ohio state student (osu) off-campus alert!
i lived in his apartment for a year. very very old apartment.
1) carpet very old. I had skin rash allergy on my face because of that.
2) heating system and electric system are so old, - bill doubles compared to newer apartments.
3) windows are so old that i didn't feel i was in america.
4) because apartment is so old, he WILL charge you for ANYthing not working or falling apart when you move out, REGARDless whether it's your fault or not.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Do NOT rent from this landlord. I heard horror stories from other tenants, and I was correct. He is a typical "slum lord."Reasons to stay away:
*he charges different amounts for the SAME apt, just for different tenants
*he will find anything to keep your deposit for
*he will charge you for steam cleaning the carpet when you move out, then change the carpet anyway (with OLD carpet).
*he will do shotty work
Yeah, I thought I was the only one dealing with possibly a bad unit, so I started looking to file more complaints. Looks like I'm not the only one on this board where it was so bad that I had to take time out of my day to let everyone else know.
My apartment had mice running around during the winter months. My water has been perpetually leaky, and the fixtures might be ancient (looks like something corrosive has eaten straight through the metal at some of these places.) There is rust everywhere and when I first moved in, I had to replace more than half of the light bulbs in the apartment because they were not working or were missing.
There has also probably been countless times that he has sent me a "I'm going to show your apartment at ____" text that was the next day (less than 24 hours notice).
Horrible landlord, if you are reading this, DO NOT rent from him!
Here are some things my two roommates and I had to deal with during the past year:
* He makes a big fuss about fixing things in the apt that were broken when my roommates and I moved in (The washer and dryer).
* The apt carpet was filthy, there were other girl's hair and dog hair all over the carpet, horrible, because I am allergic to dogs.
- Funny thing is, he made no comment after I made the complaint, and after the year he charged us for steam cleaning the carpets, which he apparently never did before we moved in.
* Charges us for the battery of the alarm
* Complains that he couldn't rent his crappy apt because my roommates and I were too messy, and tells us we need to get our ### together so he can rent the place.
* Doesn't give 24 hour notices before showing the apt.
* Actually came in our apt without even giving us ANY notice (Can I sue?).
* Charges us for unplugging the refrigerator at the end of our lease for cleaning it.
* Too many other things I can't even remember, just DON'T RENT HIS APARTMENTS!
Awful landlord. The carpet was filthy the day I moved in. The bottom of my feet were black. Windows rattled and heating and cooling bills were through the roof. He also wouldn't let me know when someone was coming to fix or check on something in my apartment. He was my first landlord and the second day I lived there after I got home from class some random man was fixing my closet doors, talk about terrifying. Most days I would come home and someone would be in there without my knowing. Would also show my apartment with only a 12 hour notice. Took most of my security deposit for stupid reasons as well, mostly for the dirty carpet which was dirty the day I moved in! DO NOT RENT FROM THIS GUY! Nothing good to say.
Absolutely horrible landlord. DO NOT RENT FROM HIM. Since day 1 of living in our apartment we have had nothing but problems. On top of that every time we needed something fixed he never came out. It was someone he hired or his parents. Then same thing when he was showing the apartment. The furnace has gone out so many times in the middle of winter it isn't funny. And he wanted to come the next day... when it was -10 out. He over charges for this crap apartment. We have had so many leaks, furnace break downs, so much noise from our neighbors, and No parking at all in the lot. Even though he promised it. Unless you want a year of stress and crap don't live here! Also when trying to fix the parking situation he became extremely rude and arrogant. Not the landlord you want. Definitely a slum lord of campus.
DO NOT RENT FROM HIM! You will regret it. I had to always wear socks/shoes because if not, my feet would turn black. Gave way less than a 24 hour notice to let me know when maintenance was going to be done. Also, our AC went out and water got all over our carpet in puddles - when we asked him to come clean it with a water vacuum he made it seem like such an inconvenience even though it wasn't our fault. He also tried to tell us our AC was going to be out for a week, it wasn't until I basically demanded he fix it ASAP for him to fix it. Maintenance will bang on your door at 8AM until you answer or else they will try to come inside with their keys (thank god we had a sliding lock that prevented them from coming in), and they walked into my apartment multiple times because I didn't have enough time to answer the door, as I was in the middle of getting dressed. Also, when I first moved into the apartment, half of the electrical outlets didn't work, and I had to stay with a friend because there were no lights working. Utilities will be crazy, insulation is pretty non-existent, and the apartments are truly not work the $700-$800 he charges per month for rent. This was my first apartment and rest assured I learned my lesson with what to look for in a landlord. HORRIBLE
I actually had a great experience with this landlord. I did not feel I was overcharged at all. When I wanted to bring a cat into the apartment he worked with me even though the lease said no pets. He was also very helpful when I had my sister move in with me one year and then my fiancee the next. I rented from Jason for three years and had a much better experience with him than with prior landlords. Complaints I had were answered within the same day and someone was sent to look into them promptly. I enjoyed the fact that it is a family business. I got to know his brother and parents a little bit and even got some advice when I became pregnant. I only paid 515 as the initial move-in rate, and the rates were not raised exponentially while I lived there, despite adding two cats, another tenant, and, eventually, a baby. I am no longer renting from Jason because we moved out of state, but if we were staying in OSU campus area, I certainly would be still, and have recommended him to friends countless times. I also received back a good chunk of my deposit with a checklist pointing out exactly why certain money was taken out, and I felt the amount was fair.
The man is a slumlord without a doubt. Total [censored]. Condescending. The whole apartment was a [censored] when I moved in that I didn't even know where to begin with putting in the initial complaints. I had to get a new fridge the first week I moved in because it made all my food taste bad even after being cooked. Was also a [censored] about that, made it seem like I was inconveniencing him in some way. The hot water never lasted more than 10 minutes, at one point there was none and he didn't believe me about it not working until the maintenance man came out. Back to the 10 minute showers after that. The place was so gross and I tried to make it cute and clean but the carpets...THE CARPETS. I actually had a dream that he replaced the carpets at one point! I can't make this up. Original carpets. There was a strange mass in the ceiling, when people came over they joked that it had a tumor. THEN he took 60 days and 2 emails to get me back my security deposit that totaled out to be $50! Half of the things he charged me for were already messed up. [censored] this guy. He takes advantage of college students.
I have not lived at any of his properties but I have scheduled for 2 apartment tours on 2 separate occasions through his website. When I got to each tour no one was there to show me the apartment. Upon calling his office I was told that “that property was already rented out, I don’t know why it’s still on the website.” He offered no apology which I felt was rude since (a) I had to travel for each tour, (b) I filled out a questionnaire to make sure I was suitable applicant, and (c) their offices reached out to me an hour prior to each appointment to confirm the showing, which would have been an opportune time to let me know that the apartment was not available.
I will not be attempting to tour any of their properties again.
Upon reading the other complaints on this thread I am very happy that he did not show up for the tours I scheduled. It seems like I dodged a bullet by not renting through him.
