continuing billing after canceling
I canceled this company services on january 2, 2010, both by internet and writing a physical letter to their physical address. I have been through a lot of harassment from them ever since, including their billing my credit card, their numerous emails by their always different representatives directing to do this and that to process the cancellation - going...
Read full review of 1&1 Ionos and 1 commentdeceptive practices
1&1 has a terrible negative billing / deceptive practices structure that makes it impossible to transfer out your domain. They obscure information on how to transfer away, they make the cacel.1and1.com site deceptive and confusing to intentionally obscure the process, and then lay out traps to cancel your policy in a way that they can then charge you $40 to reinstate the domain.
In my case, I paid for a domain (with 2 months remaining) and attempted to transfer away, but the domain remained 'locked'. I also requested to cancel the account. The domain transfer failed and they would not undo the cancellation (even though it says you can for up to 3 days). Now, they want to charge $40 to reinstate a domain I already paid for, and then charge me again for the domain registration.
Forget about customer service — they’re useless. Stay away at all costs — once you’re in their grip they’ll never let you go without fees and underhanded techniques to trap you.

refused to cancel/delete my account then sent me to collections.
I recently used 1and1.com to purchase around 60 domains. After 10 months I realized that 1and1.com is a scam and essentially tries to suck secretly charge customers these renewal fees. I took the appropriate steps to try and cancel. First I tried canceling online but received (and still receive) a server error. Next I called numerous time... no luck. Then I began emailing them so that it would be in writing and they still refused to delete my account from their system. After 2 months of bothering them to delete me, I finally was forced to get a new debit card to ensure they could not charge me.
Fast forward to 10 months later. I just received almost 60 letters in the mail from the collections agency stating that I owe 1and1 all of these renewal fees... a letter for each domain.
I am now disputing this, but this whole ordeal and the hassle involved with keeping track of 60 disputes is sickening, meanwhile I'm deeply worried that my credit score will be destroyed.
1and1.com needs to be investigated and shutdown for their business practices. They take advantage of their customers and bully them around with collections agencies if you don't comply.

Truly the most unethical behavior I have dealt with from a single company, ever. They do everything they can to steal from people and even sell personal information to third parties without authorization. They can somehow reestablish payment agreements with PayPal after they're canceled and refuse to allow you access to your account information, such as past invoices. I'm nauseated over how long this has been going on and yet they still are allowed to do business. It's unacceptable.
I am sorry to read this,
I could not agree more though. 1and1 have now crossed me as well. I will not rest until they are finished for destroying so many people. I have been caught on their free trial package. I did not even know how i was entered for it. I have an existing domain with them and believe I may have accepted a free trial from a telephone conversation with a sales rep based in the USA who started the conversation asking me how everything was! I thought it was a customer care call! What a fool I feel I have been. White collared theft is what I call it. As bad as burglars. Since when can money be taken without a signed contract and a cooling of period.

I have been harassed by 1and1.com for 8 months - they keep charging my credit card after I canceled all their accounts 8 months ago. I canceled them by Internet and by writing them physical letters. I can't believe customers are helpless to shut down this dishonest business after so many complaints on them. They impudently keep on ripping people off and nobody can't do anything about it?
I am going to write to all organizations now until I get some answers that these criminals are stopped.
It is a crime to impose your service on a customer keep charging their credit card and keep harassing them with the bills after cancellation.

collection agency nco financial
I have four domains listed with 1&1. Normally when the term expires your domain reverts back to the hosting company or becomes available. NOT SO with 1&1!
Next thing I know I get a letter from a collections agency for $17, 98 plus $8 "convenience fee"!
I can expect a similar letter for each domain I have with 1&1.
I called them and complained, to no avail. I requested authorization codes to transfer the domains which they sent immediately. However, they also blocked my abillity to unblock my domains. I only found that out when I received a message from GODADDY that they were unable to complete the transfer. According to technical support only "billing" would be able to unblock these domains. This would appear to be an incredibly unethical manner of doing business! I'd be embarrased to be working for such a company.
Needless to say that in my opinion and experience they are a very bad company to deal with.
SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE!

This company must stop credit score organizations to complain against people.
I had the same terrible experience with registrar. Their account manage is atrociously difficult to navigate.
To cancel you have to go a seperate website. Then again you are not sure which domains you cancelled because they disclose only the "package number" in the cancellation notice. I thought I had cancelled the domains...but out of the blue I start receiving collection notices.
Next my account is frozen and I could not access the rest of my domains. Customer service is as good as non-existent. Stay away from this registrar!
cancellation maze - collections agency
So I bought two websites, one for me and one for my wife. After a year’s time I found I had no time to even create them let alone maintain them so I wanted to cancel. In good faith I went to the website and searched for the cancellation area, well hidden of course! As a matter of fact they have an entire website dedicated just to cancellations, which tips you off as to how complex this becomes... I submitted the cancellation, saw a cancellation email come into my inbox and moved on. Then I started getting these emails about unable to bill my card, so I think great because I don't want you to I cancelled! Next thing I know I get a letter from a collections agency! Yes, for a measly $29 they submit me to a collections agency for a package I thought I had cancelled! So of course I call them and explain my utter desertification with this and they just tell me "sorry, we sent you an email...". So come to find out there is this elaborate process of cancelling different portions of your package and if you don't get it right... well they will charge you, charge you late fees and submit you to a collections agency until you get it right! So ended up paying even more money now to the collections agency, which I had to do of course, then I have to go back to 1&1 to "properly" cancel my package, then being the generous and gracious company that they are, they will refund the un-used portion of my package. All that to say, SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE! There are plenty of good companies out there who don't want to screw you over $29! Happy trails!

