My favorite bitcoin wallet
I really love this app! I have a background in law enforcement... From my perspective, I would only change one thing. It has to do with when I enter a PIN number. I've investigated a quite a few robberies during my career and know how the future of robberies will happen. I wish you requested PIN number to only send from my account. EXAMPLE... If I meet someone from craigslist to sell something... I have to enter my PIN to share my public key. So, let's say I'm meeting a stranger and now, I enter my pin and hold it up for them to scan... And WHAM! They snatch the phone out of my hand, run off with my phone and can now steal my bits cause I entered my pin for the bad guy. We don't need a PIN number to protect us from receiving money... We only need to prevent someone stealing from us. Change it to this concept... And I'll write an awesome review with an all star rating. You will be the only wallet that has thought of this.
I love this wallet
When Apple started allowing Bitcoin apps in the App Store I was disappointed by the lack of options. Even with apps from the big players like circle, I wanted a simple, easy, secure deterministic wallet for my iPhone.
Within weeks, Aaron V came through with Bread. It's been the best wallet for iOS since day one, and it continues to improve.
It supports "Bitcoin:" hyperlinks (something circle *stilldoes not do), he's added support for Touch ID, currency conversions, and other features in the meantime since it first launched.
If I want to teach someone with an iPhone about Bitcoin, this is the app I tell them to use.
Note: never store more bitcoins on your phone than you can afford to lose. This applies to any app on any phone, treat it like you would treat your physical wallet. You wouldn't keep your life savings in your pocket in cash, don't keep your life savings on your phone in Bitcoin. And always protect your password and recovery key!
JUST DON'T USE
Developer does not specify fees up front nor does the "Remove Standard Fees: Ask" work. I don't mind paying a mining fee but the amount was far higher than expected and I'm not happy about this. I would have waited until I arrived home to use my other wallet but wanted to give this a try. The non disclosure of fees NEEDS TO BE CLEAR as the industry standard for mobile/offline wallets is not being used with this app. There is NOTHING listed in the description or on the developers website about these fees.
Why even use BTC with the amount charged to use this app?
I RELUCTANTLY gave the app 1 star because of the simplicity and ease of use but it's certainly not an app for those who frequently use BTC's, would like to adopt BTC's for everyday use or those with security in mind.
Moving forward, the issues with security and fees needs to be addressed by the developer and/or Apple. If it isn't, I would not be surprised if this app was pulled from the App Store.
Perfect
Finally..after being a victim of the painfully slow crypto.com, and the thugs at binance.us who freeze your money with no warning for days after a ridiculously long verification process. And a couple others..too but as long as BRD is around I’ll be purchasing with them first. Finally a company that appreciates their customers and makes them feel respected rather than an imposter and dishing out extra verification processes *coughpaybis and changelly *cough*. Sorry I’ve just had the worst and most unnecessary experiences with all of these companies. Then BRD came through super clutch and saved the day.
Every part of the process from the moment I downloaded the app to transferring my whole purchase worth of btc out went super smooth and insanely fast. I’ll add I was able to after the first confirmation of my very first purchase within minutes of registering. I made a sizable purchase for my first and I expected problems/delays like always and not one. Thanks BRD A+++++
Who is BRD? Why is the app so cluttered?
I’ve been looking for months trying to find a copy of Breadwallet to use on my iPhone. I really liked that wallet — it beat everything else out there on simplicity and usability.
I have no idea what this BRD is, but it’s clearly something completely different from who knows who. Different name (meaningless name, unlike the discontinued Breadwallet. What is BRD? Some brand of motor oil?)
It was purposely made as ugly as possible (because this kind of ugly can’t happen by accident,)
But worst of all is that it’s been jammed full of nonsense acronyms for every remaining scamcoin still ripping people off. I’m surprised they didn’t include Paycoin.
This app reminds me of the Bitcoin Investment Trust. It just shouts “bloatware, developers think bitcoin is a scam, so they just threw in every scam crypto they could find. I’d expect it will scramble your keys, and lose your transactions.”
I wish the old open source code that was called Breadwallet could be installed on my iPhone. That was the only mobile wallet I trusted. Now there’s nothing but Coinbase.
Need to add custom transaction fee’s
I have been a long time user of the BRD app and I enjoy using it. It does its job and I use it on a daily basis to send and receive bitcoin for in person transactions. However, I believe it is missing a key feature.
The developers need to allow the user to control the transaction fee size. Currently there are two options “normal” and “economy” I understand this is simple and easy to use for the average user. But during times of high activity or slow blocks we need an express button/custom button to add in extra money to get the transaction included quicker. I just sat for two hours with a customer to wait for a single transaction even though it was sent via “normal” fee.
Consider this a feature request. I would love to change this to a 5 star review once this feature is added. It is standard in most wallets.
Edit/reply to developer: it was not a matter of a block being found. I watch 6-7 blocks get found while my transaction remained unmined. I used the “normal fee” setting which amounted to about $0.10 at the time. If I was able to send it with let’s say a $0.50 fee I’m sure it would have been confirmed in the first block.
