I had the 'Gold' with Consumers Energy Appliance Service plan for over 10 years while I payed approx 10,000$. During this time they had to replace a 500$ valve on the furnace and a capacitor on the AC unit. The AC recently started to leak freon and the contractor recommended to replace both units - as the freon are no longer approved by the government. We did that (I payed approx 10k after rebates) and got reimbursed by Consumers 750$ for AC unit and 750$ for the furnace. Since both units are now under 10 years warranty I tried to cancel the plan as it is no longer needed. I was told that I need to wait 12 more months or, if I decide to cancel, I would need to reimburse Consumers Energy for the 2 checks in the amount of 750$ each. So basically we spent 10k over the years for nothing, we could have saved the money and just replace the units after 10 years, we would have saved 10k. It is shocking to me how they want to recover some of the money they had to pay, let alone the fact that technically they were supposed to replace the units if they could not fix them!

Immediately contact Consumers Energy's customer service and request an explanation for their policy, specifically the requirement to wait 12 months or repay the checks when canceling the plan. Highlight the fact that you’ve paid around $10,000 over the years, and the reimbursement barely covers what you’ve invested. Demand a fair resolution, such as canceling without repayment, as you’ve already replaced the units. If they refuse, escalate by filing a complaint with the Michigan Public Service Commission or consumer protection agencies. Keep all records for future action.