Many of us have had issues with 1&1 Internet. It’s time we got together to do something about it. They usually get away with the small charges because most people pay to make it go away (and 1&1 is extremely persisent over a couple dollars).
I’ve started a facebook group to start gathering people together to share stories and tactics to resolve any alleged wrongdoings:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=104649439567617
I had four domains registered with 1and1.com for four years. My credit card expired and my email address changed. I had no further interest in the domain names. My street address was known to 1and1 but they charged my account with the cost of renewal and sold the account to NCO Financial, a collection agency instead of writing me. That collection agency has been fined many times for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. They operate under many different aliases in different states. They have been fined by state agencies many times. If you ask them a “difficult” question they will hang up on you. Ref.: http://www.callferret.com/nco-financial-systems.html
1and1 is essentially a German company (United Internet AG, predecessor: 1&1 EDV-Marketing GmbH, in Montabaur, Germany (1988)) that is trying to implement their German ways (befehl ist befehl) of doing business here in America.
If you have a subscription they will insist on your pro-active instructions to terminate that subscription as opposed to the local custom to let it expire if you are not paying for an extension. Once they sell the account to NCO they lock your domains so that it is not possible to transfer them without you having paid NCO. If you do not pay NCO they will continue to charge your account for renewals until you pay. Meanwhile NCO keeps adding interest and collection charges plus “convenience fees”, “costs” and “other charges.”
Because the amounts involved are small ($8, 99 per domain) it does not pay to hire an attorney but they rake in many dollars that way. Then once they unlock your domain and you transfer it they still invoice you for another year. Your credit rating may be destroyed and you may have to pay twice for the same domain name.
The only way to take action against them is to file a class action suit. Their actions are unconscionable and unethical to state it mildly.
With the BBB they rate an F, the lowest rating!
Do research before you end up in the clutches of 1&1!
unfair charge
I received a letter from NCO financial services stating that a debt of $41.94 and $18.95 is due to 1&1 Internet services. First of all I have not used this service in more than 1 year. I was sent a form in the mail for a renewal of the account that said to renew the account all I needed to do was to return the information. I did not return the information so I assumed that the account had expired and was closed. I NEVER received a call from this company about a renewal of my account and that a debt was due and was going to be sent to a collection agency. The amount due is a renewal fee and I did not renew this account and did not use the account so the amount due is a unfair charge owed and I would greatly appreciate it if you drop the charges owed. Any further action taken on my behalf will go to the Better Business bureau. Account# k10122925

world's worst webhosting company
There are so many choices for webhosting and web domains. Do NOT make the mistake that I did and utilize 1 and 1.
Run away, and run fast. This company sent my name/account to collections without my knowledge. I did not ask, nor did I want my account to renew. Their service was so poor. I did not update the credit card they had on file for my account because I expected that my domain would expire on the expiration date (through which I was paid in full). No, they charged me anyway, for a service that I did not want. They then assessed late fees. Then, althought they say they 'made a call to the phone number on file' they went ahead and sent my account to collections! I then had to deal with one of the worst collection agencies ever, pay for a service (plus late fees) that I did not authorize, nor want AND I also had to pay the collection agency a 'service fee.' I contacted 1 and 1 to explain that I was unaware that my account was being charged, although I did not renew and they blamed me for not getting their calls.
I encourage you to avoid this company at all costs.

If you're thinking about doing business with 1 and 1 internet, then you may want to reconsider after your done reading this article.
1 And 1 Internet provides a range of services from web and dedicated servers. They are considered one of the worse companies in the U.S when it comes to providing technical support and customer services.
If you're thinking about getting a dedicated server with them, then do not expect to receive very technical support. If you try asking a simple question about Plesk that is installed on their servers, you will get a response we do not support it.
Comparing the price on the dedicated servers with the other providers listed on google.com, 1 And 1 Internet is way over price. You can compare some of the prices using this link http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=cheap+dedicaed+linux+servers&aq=f&aqi=m1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= or go to http://www.santrex.com.
1 And 1 Internet can even do a simple process of syncing there email between their billing and cancellation system that is used to cancel your account.
If you want to make a complaint against the company do no except a response from 1 And 1 Internet.
If you have a complaint about 1 And 1 Internet, then you should file your complaint by going to http://www.bbb.org. They will listen to you and they keep a total numbers of complaints that they receive against the companies.

account not cancelled
I had a domain with 1&1 which I cancelled with them. They did not cancell it and continued to charge me. Emailing the domain which I assumed had been cancelled and was no longer using, to advise me of the bills. They have now passed it on to a debt collection agency for £11. I have advised them I will not be paying this and expect to have the debt written off, also requesting it to be passed on to their Director of Customer Services / Compalints.
This is the most recent reply from them:
I know the previous response might not have been the response that you
were looking for. However, this is the response we need to give. This
is a situation where the account was left delinquent for some time and
that caused our automated system to pass this account to collections.
Despite these actions not grasping your attention, these were honest
efforts to contact you. As an internet company, email is our preferred
use of contact. Furthermore, when the account is further delinquent, we
suspend the service. We have give ample time and notice for this
account. There is nothing we can do at this point. I am sorry.

This seems to be a reoccuring issue you have with many which needs to
be resolved. The account was closed with you and not used. You then
continued to charge me, and as I was no longer using it, assuming it
had been closed, was not aware.
This is not acceptable by any means.
I have requested for this to be passed on to the Director of Customer
Services/Complaints (I assume this is the same in your company) and I
expect it to be.
I will start loggin this on the above websites, maybe then you will
take some appropriate action.

Had problem cancelling my account they would not cancel it after trying to talk with him on phone sent to [Philippines and USA whats all that about ] waste of time do not listen to you they then sent my account to collection team and giving 7 days to pay up or go to court I paid the 86.00 by cheque. Now I can take them to a small claims court to recover the amount owed plus expenses they now have 14 days to comply lets see how they like me taking them to court
Not enough space to to tell you all the problems I have had with this company. Only to say they are a complete rip off, none communicating, arrogant, faceless imbeciles who believe that they can bully illegal payments out of unsuspecting clients. My message is Think Again One & One, I LOVE TO FIGHT BULLIES.
My Story-- In a nutshell.
I cancelled my contract in advance of the end of contract; again, again, again and again to no effect, and after several premium phone calls, emails from me and none communication from One&One. I eventually discovered that because THEY had issued a demand IN ADVANCE the only way to clear my account was to pay my contract IN ADVANCE and then have it returned to me! If I was lucky, What planet do they work from?
My answer was quite simple NO CHANCE.
Since then I have had several demands from a debt collection agency and still no replies from One&One.
I have informed the debt collection agency that they are acting on false information.
They have sent out another demand.
I am now sending One&One a demand for my time and services dealing with this matter, strangely it is the same amount they are demanding from me!
I am also looking into the legalities of a debt collection agency knowingly acting on false information.
Also I am seeking advice on One&One demanding a payment for a debt that does not exist. I ask the question-----Is this legal?
Will Trading Standards or the Police be interested?

those people are big time crooks...
I've chosen for a trial (30 days free of charge) day Website Builder Plus. After 2 weeks I tried cancel it myself, it was impossible to do it on my own... so I contacted them via email. They instructed me to call them (every call is over 10 min with every simple things, call center is in Philipines and their 'English' is almost impossible to understand, and it's over 2 pounds for every single call; not mobile though!)
I called them and gentleman confirmed cancellation, said I won't be charged. I asked for a confirmation email, he promised to do so, and I never got it. Week later those [protected]@@@@@s sent me an invoice for over 17 pounds ! I am in the middle of struggle, but be aware !