The best wallet
This is the best and only wallet you should use on iOS, as its a *realBitcoin SPV client unlike other apps that rely on 3rd party servers that can go down and remove privacy. I only recommend this wallet!
Things I would add or I would like to see: TouchID support, TouchID requests only during sending, payment received notifications (while in the app, a sound notification would be sufficient along with pop-up), 24-word BIP39 support, BIP39 password support, BIP44 support, Bluetooth BLE "Airdrop-like" support, adjustable fees, ability to see wallet balance while writing out a transaction, ability to have total automatically adjusted for fees if entering in the full wallet balance, color contrast between money exiting and money entering wallet on the transaction list, and ability to have the app launch into the camera scan feature during start.
I noticed this app crashes after entering in a BIP39 mnemonic phrase. But re-launching it seems to get it back in working order. I also noticed that after using the app for over a 100 or so transactions the app no longer works and requires and new wallet generated (or new unique BIP39 wallet). I guess the bloom filters become to big. Anyway, keep up the amazing work!
Transactions stuck + hidden Fees
When exchanging BTC with Eth, you don’t allow increasing the fee. And since you set it at an an incredibly low amount, I now have .5 BTC stuck on the chain without getting any confirmations. It’s been going on for over 8 hours. I wanted to trade and take advantage of your promotion, even paying the incredibly ridiculously Bread fee if ~$70 dollars to exchange BTC -> ETH.
I’m very disappointed and will not longer be using this app or recommending it to friends
Update:
After almost 2 days and using some BTC transaction “accelerators” I found online, my transactions finally completed.
What I find unacceptable is that I found references online that BRD users, for upwards of a year now, have requested the ability to change the BTC transaction fee when sending or exchanging.. i.e. countless users of this app have experienced the same fear and frustration by having their transactions be unconfirmed for who knows how long. So basically the app devs/ product team have been aware of how this has negatively affected users (and their money) and have done nothing. That alone should be enough reason to not use this product. How that feature wasn’t in the MVP or at least on the road map directly after v1 also speaks volumes.
What I also find unacceptable is that even in the “history” screen, there is zero mention of how much was paid to the BRD app for the privilege of exchanging one coin to another ( hint: the fees are insanely high.. I paid upwards of $70 dollars to turn some BTC into Eth). How the product team thought that info wasn’t something people would want to see on the history screen is absolutely ridiculous to me.
I’ve followed this app and their coin for some time now. And I really, really wanted to like it.
I likely will never again use this product and will advise everyone I know to do the same.
The best Bitcoin wallet!
The Bread app is amazing! Really love the clean and simple user interface, and it’s so cool that you don’t need to create an account, or enter a username/email, none of that! You just set up a pin and your write down your 12 word seed and boom, you’re good to go. Everything is super fast, responsive, and user friendly. Definitely 5 stars!
Some constructive critiques:
1) I really love Google 2FA (2-Factor authentication) especially for sending payments. It would be great if you guys could add it as an optional security feature in the Security Center.
2) In the “Send BTC” screen, I think it should be more obvious that you can change the Bits to USD, like maybe 2 buttons side by side, or showing both words somehow? I also think the term “Bits” is a little confusing to novice users, maybe “amount of BTC” is sufficient.
Just some very minor glitches/bugs that I experienced that I’m sure could easily be fixed:
1) After activating/setting up the wallet, I got a message asking if I would share anonymous data with Bread, and after choosing yes, the same window came up again asking to share the anonymous data, and again I chose yes.
2) When I click receive BTC the pop-up window pops up twice in a row for some reason. (it seems that things popping up twice is a recurring glitch throughout the app.)
3) Sometimes when I click “Send BTC” the window does not pop-up.
4) Also Buy Screen is sometimes very slow to load, or doesn’t load at all. Just shows the loading sign and “Dismiss”. So I’m forced to close the app.
It should be noted that all issues were resolved once I manually closed/shut down the app and opened it back up again, and re-entered the PIN.
Hope that was helpful. Anyway, great job guys, keep up the great work. Really excited for the upcoming ERC20 support! :)
Awesome thanks for the response developer team, I appreciate it! Btw where can I store my Bread BRD tokens in the app? I only see Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash wallets. Do we have to wait for ERC20 support first?
Wallet Problems
09/02 Update:
Responding to the developer response:
Storing my empty wallet in persistent memory to “protect my money” is overkill and not user friendly.
Restoring my wallet is the job for the the seed phrase. Adding more obstructions to this just makes it more complicated/confusing for me and wastes my time trying to find answers around this.
08/28 Update:
I wanted to transfer my wallet onto another target phone. However, the target phone has an empty brd wallet in it. How do I start from scratch?
I tried deleting/reinstalling the app. But now the app seems to remember the previous empty wallet and the PIN. I also want to delete the existing PIN. Why is this so complicated now?
The app should check/know that the wallet has nothing in it and just let the user delete it.
Why can’t I just simply delete the app and start from scratch?
