally by this experience. And with all the neglect this population with people who have developmental disabilities already receive I cannot let this treatment slide under the rug without it being acknowledged. Desired outcome: I would like an honest apology from both manager and employee for their rudeness and disrespect toward my clients all over simple bathroom use.