I registered a web domain name at 1and1.com for 99 cents for first year, and $20 per year thereafter. A salesperson signed me up for an expensive web hosting plan without my permission. When I found an unauthorized $240 charge on my credit card, I cancelled my account and asked for a refund. They refused to refund my money, claiming that “the refund period has expired”.
This company charged my account and activated their service under my name without my authorization! The person i spoke to stated the account is under my name and my address and they are waiting for further details for the website? Wtf i never signed up for anything or any service from them. They mentioned i had to contact billing to close my account? I never opened the account... i said multiple times...eventually he hung up on me. Now i'm heading to the band after a weekend of canceling my debit card...Funny thing is i just used this card the other day for the first time...and this company shows up on my bank statement.

They call over and over again even when you have made payment arrangements. I was called two time during our Sunday Morning worship service. We had already made arrangements to pay on tue. They called again three times on Mon. Then when I called back to make a payment they said they could not talk to me because I was not the primary cardholder. Funny they had been calling my no. for a week about the same account. They when we called to make a payment they said our debit card would not go through. I called the bank the money was there and there was no reason it should have not gone through. Just another way to collect more late fees.
rip off of fees
When our account expired they continue to charge. Then they charged a late fee and a collection fee when I informed them numerous times that I did want the accounts. I had them for a client for the previous year and they no longer wanted the account. THey only let you reserve account for a year in the first place. This is rediculous. $153.80 in charges re

1 and 1 Internet cut off my e- mail in tax season. When I called, they said my credit card had expired. They would not take the new credit card information over the telephone. I needed my e-mails, they said, my only recourse was to mail in information to have my e-mail unlocked. I did not have time for all that and needed my e-mail service, cancelled the account. Then several months later I receive a collection agency letter because I have not paid them for the service I could not use. I called again, this time they told me to fax a cancellation which I did. I was never contacted about the credit card or that I owed them money. Still they say I owe the money for an e-mail service I could not use.

fraudulent business practices
I would like to bring attention to the unfair business practices of a Chesterbrook based internet company called 1and1. It is a web hosting company which advertises very heavily all over the place.
I have an account where I have reserved a domain for future use and have my credit card setup for automated payment, so I hardly visit their site to check on my account or status. There is zero communication from them except for too much advertising crap which I ignore.
Earlier in the year, there was a fraud alert on my American express card, so the card number was changed. I updated my Credit card info from wherever I received a notification about the change. I never received any updates from 1and1 about my credit card and that some invoice is due for payment, although they claim that they have send it already. Last week I received a letter from a collection agency for an amount owed to 1and1 for $29.94 along with a late fee of $18.95.
Remember this is an invoice for the period of 05/08/2009-11/08/2009 and it is advanced payment and they already sold of the debt to a collection agency (NCO Financials) by jacking up an additional late fee on it.
I tried to settle with 1and1 but they would not deal with me anymore and redirected me to NCO.

I went on the web and found many instances of such cases where 1and1 did not notify their customer and the customer comes to know about the loan from letter from the collection agency. NCO financials based in Horsham, has a bad reputation of trying to collect debts which don’t even exist.
1and1 does not care about retaining customers and focus on getting new customers by heavily spending on advertising. It is a setup business between 1and1 and NCO Financials. I suspect there is a connection between these two companies for ripping off their customers.
I have an excellent credit rating and this whole mess up between 1and1 and NCO, and this has created a risk of affecting my credit rating for a mere $29.94 which I could have paid in 30 seconds, had I received the call about wrong credit card number.
I called up NCO today and made the payment out of fear, as they did promise me that it will not be reported to credit bureaus as it is within 30 days of receiving the debt.

Well... is there going to be a class action lawsuit or what?
Is there no law firm that has the balls to stand up to 1and1, because all I read about online is how badly an absolutely enormous amount of people want to sue 1and1... but as of yet nothing has ever happened.
Everyone says... "Yeah lets get these [censor]s"... and then the comments stop and/or the thread ends... and then there's silence...and then life goes on like 1and1 hasn't fraudulently screwed over thousands and thousands of people.
Did everyone forget? Is 1and1 just too big of a Goliath for a Law firm to take on? If so lets all start pooling our money together and pay someone to start taking out the top directors and lawyers of 1and1, and then see how long they'll continue in business.
If it's legal to put into a contract that if a plaintiff sues them, that even if the plaintiff winns they have to pay all legal fees, then I need to update my contracts...and then I'm going to find someone to sign their life over to me and make them my slave... because it's in the contract... and apparently common sense no longer exists.
All officers and directors of 1and1 should be stripped naked and stoned to death.
Oh... if I didn't mention it... I'm not a fan of 1and1
They ripped me off to, renewed my domains on their billing date not the ICANN date and I tried to cancel the day they sent the bill but they just gave me the finger.
I have the same problem. They are asking me for $40 even though I tried to cancel the account, was not being able to do it by phone and was not able to do it online with a respresntative on the phone.
Their system is so bad... I am an IT Manager.
Hi,
I will go along with you to contact Abbey Spanier law firm. How could I contact them?
Richard