05/04 Update:
I just transferred my wallet to another iPhone. The transfer went ok except it took OVER 3.5 HOURS TO SYNC on the new iPhone!? Note I have very fast wifi and the device is sitting 3 feet from my router. Ok so it needs to sync again. Fine.
A second problem: You can’t use the iPhone while it’s syncing. Launching into another app not only stops the sync but, WHEN YOU GO BACK INTO BRD, THE SYNC STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN FROM ZERO!
So you can’t use your new phone for at least 3.5 hours if you transfer your wallet.
Starting again from zero is UNREASONABLE. The very least this app should do is remember where it was and save the current sync and start again where it left off.
Original Review:
This is a good no frills Bitcoin only wallet. I had no problems using it over several transactions. A few issues though:
1) It would be good to have the option to convert to satoshi units which all bitcoin exchanges use. The app currently uses mBTC units. It's annoying to keep having to convert this to satoshis and back again. The app should do this for you.
2) Be able to control the transaction fee.
I noticed other reviewers were asking for these changes as long as 2 years ago(!) why hasn't this been done?
Invalid mnemonic code and transaction got stuck because of low fee
I tried to recover a wallet with a mnemonic recover phrase which was created by an old version of Breadwallet some time ago. Sadly I was told that the recover phrase was invalid. I’m pretty sure the recover phase was correct. But maybe I wrote down the wrong phrase.
Since I am a programmer, I downloaded the breadwallet code from GitHub. I believed that most of the words I have should be correct. There might be only one or two words are incorrect. I tried all possible combinations with code but no luck. I finally changed the code to bypass the phrase validation and used the recover phrase I had. It worked and I got my money back.
Another problem with Bread wallet is the low transaction fee. My two transactions was stuck because of the low fee. The fee 50 SAT/B was fine couple weeks ago but now it’s two low. Why not give user an option to custom it? I saw online discussion about this issue but the breadwallet developer insisted that the fee was reasonable. Bitcoin world changed every day. It might be ok yesterday but it might not today. I ended to pay the miner 50 dollars to get my transaction accelerated.
Anyway, I still think breadwallet has its value but the PM and the developers should listen to the user and act quickly.
Update: got a response from Breadwallet developers. They said “Thank you for your review and the feedback! Regarding fees: Occassionaly transactions will take a long time to process even if they have paid an appropriate network fee. Since this is dependent on the bitcoin network as a whole, it is nearly impossible for us to predict perfectly. We understand a situation of intense network congestion is a great inconvenience, and we will continue improving the app and how fees are calculated so the experience is more convenient."
I’m not satisfied with the response. I don’t think it’s nearly impossible to predict the fee. You can check the mempool size. If there are tons of transactions with 50sat/b fee are stuck in the mempool, there is no reason to use 50sat/b. It should not take more than one week to implement this. Also, if you cannot predict the right fee, you should implement custom fee specified the user.

I’m REALLY UPSET
My BRD wallet would NOT sync all of a sudden. For days now it’s been stuck at 16% synced and coins I transferred over are lost somewhere and it would NOT sync!
I’m completely freaking out and I would’ve NEVER EVER used this app if I had known it was going to be just stuck!
My funds r lost and I really need help and all the support told me was just sync over night while the app is just open the whole time. Hasn’t worked!I even tried setting up on another device and that did not work EITHER! I’m. Freaking out big time. This app is ruining my life. Will someone pleeeease help?!

Unable to Recover Wallet
Lost my wallet due to how this app handles forgetting pin!
After a long time without accessing the wallet, I was prompted for a 6 digit pin I had forgotten.
I tried a few pins quickly and without warning the app started adding an exponentially increasing delay!
After a few more attempts it just wiped my wallet!
If they had said from the very beginning the number of attempts left I would have been significantly more cautious and would not have lost this wallet.
Since its been years since I have made this wallet I have no idea where I placed the recovery phrase (something they should remind you to backup every few months).

Ridiculous
2/5: This app is absolutely ridiculous. The app should have offered the ability to save the 12 word recovery phrase with iCloud when i created the account as the other wallets do. The customer support claims there is no other way to retrieve the funds. There goes my lifetime savings of crypto. Steer clear. I’ll stick with Coinbase but not the wallet. As well as banks that actually help me create a new password or pin if i forget it.
2/5 Update: I see i am not the only one having issues. STAY OFF OF THIS APP! They are stealing money from all of us and using it for their own benefit to the tune of millions if not billions of dollars.

App has been having issues
This app used to be one of the best. Now I’m having different issues.
On a previous build, I would have coins disappear for hours or days at a time. It’s not clear to me if this has been fixed. It was possible to recover coins as far as I know, but it’s just an annoying process to go through.
On the current build, the app won’t even open. It just crashes when I try to open it. Again, I could probably try deleting the app, reinstalling, and recovering coins, but most users probably don’t want to have to do that every time they want to send crypto.
I can’t feel good about recommending this app anymore.
Edit: 1/12 - still can’t open this app without it crashing
