July 4th, 2023 Jody Moeggenberg Contacted me through FB when I was inquiring about a different roofing company in Gaylord. He claim he had worked for that company, but they were shady and ripped people off. He stated that he had opened his own company because he wanted to ‘do right’ by people, especially those affected by the tornado or who had lower incomes.
He gave me a quote, which was very reasonable. I met him and his wife, and they seem like nice people that really wanted to help and fix my roof. Jody would go on about having pride in his work, and how he wanted to build trust within the community.
As an act of goodwill, they offered to put up the rest of the siding on my house for free (it had been partially done since we bought the place). They did put most of it up, but didn’t finish around the electrical meter and didn’t wash any of the siding pieces off (the previous owners had them just stacked, so they were dirty) but I didn’t mind too much since that wasn’t the project they were hired for.
It did take a little while to get him the deposit due to waiting periods for our line of credit and such, but he was paid. He kept saying there were issues with the dumpster he ordered, so he started work before the dumpster was delivered. Materials were dropped off on July 16th.
He did not put down anything to catch the shingles they tore off. My flowers were crushed, nails and debris were everywhere making it hard for my dogs and kids to go outside. They didn’t even attempt to pick any of it up until the dumpster was delivered. Their ‘experienced team’ was him, his wife, and a teenager that was the son of a family friend. There might have been one more man that worked, but the main team was those three.
I knew my roof was in bad shape, hence the reason I needed it replaced. As Jody worked, he would send me photos of the damage he was finding under the shingles. He seemed great with communication and given my limited knowledge, he seemed to know what he was talking about.
The job was supposed to take a week, and it took over two. In that time, it had rained multiple times and I had to ask him to come cover the exposed roof because it was leaking. He claimed they were mostly finished around the end of July, and just needed to come finish putting up the fascia that he said needed replaced.
He never did. I got excuse after excuse of why he just couldn’t make it to finish the job. The fascia boards were part of the contract, but there was always car trouble or a sick kid or something. I tried to be understanding as I am very aware that life happens.
In October, a piece of flashing blew off and a leak started. I contacted Jody, who took did manage to come out two days later and claimed the flashing was purely decorative and the leak was caused by my chimney. He put the metal piece back, and the leak stopped. Still didn’t do anything about the fascia.
Winter comes and goes, and my heating bill is double what it usually is (heat escaping through the fascia openings?). I messaged Jody many times between the end of July and April, trying to get him to finish the job. A job he had been fully paid for.
April 1st, birds have started to nest in my roof. They are pulling out insulation and causing damage. I messaged Jody one last time, before posting a negative review (without actually saying his name or the company’s) on my FB. His wife had friended me back in July, so she saw it. Jody contacted me right away, telling me he wasn’t happy with my post. He swore he was just about to come finish the fascia when he saw it, and he no longer had any reason to since I had written something negative about his company. The post was private, and could only be seen by my friends. He swore the fascia was ‘doing me a favor’ even though it was stated in the contract.
I told him I would remove the post when the job was finished, and he told me he would “add me to the schedule” only once I took the review down.
Since then I have slapped up some boards to keep the birds out, but it looks terrible and there are large gaps underneath since he should have done the fascia before installing the drip edge. The roof is leaking again. I have had other roofing companies out to look at things, and all of them have said he did a shoddy job and recommend I get the roof completely redone.
Turns out, Jody is unlicensed. He hasn’t shown any proof of the license or insurance when asked. When consulting lawyers, those in the town of Gaylord know him by name and say he is a thief. Doing a search of court cases, Jody has been sued many times; including felony fraud. The LLC is under his wife’s name, and shortly after ‘finishing’ my roof, they opened Legacy Roofing LLC, when they had been operating under Life Rebuilt LLC prior. They also seem to have a furniture business.
Claimed loss: $16,600
Desired outcome: Refund

You got played by a scam artist. Next time, do your homework and check licenses and reviews before hiring anyone. Don't let sob stories sway you; hold these contractors accountable. Legal action is your best bet now. Document everything and take him to court. This guy thrives on leniency, so don't give him an inch. Your roof needs a real professional, not a con man.
Researching licensing isn’t exactly something that’s taught in school, or even mentioned until you get screwed over. Not to mention the LARA site isn’t super user friendly. Unfortunately, every lawyer I’ve spoken to has said we will spend more money taking him to court with very little chance that he will pay. There doesn’t appear to be any simple way of reporting him. The places I can report him want 6 pages of information filed out along with copies of everything. I’m in the process, but it is time consuming. It’s not a question of leniency in this case, but more of the time consuming process of researching where to report and filing everything out. Until something can be done by a higher power, posting warnings is the most I can currently do.