I'd like to file a class action lawsuit against this company. Anyone with me?
1and1 is ruining people's credit if people let their subscription expire. That's crazy! I have plenty of hosting accounts on the internet, so I am very familiar with hosting policies. When a subscription expires, and your card is expired, your prepay doesn't go through. That then cancels the account. But I guess 1and1 finds that it's profitable to threaten people with a collection agency if they don't prepay for the next term without clicking the 'cancel' button, which is not even available on your control panel!
Anyone else think this is an unfair business practice? I think we should contact the Abbey Spanier law firm and file a class action lawsuit!
false charges
Falsely billed for charges on closing the account rather than renewing it. Turned over to nco financial 2 months after closing the account and believing that all fees had been cancelled when I cancelled the account. Now an 8.99 charge from 1and1 — - which I specifically asked them if there were any other charges I needed to take care of — - is being added to by a 18.95 charge for collection.
They lied to me, and now they are trying to hijack my credit score. They need to go down.
Looking into contacting the us attorneys office. This is ridiculous.

fraud marketing
This company never follows through on what they claim. They have a contract manager that is simply a charasmatic person but has no idea what she's doing. Stay away from Lynn Eddy, she is a fraud pure and simple. She will talk sweet but has no clue about the publishing industry. Robert Fletcher LOVES to hire cheap labor and she is NO exception. You get what you pay for and she is no exception!
Here is their idea on marketing.

Many of us surf the web and as we do, we might see opportunities to post the
following information about our company. If you see a place to "put us into
the list" would you please do so? (Adding a comment like, "this is the
company I work for and I am proud of what we are accomplishing" would be
nice. Of course, just posting it is fine too).

The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Well I was happy with the actual product when it arrived. The gloss cover and binding looked really good. Little did I know that even the bookstores that were hoping to carry my book would not be able to based on distribution issues and return policy issues. The price of the book was really outrageous as well. The cover art was mine and they did nothing regarding editing...but they took money for the editing aspect of the book as well as the money for cover design. There were no typos but I have since found two sentence fragments and a tense issue since the voice is in the past tense throughout. When I asked for edits they have assessed another bill. Unfortunately, they are within there rights because it is in the contract that once you ok the proof, any further edits will cost. This would sit better with me if they had done at least a bit of editing for the money I gave. Instead, they say that it was my responsibility when I approved the final galley and would like more money. One of the bookstores that I now have a relationship with is the second largest in a huge city. The are looking to carry my book but delivery takes six to eight weeks and they can not do a transaction without an agreement for returning unsold product. I feel very frustrated about this but...
This first book did open the door for other books that I have done. I got a professional editor to look at them ( a friend ) and again, she found mistakes that I had missed. People who are unaware that one can self-publish and get a book on Amazon see the book is on Amazon and their eyes open wide. Strategic Book group does nothing really and they use the money you have given for this. They claim to have their books on Barnes and Nobles but that is false in the case of my book. Ingram books also does not list my book in a search for its title. After all is said and done, you have some choices...
1) Pay the 1000 dollars plus and get a good looking product (my case anyway) that may have errors since their editing team proved that in the case of my book. Your book will receive attention based on your efforts only...unless you want to pay more money. If you are rich and don't care about money, go with Strategic Books. The world will not see your book though. Friends and contacts will be the ones who see and buy the book and then royalties will come to a standstill. Oh yeah...royalties are presented as a very positive thing with Strategic, but that is not the case. Amazon takes 50% off the bat. You forget to factor in the costs for printing that is also very high on their end. And then you split the profit. I will not give my details but I will never get my investment back because they are not an attractive source for bookstores unfortunately.
2) Self-publish with the same results but you have saved a ton of money. Your book will not get a lot of world exposure, but you are not out of pocket like situation #1. This first endeavour may be a foot in the door with some legitimate publishing company, but that is about luck and a lot of hard work.
I am stuck with my first decision to publish and pay Strategic Books, but I will not do so ever again!
Run away. This company will take your money and give you nothing back. A writer I know published with them and had a horrible experience, over one thousand dollars spent for almost nothing. The book was published but they did nothing to help sell it and the cover was horrible.
I have just started with Strategic sbp-PUBLISINGS I have not sent any money as yet. I need to know the truth..? Tell me more? If you have a complain put it down here to tell future writers. And the other side of the coin Did they do good by you? if so write that doen as well. Me ? I will look deeper before i open my purse and let the moths out. Ann Edmead
Look Strategic is not really the issue lots of people have different contracts with them if you're being asked to front costs or being asked for dough the truth is your work may not be good enough to take a risk on it. I know a first time writer who was snapped up by Strategic and is now signed to to one of the biggest names in publishing. Yes fairytales can and will happen . Every contract a publishing house do with a writer is different and it's unfair and wrong to judge a publishing company on negative responses writers may have had with them. while it may not be the ideal start for you as a writer suck it up if you're going to succeed and get over that "hurdle" you're going to have to change your attitudes. Strategic is not that different to any of the big boys in publishing in the big scheme of things everyone ends up paying for something down the line or at the outset it's the way the world operates . The mafia style operation of getting a book out would be laughable were it not for the fact that it is an ugly monstrous procedure step 1 Secure an Agent pray and hope that the God like Agent loves your work or back to the slush pile with you! Step 2 once you've secured your agent wait around for h/she to send it to the Editors at the publishing house and pray hope they're in with the Editor so your book can be submitted Step 3 now the deal may or may not proceed and your advance can be anything from $1000 to $10, 000, 000 step 4 fine tune rewrite do whatever they tell you to step 5 go to market but even if you are publisized and given more ad space than Jesus Christ don't expect it to be a New York times best seller it's all in the print if you can't write nothing will help ... Strategic have unconventional approach but for virgin writers they could just be the right way forward . Don't judge, don't give up just write anything is possible .
As a debut writer I want to say who cares where your book is published ? If it's not published no one read it and determine its merit . Banksy uses walls and buildings as his canvas for art Strategic are rising to the demands of a new digital generation every publishing house has questionable practices like only taking on people they know leaving 98% of submissions unread and fueling the demand for "celebrity" novels . At least this company are bold enough and innovative enough to take a risk on unidentified talent. I've read alot of negativity about their company but you know what without a company like them breaking down frontiers and crashing walls you won't get anywhere . Strategic are there to give you a chance mae the most of it or forever be consigned to the slush pile of the mainstream publisher who by the way is not immune from litgation and scandal ...they just hide it better.
Strategic Publishing will not sell one book for you. It is all up to you! Thet can not get in any bookstore. I just read the CEO state that they have sold many books for their authors in bookstores ect. I am one of those author and they have not sold one book forme! They are deceptive and in some cases plain out lie!
GW Foote
I've done nothing but cry. I feel so violated...victimized by the scurrilous, scamming of Eloquent Books. It took me over ten years to research and write:Beside anOcean of Sorrow: Racial crimes committed during and after the Colonial occupation of South Africa. Now it was all in vain! My book is worthless! How can I face my family and friends... asking them to buy my book knowing it was produced under deception?
I could kick myself for being so trusting in my first ever submission to the WRONG agency. I wish I had opened my eyes, checked this site before throwing my long, hard work away. Just as well I didn't submit the sequel they wanted.
Lucia Mann
I have published joint-venture with Eloquent Books and have been disatisfied with their performance. Anyone that has just signed with them needs to check out www.sfwa.org. It will open your eyes.
Oh dear - I have just given them a signed contract along with $400.00 - though I must say they have been very quick to answer any questions I have. Will let you know how it goes. I really hope they are not a scam, but if they are, how come they have not been investigated?
Got their "Joint publishing" agreement today. I'm anxious to know who actually read my work. What they have in mind for editing. Who in the organization does the "polish" and stuff like that. I won't be using them, however I may give them a call and Mess with them for a while.
illegal business and charges
I registered for a domain with them and paid for a year of registering the domain and I have not received any communication nor I agreed any terms that the domain will be auto-renewed and I need to pay upfront every year for the service. Otherwise, I need to pay $18.95 administrative fee with Debt collectors. In fact it is not a debt collection when NCO financial send me the statement to pay $27.94 for a domain registration worth of $8 and if I failed to pay, it goes to my credit history. I tried to pay via credit card and they said there is another $8 administrative fee for that. I got raged and don't want to pay for the services that 1&1 never gave me nor I agreed ever to pay all these fees to 1&1. They just sent ONE email on saying the credit card on account is expired and never tried to contact me again in any form. The email they sent went into junk folders and there is no way I am aware of that within the time frame they mentioned in that email. This is OUT RAGIOUS and 1&1 is so reluctant to continue the account services for me with the normal prices and they wanted me to pay all these additional fees to continue with them.
If anybody can file a class action law suit or private sue the 1&1, I will be the most happy person on earth to enjoy the news and seeing 1&1 goes out of business. They are illegally doing business and trying to decieve the customers. THIS IS A BIG SCAM BY 1 AND 1 (1&1 internet inc).
If you need any further details, please contact me through my email and I will provide all the details needed if you can act against the stupid and illegal business 1 and 1.

