unauthorized charges / harassment
Was a member for about 20 months. First year was good. Therapists knew what they were doing, I was able to get the same therapist virtually every visit and all were kind and easy to get along with. Not sure what changed, but starting in about September 2010 most everything with the joint went downhill. Never could get the same therapist, appointments got harder to book, and reception staff became quite rude. Finally, I was so disappointed with the service, I cancelled my contract in February 2011 (you can cancel anytime after one year). Had a bit of an argument with the reception folks over how long I had to use my prepaid massages. Finally decided I did not care and did not want them. All agreed and the account was cancelled (conveniently (and thankfully), I also closed the Visa account I was using for their monthly charge around the same time). Heard nothing for about six weeks, but then a past due notice on my account came in the mail. Called them to get resolved and it was a game of hot potato. Talked to all the front desk folks, but never a "manager". To this date, I have never received a call back from the manager. I have mailed their past due notice back to them, but my next stop will be the BBB if they come back with any more PD notices on my account. Overall, I would recommend staying away from this business, as it seems they cannot keep qualified personnel for any extended period of time. Maybe they grew too fast or something, but in any case they are no longer providing a quality service (unless you consider a high school dropout fresh out of some "massage licensing school" - whatever that might be - capable of providing quality massage services).

membership charges
BBB Complaint Filed against :
Massage Envy– Valencia #0636
23957 Newhall Ranch Road
Valencia, CA 91354
I properly canceled my membership in 2009 due to a move that resulted in no ME within 50 miles. According to ME rules, I brought a letter of cancelation into the clinic before the move and mailed in my first utility bill as soon as we received it one month later. I called the clinic and spoke with a gentleman that stated they had received the utility bill and that I was all set, the membership would be canceled. At that time I had become very ill and my husband took over the finances. Last month (Feb 2011) my husband had me look at the credit card bill and we discovered that ME had reinstated the charges to my card and had overcharged me by 11 months (April 2010-Feb, 2011)! The clinic and corporate having been giving me the run-around and have recently basically told me to go pound sand! I have sent them documentation proof of the proper cancelation. These charges are fraudulent and need to be reimbursed. My experience leads me to believe that THIS IS A DISHONEST COMPANY and I warn everyone to not sign up for a membership and never ever give this company your credit card number!
Resolution Sought: Reimbursement of the $413 fraudulent charges on my credit card(the credit card company was able to reimburse 4 months worth.)

unfair practices in rates
BAIT AND SWITCH! That's my experience. I travel for business and thought it would be nice to get a massage. I called the facility in Cordelia, CA and made my appt for Saturday, March 5th at 3pm. I was quoted a rate of $74 for a 90 min. massage.
Imagine my HORROR when I was actually charged $114 because I mentioned at the counter that I had been a member more than 6 yrs ago in another state! The gentlemen at the counter explained I had to be charged at the non-member rate even though there was nothing even posted to show this new rate. He further explained that who ever gave me the rate must have misquoted the rate...even though it was HIM.
Talk about taking away the relaxation of a massage! Unfortunately, no one seemed to want to help me resolve this situation so I will be contacting the BBB and the massage licensing board for California to file my complaint since I was unable to get a name of an administrator for this facility.

unethical business practices
I am currently an employee of ME. I am also trying very hard to find emploment else where. I have been a practicing massage therapist for 11 years now and if this is was is out there for the rest of our community, then I am truely sorry. I taught at a massage school for two years and encourage my student to apply at ME, but now that I am there myself- I...

I made the mistake of signing up for the 6 month Massage Envy membership. I have now reached month 7 and they are still charging me. When I called they told me once the 6 months ended, I am put on a month to month charge. In order to stop the charges I have to go to the place and fill out a form to have the charges stopped. I am extemely disappointed with their services...after being charged for 7 months I have only used 2 massages. And to top it off, they are telling me that if I cancel I will only have another month to use all 5 I have already paid for. Don't get suckered in to their gimmick!
I agree and will never use massage envy after having a similiar experience. Many of my friends have cancelled their memberships as well.

That's a pretty typical contract agreement - sign up for a special deal short term and have the cost continue at a regular rate when that has been completed. Also pretty typical to only have to the end of your last billing cycle to use up any credits you obtained during your contract. I agree with Wayman - it is up to you to read the contracts you sign and ensure you understand how billing will work.
I know this is a novel thought but It's called "Read what you sign". You only have yourself to blame, not Massage Envy.

over charge
Last September of 2010, I added my husband on my account as a family member for $49 with one year contract. Last january 2011, I noticed my bank account that they have been taking $60 instead of $49 as per the contract. I called a week before my appointment on January 13 and told them that they have been overcharging me since September 2010. They told me...

