We signed up for a Diploma to earn our livelihood and used the training grant available from Skills Future and WDA Subsidy.
The contract between us and EDES Academy Pte Ltd is now over and we still have not received the certification (no news on the examination dates). Time was wasted, we still can't earn the livelihood and this is wasting of taxpayer's money through the utilisation of these funds.
The government agencies are setup to help Singaporeans with lifelong learning and those who did career switch. In this incident the agencies involved displayed a lack of overseeing on this issue from all perspectives.
Case Details
1 We enrolled for CIBTAC Level 3 Diploma in Massage with EDES Academy in Mar 2016 with a course duration of 5 months. We enquired on the exam dates to the UK governing body, ie CIBTAC, and we were told that we don't have exam dates in Sep. They replied us that EDES Academy was not allowed to conduct examinations.
2 Following this, we wrote to CPE (Council for Private Education) on this case and we were told that it is under investigation. No help was rendered with alternatives to resolve the issue we were facing with EDES. The welfare of the students was not actively looked at.
3 In the meantime, the Teacher of EDES Academy was under police investigation. Our classes were stopped and we had no examination dates. The following options were offered by the management of EDES Academy :-
i. Wait for the completion of investigation in order to be given the exam dates for CIBTAC;
ii. Enrol with 1939 Art Academy for a Diploma in massage (ITAC), which has fewer subjects and lesser hours of study. This is not equivalent to CIBTAC;
iii. Refund the monies for this course. However, the grant by Skills Future fund of $500 has been utilised.
In our dealings with EDES Academy, we were left with an impression of a smokescreen. The information was manipulated, laying the blame on the following parties - Teacher Edward Wong, Cyndi Wong, Administration Manager of EDES Academy, Jackie Xu, Director of EDES Academy and his mother Christina, founder of Colour Face Academy and shareholder of EDES Academy.
EDES Academy was irresponsible to the students in the following manner: -
• Did not replace a qualified teacher to continue teaching the CIBTAC syllabus;
• Did not offer the students to be transferred to other CIBTAC Centres in Singapore offering the same course;
• Did not follow up with the students diligently, after the options were given since Aug.
Please address the issues we have raised.
Yours sincerely
Jointly( R Kalpana and Lynn Loke)