those people are big time crooks...
Week later those bu@@@@@s sent me an invoice for over 17 pounds ! I am in the middle of struggle, but be aware !
1 and 1 is a phony company and their practices are unlawful.
keep away of them
Price is good for website beginner. I have recommend to so many friends. All my friends and I are doing online business.
But then once you want to cancel it? event I have believed I complete the cancellation, I still got charged, and for TWICE! 2 times fee for 6 months, and late fee, and they turn to NCO financial systems INC.
Here is my experience at 1and1.com:
5 years ago (between 2003 to 2004), I have sign up a domain $2.99/month. Fee charger per 3months. 10 days later, I found it too difficult for me, and I canceled the domain and canceled the package. the remain month fee was refunded.
one year after I signed up a second domain. a few days later I need more tool and I need to upgrade to a better package. it ad "update your package" but I found no way to update, nor a "Update" button.
So I just canceled this domain and cancel the package. and sign up my third domain (ad: 30 days money back guarantee!), this package include many tools that I need for business contacts "Chat room" "Guest book"...etc. Then I found that I could not link the chat room, and I could change the color of text and table color only! all the tools are white background, fix table look, no pic w/ text posting only.
I was so disappointed! I canceled the package in 15 days. its AD with 30 days money back guarantee, do 1and1.com 's guarantee means GUARANTEE? I called for refund, billing service refunded 2 months fee.
Jan 2008. My friend(who I recommended to 1and1.com) told me somewhat ignore those charming but complicated tools, I should upload files through FTP://...
So I come back to 1and1.com from yahoo.com, and signed up the 4th domain in 1and1.com. this was a 6 months per charge time. $23.94/6 months.
2 months after that, one of my friend with better website skill he asked a few friends and I for joining together, so he could upgrade to better package and less fee.
I canceled my domain at March 2008. I got second charge at 07/2008, I do the package cancellation step after I saw the charge fee at my credit card statement.
1st step "cancellation successfully" at cancel.1and1.com.
2nd step copied the number from confirmation email, paste at cancel.1and1.com. > "Cancellation Complete"
Jan 2009, $23.94 the 3rd charge on my credit card statement. I called 1and1.com billing. billing service said I did not complete my cancellation. So I repeated the cancellation step carefully.
1st step: "cancellation successfully" at cancel.1and1.com.
2nd step: at the 3rd day after step one, I copied the number from confirmation email, paste at cancel.1and1.com. > "Cancellation Complete"
Today 9/21/2009, I received 2 letter from NCO financial systems INC. $23.94 fee and $18.95 late fee (my credit card info expired, so the charge declined).
I am filling BBB.org for 1and1.com complaint!
am I the only one?
There money back guarantee means nothing, have been fighting for them for the last 6 months trying to get my money back. They keep on giving me a bunch of made up stuff about why they can not refund my money. If I was wealthy I would higher a lawyer to go after them to get my $7 back to prove a point There whole idea is to rip people off of small amounts so it is not worth it for one person to go after them. I would be happy to pro take in any law suit involving 1and1.
contact email: william@williamshannon.net
Same thing just happened to me. I #$QE% hate 1an1 and their sleazy business practices. This better not have gone on my credit...arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We also had 1 & 1 for a while. They automatically renewed the service even though we had switched to someone else. We were never sent any bill to pay for the renewal or anything. My husband and I found out that something was wrong when we received a bill in the mail from a collection agency saying we needed to the original renewal fee of $17.95 and also the admin fee of $18.95. We then checked our credit card acct only to see that they were indeed charging us. This was on the 8th of July. My husband called them to find out about getting a refund once the transaction cleared. He was told that that was pretty much impossible because they had sent him multiple emails telling him to pay. He checks his email lots of times during the day but never received anything from them. Both of us are really good about paying bills so this a surprise. He was later told that if he wanted to dispute this that he would have to contact some higher up that lived in Ireland. After that my husband decided to not worry about it and just paid the amount. He knew calling someone else was probably just a waste of time and energy. So the two transactions showed pending on the 8Th, by the 24th, there was only one transaction pending and the date had changed from the 8th to the 24th. Either Monday or Tuesday of this week both transactions were there and cleared. So hopefully we no longer hear from them.
www.1and1.com business practices
www.1and1.com has lots of complaints about their insane billing practices, not only on this complaint board but on the internet. Simply google "1and1". However, their power to run roughshod over customers stems from implicit agreement with their terms and conditions, available at this address:
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Gtc;jsessionid=267F17E78A3A61A2787B93B79ED2DAAC.TC60a?__frame=_top&__lf=Order-Tariff
This contract, which you implicitly agree when you sign up with them, gives them complete power and you none – except not to do business with them.
In my experience with 1and1, they do exactly what they say they will in these contract clauses. So BUYER BEWARE. They also say that email is the only method they use to contact you and that their records of email contact are final. If they say they sent you a notice via email, you cannot challenge the fact that you did not receive it. If your monthly automatic credit card debit is not processed by their system for any reason and you do not correct this immediately, they turn you over to a collection agency. The contract you have agreed to says that you agree to pay all collection fees. Once turned over to the collection agency (NCO is the one they use), 1and1 will not discuss billing, payment, etc. They lock your account so that you cannot use it and simply tell you to contact NCO. If you do not contact NCO, NCO will report you to credit reporting agencies and ruin your credit. Yes, even a $15 collection item on your credit report can reduce your credit score 75 points!
If you are considering using 1and1 or are an existing customer and have not read the agreement, you should. You cannot sign up for their services without implicitly agreeing to the contract whether you have read it or not. It gives them complete power, even to the extent that they don't have to deliver a service to you (covered in clauses 5 & 6 shown below). They don't promise to deliver anything specific. If they don't deliver, according to their contact you can do nothing except stop using them (which would be a pretty sane thing to do starting right now). Take them at their word. When you sign up, you agree that they don't have to deliver anything to you in exchange for your payments.

YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY HEREUNDER SHALL BE FOR YOU TO DISCONTINUE YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE AND TERMINATE THIS AGREEMENT. IN NO CASE SHALL 1&1, ITS DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AFFILIATES, AGENTS OR CONTRACTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, EXEMPLARY, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OR OTHERWISE RELATING TO THE 1&1 SERVICES. EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY SET FORTH IN ANY SEPARATE SOFTWARE LICENSE OR IN THIS AGREEMENT, 1&1 DOES NOT ENDORSE, WARRANT OR GUARANTEE ANY THIRD-PARTY PRODUCT OR SERVICE OFFERED OR OTHERWISE ACCESSED USING THE 1&1 SERVICES, AND 1&1 WILL NOT BE A PARTY TO OR IN ANY WAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MONITORING ANY TRANSACTION BETWEEN YOU AND ANY THIRD PARTIES. YOU HEREBY RELEASE 1&1 FROM ANY AND ALL OBLIGATIONS, LIABILITY AND CLAIMS IN EXCESS OF THESE LIABILITY LIMITATIONS. THE TOTAL LIABILITY OF 1&1 FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY ARISING OUT OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR STRICT LIABILITY IN TORT, OR ANY OTHER CLAIM RELATING TO THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE TOTAL SERVICE FEES PAID BY YOU TO 1&1 IN THE SIX MONTHS PRECEDING SUCH ALLEGED BREACH, BUT IN NO EVENT TO EXCEED $150, 000.
Even more unbelievable, and something that puts you at unknown risk for dealing with them is clause 9 in which you agree to the costs of defending them against unknown future actions taken by anyone against them. Read it for yourself. Have your lawyer read. Note that is says they will choose a lawyer and YOU will pay to defend them.
9. YOUR INDEMNIFICATION OF 1&1.
You agree that you shall fully defend and indemnify 1&1, including its officers, directors, owners, managing agents, attorneys, shareholders, related entities, heirs, and assigns, from any and all claims, demands, actions, suits, losses, liabilities, damages, injuries, fines penalties, costs and expenses, attorneys' fees, arbitration fees, mediation fees, expert expenses, and all other consequences of every kind, directly or indirectly resulting from any and all failure(s) of you or your agent(s) to fully comply with all duties, obligations and other provisions set forth in this Agreement, including, but not limited to, your warranties set forth in Section 7 or your violation of a third party's intellectual property rights. You further agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless 1&1, including its officers, directors, owners, managing agents, attorneys, shareholders, related entities, heirs, and assigns, from and against any and all claims, demands, actions, suits, loses, liabilities, damages, injuries, fines, penalties, costs and expenses, including, without limitation, reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of any property damage or recoverable economic loss incurred by a third party, to the extent such damage or loss is caused by any act or omission of you or your agents in connection with the performance of this Agreement. You agree that 1&1 shall have the right to participate in the defense of any such claim through counsel of its own choosing at your expense.
And then there are fees. See the clauses below:
3. FEES
3.1.
Certain 1&1 Services are subject to set-up, service, and domain service fees, pursuant to the Fee Schedule, and by registering for such 1&1 Services you authorize 1&1 to debit your Payment Account for any and all such fees.
3.2.
The Fee is due monthly, in advance of the provision of services, not later than the first of that month. In the event that 1&1 determines that the services of a collection agency are necessary or appropriate to collect amounts due under this paragraph, which determination shall be made in 1&1's sole and unfettered discretion, any and all collection agency fees and other costs of collection shall be added to any amounts due under this provision. [Most complaints I have seen on the internet have to do with 1and1's heavy handed and quite liberal use of a brutal collection agency called NCO and NCO's liberal reporting of 1and1 debts to credit reporting agencies as a collection matter. This instantly ruins your credit.]
3.3.
All Fees must be paid in United States Dollars in advance of the provision of services. 1&1 will charge the monthly fee and any additional fees to the Payment Account unless specifically provided otherwise. You also agree that 1&1 may automatically debit your Payment Account, without further authorization from you, for any renewal term, additional services, and any fees or expenses applicable to Your Services or Your Website, including but not limited to fees for excessive bandwidth use or other surcharges for services in excess of those included within Your Services or Your Web Site. If payment in full is not received by 1&1 from the provider of your Payment Account or its agents, you agree to pay all amounts due from you for Your Services upon demand by 1&1.
3.4.
1&1 may offer subsequent promotional rates or special offers, the terms of which may or may not be more favorable than the terms and conditions for Your Services. Any such promotions or modifications shall not effect your obligations under this Agreement. Promotional fees may be subject to additional terms and conditions which, to the extent they conflict with the terms of this Agreement, shall govern. Promotional fees and special offers may not be combined.
3.7.
You shall pay all costs of collection, including reasonable attorney's fees and costs, in the event any invoice requires collection efforts. All accounts referred to a collection agency shall be subject to an additional fee of $18.95, which must be paid in full before the account is reactivated.
BUYING BE WARE!