Massage Envy hires unlicences therapists and represents them as Nationally Certified. Therapist are working and uninsured for long periods of time. Its illegal in the state of Va to work in ANY medical field without passing the Board, even as an "apprentiship" your only allowed 6months...there are people working unlicenced for more then 2years.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
This is not true Massage Envy has to uphold not only State regulations but Massage Envy compliance. All Massage Therapists have to licensed and their licenses have to be displayed in the facility. They all have to carry professional liability insurance with Massage Envy as an additional insured. As a company they do an operations standards review quarterly to make sure all of the locations are in compliance with the laws and with the company. Some states you do not have to be licensed in Pennsylvania being one of them.
mislead and ripped-off
After succesfully fufilling my contract obligations I decided not to contiune my membership with Massage Envy. Much to my surprise almost a year later, I noticed that the monthly memebership fee of $59/ month was again being automatically withdrawn from my account. This had been occuring for the past five months and shame on me for not noticing. I just assumed a friendly call to Massage Envy would remedy the problem. Afterall, services had not been rendered. Boy was I wrong. Regardless, that I was no longer under any contractual oblication a refund was refused. Instead, the manager insisted she was doing me a favor gaving me 60 days to use the 5 massages I had paid. This is unexceptable and a total ripoff. BEWARE!
I had a three month contract, which eventually expired. They kept sending me emails saying I had "prepaids" to use. Then when I used them, they have retro charged me 9 mo of monthly membership fees!
billing my credit card for someone else's contract
I stopped in to a massage envy one day to inquire. While there I purchased a one time massage for a friend as a gift and paid for it with my credit card. My friend showed up for his massage on time and my credit card was billed for it. The problem I have is while he was there they sneakily talked him into a one year contract where he would receive a message once a month if he scheduled an appointment. The way I found this out was the charge the next month on my credit card for the message that was not scheduled or authorized by me. When I called to find out why my credit card was billed for another message I was told because you signed up for a one year contract. When I explained to her that I key word being I didn't sign up for anything and didn't authorize the charge on my credit card, she replied by saying well we can credit your account IF you give us your friends credit card to transfer over the charge. So when I explained to her that that is unacceptable that I wanted to speak with the supervisor she tells me the supervisor is not in today. I tell her my account has been sent into overdraft due to this charge that I did not authorize and I want a number to a corporate office since the supervisor is not available. She tells me there isn't one that I have to deal with each office independently. So I did my own research and currently have a phone number to the corporate office and am awaiting the office to open! I will be speaking with someone in corporate TODAY not tomorrow or whenever they decide they want to get back with me. How is it that Massage Envy is allowed to take advantage of a potential customer by charging there credit card for someone else's massages that they haven't even had yet and there name is not on the card and then try to tell you it's ok. Sounds like unprofessional, wishwashy business practice to me...along with the many other complaints you'll find about this company!
@molliewollie, once I thought about it...how is that even relevant to the complaint that they used my credit card without my authorization and billed me for someone else's contract that THEY signed, not me. UPDATE: I contacted the corporate office and spoke with the regional manager who contacted the field manager who contacted the manager of that particular store...here's how it ends...the store manager called me and apologized, stated she is reversing the charges, removing my credit card from the files and if I have any problems with the bank in regards to overdraft fees to have them call her! A very professional and correct solution to my problem. THANK YOU MASSAGE ENVY!
That's a good question. He says they didn't explain the details of the contract, that he would be billed every month for a massage, he thought it was just trying out a one year once a month massage that he would call and schedule each month. I believe him due to the fact that he said "they didn't ask me for any credit card numbers or anything that is why i thought it was a pay as i scheduled contract". He didn't realize they were just planning on using mine withouth my authorization.

thievery
I recently found a Massage Envy gift certificate purchased by my son as a Christmas Gift, tucked away in a file folder in my office filing cabinet. I was surprised when I noticed an expiration date. Mmmm? I called our local Massage Envy in Columbia, MO and learned that since there has been a computer system change the gift certificate would not be honored. I offered to buy a second massage if they would accept my the gift certificate. This fell on deft ears as well.
I am angry for several reasons. One reason that I am angry is that my son's thoughtfulness toward his father has been sabotaged by a company's fine print policy of expiration dates on a paid for gift certificate. He barely makes $10.00 an hour and pays his own rent, car payment and so forth out of his meager earnings. Another reason is that it is morally unacceptable when a company withholds goods or services that have been paid for and proof of purchase is rendered.
I understand that Massage Envy no longer sells gift certificates with expiration dates. The sad fact is you never should have done so. They should be forced to render services purchased -- no matter what their computer system.

sexual harassment
I am a member of the massage envy program, and in November, the therapist planted a kiss right on my mouth. I complained to the manager, telling her that I wanted out of my membership, and she basically told me "too bad, get an attorney or just get a female therapist from now until your contract ends". I have contacted an attorney, we'll see what happens...

