My mother was a resident at autumn wind assisted living in mineola, tx. She went on hospice and they denied her hospice nurse access to my mother. When she was at end of life, they refused to let me be with her. By the time they did give me access, she was non-responsive and died 25 minutes later. She passed on 4/29/20 and her rent was paid through the end of may (check had already cleared). I called owner/administrator, mary cable and arranged that my husband and I would move her out of her apartment on 5/8/20 at 10am. We needed closure, we wanted time to go through her belongings to sort, and pack. Mary cable knew this and agreed. She phoned me after 5pm the day before the scheduled move-out to inform me that she had let her maintenance crew go into my mother's apartment to pack her things and they had moved it to a dirty garage. She said, "she had done us a favor." now we were going to have to unpack her belongings, to sort and then repack... All in a hot garage. When we arrived on friday morning some of her belonging were in the garage, some were back in the apartment. Pictures and items strewn on the floor, shoes in a big heap, giant boxes with items piled. It was devastating to see my mother's possessions treated without respect, to know that strange men were rifling through her drawers, and all without my permission. There were also many items missing. I wanted an explanation, and all the owner/administrator could do was blame her staff. She acknowledged that I should have been able to be with my mother during those final hours, but it was the on-call nurses fault, because she had her phone turned off. She blamed the pilfering of my mother's belongings on her maintenance crew. This is not at all how to treat a resident and their family at end of life. Her actions were without compassion, respect, and dignity. We will never get back those final hours with my mother, and the way they violated and treated her belongings, like trash. We will always remember the feeling of heartbreak. Please do not consider moving your loved one to autumn wind assisted living in mineola, tx. Your loved one will be treated like a transaction. They do not have systems and protocols in place, instead they make it up as they go.