there is no need to repeat the pain and anguish others have already expressed for this company. so here is my prayer to 'the Lord'.
please send 1and1 out of business. whatever 1and1 has snatched/looted from people, take it back from them. may the owners of 1and1 go bankrupt and die as popper.
O lord save the weak.
For your sanity and business future NEVER USE 1 AND 1.
They will not help customers sort out disputes and they just lock web sites with NO warning.
1and1.com has arbitrarily taken down my database and websites - I am a fully paying customer who has been a loyal customer for over 5 years - and have over 65 domains registered with them.
insane financial practices
www.1and1.com does not have people working for them, only robots. They don't care about customer service or in pleasing or retaining customers. To show their distain for customer complaints, they thumb their noses at complaints by advertising on this website! Read their contract carefully before you buy. Their contract essentially makes them god and you nothing. It says they can do anything at any time and you can't do anything about it. Even though you always pay in advanced via credit card automatic debit, it says that if your credit card is declined for any reason (mine was declined because a new valid through date kicked in) that they can continue to bill you and if you don't pay they will turn you over to a collection agency. It says that you agree to pay all collection costs and that you cannot sue them. Read it! I didn't. When I did, I found it to be the most outrageous contract I have ever read. By agreeing to it you give away any right to do anything to 1and1 except to disconnect from them, to complain on boards like this and encourage others not to do business with them. Everything is in their contract which I imagine most people don't bother to read. It is very long. In it they tell you that if your credit card is denied for any reason and you don't pay that they will turn you over to a collection agency. Even though you pay in advance they continue "service" but lock your account and bill you rather than closing your account. What they don't tell you is that if you don't pay their collection agency fast, the collection agency (NCO -- another rotten outfit) will report you to credit bureaus. 1and1 disavows any knowledge of NCO's activities and simply says that you have to deal with NCO. They apparently don't care about complaints, lost customers, etc. because their business is based on signing up new customers while losing old customers. Yes, it's a totally insane business model, but it apparently is making someone some money for the moment. Look for a company with more care for it customers.

