I went into International Bakery on Thursday 1/24/2007 and ordered a half-sheet Sponge Bob Square pants cake for my 6 yr old daughter. I need the cake for Saturday 1/27/2007. On 1/27/2007 I picked the cake up for the party and left the store. But when we cut the cake at 6:45 p.m. I noticed that there was lots of cake left and only about 7 pieces had been eaten. Finally, my guest came to me and explained that the cake was stale. I knew the bakery closed at 7 p.m. so at 6:55 p.m. I called the bakery and explained the situation to the lady on the phone. She simply told me to bring my receipt and the cake back in the morning and I will be given a refund. Today, on 1/28/2007 at 10:30 am I returned to the bakery with my 6 yr old and explain the situation to the cashier. She then takes the cake in the back and the owner comes out and ask am I the person with the cake? I said yes, and he said to me that he couldn't give me a refund. I asked the man why did he have a policy that states for returns bring your receipt, a portion of the product, and the original packaging (which I had). The man starting getting arrogant and asked me to get out of his store. I then called the cops. Overall, I ended up without $70.00, a spoiled birthday party, and a cake that the owner put his hands in.

Hello to all!... I have been purchasing goods from International Bakery for years! I strongly disagree with this comment. Yes there are times that the cake may not be ready exactly on time BUT THEY ARE HUMAN! Everytime I walk in there i feel like I am helped so much and that satisfies me... i dont know about anyone else but i gave the new owners a chance and they are certainly great people! I was flabergasted by the way they try to help you with absolutly anything! They have been there for two years and i have noticed that they kept the same bakers, workers, and cake decorater i; i also see the old owners in there sometimes. I love International Bakery and i will continue going there and hopefully you will too... everyone makes a mistake here and there lets not over exagerate the little things they never count.

Hello -

The people at the bakery were very nice. BUT, I'm sorry to say, that I ordered 3 cakes for my brothers party. Additionally they gave me a sample piece. I did not try the sample piece until I left the store and it was incredibly stale. I hoped and prayed that it was just because it was the end of the day and the pieces had been cut earlier and I was in a rush because the party was starting in an hour. Later on I found out that the cake was incredibly stale from the kids and they didn't even eat one. I tried a piece myself and it was HORRIBLY dry and stale. A sample piece and entire cake both not up to par? Now I have 2 un-opened cakes in my house and I can't imagine that they are any better. The woman even told me they just came out. I've never ordered a cake from a bakery that was that stale. The middle wasn't even soft. I can go on forever, but it was just bad.

When you spend months or weeks planning a surprise or a birthday you only want everything to be perfect. They are human, but so are we. I understand that it is possible to have good experiences, however we had a poor one and should be free to express it.

P.S. After typing this I called them first to see if they could help me out. They did not follow their store policy, which was to bring back the cake in the original packaging. She asked me if I was in need of money in order to justify why I am calling about the cakes. I was not being rude AT ALL. She told me I was wasting my time and she was rude. The woman hung up on me. I will call the better business bureau to file a complaint.

I completely disagree with your views towards international bakery.Tther cake is not stale. on feb.15 i went to a party and my friend got her cake made at international and it was DELICIOUS! EVERYONE WAS saying how good it was. I believe that international had a bad day and they should of gave you your money back. But what can you say. People make mistakes.

I am a member of the family that used to own the bakery. After it changed management, things have definitely changed. So those loyal customers whom have gone to the bakery for years, thank you for your years of service but do understand that these problems are not the first we've heard of.
It upsets me to read that this has happened but it does not surprise me.

Are any of recipes from the Family available? I’d love to make the cheese or prune danish. And the washington loaf (bread pudding)

If you had a large order and it took a lot of work to make, obviously the cake is made a day to 2 days before you pick it up. They used to get at least 30 cake orders PER DAY, and that's NOT including the walk in cake orders that were made for SAME DAY pick up. Their pastries and cakes are delicious, and if you disagree you are a person who is extremely hard to please and are used to taking advantage of store policies for the slightest mishaps. Peace out.

Does anyone remember a loaf cake that had layers and frosting, and I think chocolate drizzle? Maybe walnut cake? I used to purchase for my parents all the time. Would love to try and replicate. Doubtful to replicate but something even close. :) Thank you
Loved International Bakery when living in NJ. Miss it too.