Same problem for me.
the same happened to me. but instead of complaining we should sue them
Is there anyway to make them take that off of your credit report? I also cancelled my service and they continued to bill me. after numerous calls my credit card finally expired and I didnt update it.. So they got no more money.. then they also sent a $30 bill to colections (must be thier standard number) and it just hit my credit report.. This is a bunch of BS... When I spoke to them once it hit collections, I explained to them that the site had been disabled for a long time (3 or 4 months) so I assumed that they FINALLY colsed it like I had requested.. and they said No.. we just froze it. WHAT A CROCK...
1&1 is ruining people's credit. After my credit card had a change...they attempted to charge me for several domains that I had purchased a year ago and I thought had let expire. Turns out, they update their contract online and anyone who buys services is bound to this contract.
There attempt to get a hold of me to notify me of this change was via a series of emails that went to my spam folder. No calls, no letter, just emails that went to my spam folder. They then sent the $30 charge to collections. Which, according to 1&1 is outlined in their BS online contract that clients are bound to. Unbelievable...what a heartless company. The 1&1 Supervisor that I spoke with seemed to laugh at my suggestion that this was an unfair business practice ("we have over 3M happy customers"). Franky, I am embarrassed to be in a country with folks who run a business this way.
They will continue to get away with this practice unless a class action is filed against them... The marketing arm of their organization is too strong. It is a shame. Hopefully folks will look at this before buying and understand what they are getting themselves into.
Even though they say you can't sue them in most states (I don't know about PA where they are based) they have no right to put that in there contract but will do it to try to fool people so people won't bather trying to sue them.
bad service
In May of 2017 1&1 somehow ended up changing the critical permissions on a
number of files and directories within my web space. All files in my
webspace reverted to basic read only permssions. This caused mission
critical database applications to malfunction. I contacted 1&1 after being
made aware of the problem within roughly 6 hours of the problem occurring.
It then took them 4 days to be able to let me change the critical
permissions back. All in all I figure I lost a few customers, a few
thousand website visits, 12 hours of my personal time, much of it on hold, a
pile of their support staff time, and all I got in return were apologies
and an offer to credit my account for one month of hosting. I suffered all
this loss over not being able to communicate directly with an administrator
that could patch my problem within 5 to 10 minutes. I was faced with call
centre hell, no solutions, and no resolutions. I was told to e-mail
automatons and robots to get my solution and despite the time spent there
was no resolution. I may be faced with very similar problems in the future
because I know that anyone at 1&1 Internet Ltd that could fix my problem has
not even heard my complaint, despite me spending 12 hours of my own time to
explain it and the simple solution to the problem I faced. From my
perspective 1&1 Internet Ltd. has zero company support for it's customers
when they are at fault for a problem. All promises of service have been
proved false. This company does not deserve anyones business, despite their
size.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I have use several web hosting sites over the years with mixed reviews but one & one really takes the cake when it comes to the poorest quality of customer service.
Why did I pick them? I fell for the very large ad campaign. Seeing them in every tech magazine I started to think they would be a good choice. I, like many others was fooled. The first time I had to use the tech support I was on the phone for 2 hrs trying to get a simple domain transfer. When it was finally over my website was down for nearly 3 weeks and no one could tell me why. In the end it was finally fixed but only after many hours on the phone. I was promised a credit for the lost time and I never received it. I called once about the credit but that was another wasted hour!
If you are building a simple website and aren't worried about losing money, or don't think you will need any help, use them (at great risk!). But if you are doing more complex stuff that you might need help I recommend you avoid one and one internet at all costs! Pay the extra money to use another service it's worth it.
Homer:
First notify 1&1 (corporate legal name) that you WILL be charging for all YOUR time, as well as costs and interest
until THEIR errors are straightened out- by them! Do it by registered mail, as well.
Also get the evidence you need from THEM- by ensuring you tell THEM your call is being recorded
"for quality and training purposes only" of course and do so. record the conversations with any recorder
even a smartphone on "voice notes" and call 1&1 using another speaker phone.
Record all their promises, and note the lapses in performance afterwards.
Send details of same in letters for each incident, back to them, with your mounting time billings.
Then after enough BS, as they have "been notified" start adding up your billable hours
and costs, sufficiently detailed that a prosecutor could easily understand it and do the accounting.
List the requests, the promises. List the evidence emails from you and them, giving dates;times. .
Add up more time, and send new bills, along with the latest interest and costs.
Add all the above to YOUR statement
Finally send a summary accounting bill of your dozens of contacts etc.l over months.
You 'll have a BIG file... for which THEY should pay YOU.
Give them say, 30 days to pay OR they are deemed in default AND YOU WILL PROSECUTE!
Then (I hope you have it in your jurisdiction)- file a court declaration and demand
in your local small claims court (by now- a few hundred or thousand bucks demand)
with all your supporting documents (include transcripts or extracts of the recordings which you can make yourself)
provided you also make the court and the Defendant copies (CDs) as well.
With any luck you will make money, AND help the community rid itself of one more Internet scourge!
BTW, ask the court in the conclusions of your demand, for:
damages + interest, + any other penalties in law + indemnity and costs, both judicial and extra-judicial.
.
AND go ahead with the case.!
I /GUARANTEE this will get better response than 100 people listing their very sad but true
experiences on this Forum.
Make sure and publish when you get a judgment.
Find their nearest office in your jurisdiction and EXECUTE the judgment.
And when and if that happy day arrives, and the Sheriff is seizing goods at their office
PLEASE make us all a You Tube Video !
:-)
I have posted my own complaint about this company, and I keep finding more people having similar and different issues with them. They want closing down. They now advertise on TV over here in UK.
treacherous fine print
1&1's billing policy is to hold credit card information on file. When payment is not made (For example, if the credit card on file expires) , 1&1 will not stop service like most service companies but will continue service and contract a collection agency for collections. Customers must officially close their accounts to stop service. This is not the standard billing policy consumers expect. While their policies are disclosed in their terms & conditions, 1&1 is clearly using their "fine print" to extract extra fees from customers wishing to close their accounts.

Didnt get notified of my renewed credit card. I was only notified by nco financial that it was sent to collections. So i ended up paying and cancelling it and know i just recieved another bill from 1 and 1in the mail saying that its going to collections.

Worst. Company. Ever.
You pay for 6 months of service. After that six months they auto-renew without telling you and send you straight to a collection agency - WHICH THEY OWN. That way they can justify charging you an extra $20 "administration fee."
When you dispute they tell you they will try to ruin your credit.
Oh - and you cannot cancel your account online. You have to FAX THEM YOUR CANCELLATION REQUEST.
And they lost mine. Twice.
WORST COMPANY EVER. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH 1&1!
I have same problem too, they send to collection agency for 8.99 and 18.95 for Administration fee. I never receive any notice from them about the collection until I received the statments from collection agency(NCO)..
Stay away from 1and1.com. They are suck to do business with.
1&1 Internet is the WORST hosting company I've ever dealt with! Do not do business with this company if you value your time!
Their billing department closes over the weekend and they refuse to help with any issues. If your site goes down for any billing issues, you have to wait until Monday to reach anyone.
No one is empowered to help - all they do is refer you to their complaint department.
They do not call you back, they do not care if they help you or not. Stay away from 1&1 Internet!

I feel like an idiot. I was sucked in by the cheap monthly fees and its was a HUGE mistake. 1&1 is either a scam or they are the worst service provider I have ever seen. I cancelled my renewall a week before it was due by email and even followed up by phone to confirm. Weeks later I started getting emails and finally someone agreed that it should have been cancelled. Now months later after not hearing from them I am getting collection calls and letters. I am emailing 1&1 and and I get boilerplate answers saying I didn't reply so the froze my account so I would contact them and then sent me to collections. First of all no one EVER tried to contact me and secondly, what account! I freakin cancelled it! Thats the whole point. This is what you get with 1&1 and it is mind knumbing. I dont care how little money you have to spend...1&1 is not a company to deal with. Run as fast as you can! I could go on and on but I've wasted enough of my time on these idiots.
I cannot begin to say enough bad about this 1&1, from their poor product to their awful online instructions to their unbelievably incompetent tech help. Seriously, all I needed was to set up a simple domain, forward it and set up one email account and it took 5-7 calls, and close to 2 MONTHS! The tech people, who literally speak as though they're in 4th grade, gave me exact wrong information, which I questioned at the time, but they assured me it was correct. In both instances, they were in fact wrong. And I am talking basic computer maneuvers. I cannot wait to dump them, and go back to Go Daddy.
I chose and paid for a site through http://www.1and1.com. The site did not work for me. They called and asked if I wanted to renew. I said NO. SO, they turned me over to collection for the renewal charges. When I called they said it was my fault because I didn’t cancel my unwanted renewal. I spoke to others and this is there standard practice.
In 2011 I informed them to cancel my domain name and stop charging me. But this year they charge me again. After calling them and showing the email of 2011, they admitted they got the information but did not cancel it. But they insist I have to pay although it's their fault. Otherwise they will send the bill to debit collector. What a ###ing joke.