Oh. My. God. Are you people so insipient that you can't comprehend the fact that you just might need to take the time to read what they put in front of you? Even if you don't take the time when you're signing it for whatever reason, maybe your children are stuck inside a burning building who can truly say, you could take the time to skim over it once you get home and you just might notice (if you use all of your 16 brain cells) that you have 3 days within your inital term to cancel, no questions asked.
Stop blaming the company! Look at it this way, this product has helped so many people, myself included, but a few of their hundreds of thousands of clients couldn't be bothered to do what should be common sense and now they're trying their hardest to give it a bad name! Don't you have anything better to do with your time?
I understand when the therapist has done something wrong but most of this nonsense could've been easily avoided. It's things like this that make you understand why America is so far behind intellectually compared to the rest of the world. Instead of whining, how's about you become a bit more literate? You just might save yourself from making the same mistake again.

No one wants to be responsible for anything. We live in an "I want it now" society and contracts are made and forgotten in a matter of seconds.
So call Coach and work it out with them! What is the matter with you?
misleading contract info
Member at Massage Envy for over 1 year I completed my contract and have maintained my membership month-to-month for an additional 6 months. I have accumulated 5 massages but I am unable to use them because I failed to give them a 30 day notice of cancellation. So in order to use any of the services that I have already purchased I am required to pay an additional 49.00 for the last month. None of this is explained to you when you sign up -- same for the cancellation policy -- additionally you cannot give your massages away to family members and they also pressure you to tip a minimum of 15-25 dollars per massage. In doing so you really do not have a "bargain". I can get a 60.00 massage at my health club. THIS IS A BAD DEAL altogether. I have submitted a complaint with FTC and will continue to let people know of this bad business policy.

Something that was paid for during membership
poor business practice/illegal
The front desk staff informed me after my massage of this law:
5-522. PERSONS UNDER EIGHTEEN PROHIBITED FROM PREMISES. No licensee shall
perform any massage therapy for or permit any massage therapy to be provided to
any person under the age of eighteen (18) years of age unless accompanied by a
parent or legal guardian.
(Ord. 2204, Sec. II, 2009)
It is a confusing law and I am not sure how to interpret it in my case. I've taken my daughter with me repeatedly and today AFTER my massage and allowing her sit up front they tell me children under 18 are not allowed on the premises. The law states that in the title, but then reads in detail that it is regarding massage and even that's okay with parental consent. After reading into it, it seems to me like with parental consent and accompaniment, as in she was in the room with me as usual, it would be fine. Either way they should have informed me of this LAW BEFORE my massage NOT after when I am supposed to be enjoying a peaceful state. I am so disappointed because I feel there is nothing more I can do but post this, find someone to interpret the law for me and never go back.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I'm a Massage Therapist that has worked for several ME here in Georgia and as far as i know as long as a parent signs the parental consent form and is with their child which is under 18 then they CAN have massage service. It sounds to me that the MT didn't want to massage a minor.
scam on gift cards
I had purchased two giftcards in December 2009 for an hour massage each. I also paid tips: included in the gift cards. One of my friend used her card in a month; other has tried to use it last week. Massage Envy told her that the card has already been used in another location in June; and they charged her credit card. I'm very upset that there is an obvious scam and they are saying "our records are showing that it's been used!". I asked them to show me the gift card already been used in June; they said they are not keeping used gift cards; simply throwing away. There are two options: my friend is trying to fool them (she desperately needs that second free massage!) OR there is an INTERNAL SCAM but it's not worth to put an effort to find out! So every gift card is in danger (especially if tip is paid!): those can be used in another location by ghosts !
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
The same thing happened to me, my friend bought me a massage envy gift card with gratuity and everything included, when I went to have my massage I handed them my gift card to pay before the service and they said “we’ll check out at the end.” Once I had already had the massage and went to pay they said I had used up the gift card in Wisconsin and California last month. I said I hadn’t been to either of those states. They argued with me, and charged my credit card (which they require you to give them at the time you make an appointment). I stayed polite and calm but later that night opened a dispute with my credit card company. When massage envy saw my credit card company had suspended the funds from them, I received a text message from massage envy accusing me of theft, saying they knew where I lived and they would call the police. It also said they have me on camera and they would prosecute if I didn’t return the funds, it concluded with “many others have tried this and failed. We know you’ve pulled this stunt before. Good luck!” What?! It was so crazy I couldn’t believe what I was reading! I told my credit card company about the threatening text message and they said merchants who are running a scam will often do that to scare the person so that they back down in the dispute. But, as it turned out I lost the dispute, since the incident involved me claiming a gift card had more money on it than they claim it did, it’s simply my word against theirs. They are experts and know what they are doing with this one! My credit card company told me gift card scams are a big thing right now because gift cards are not traceable. I don’t know how they can do this in good conscience. They are basically making double on every gift card purchase, my friend paid them for the card, then I paid them again for the service. Terrible.
complaining about complainers
I don't really see why all you people are complaining about Massage Envy. Maybe if you would have ACTUALLY read your contracts you would understand policies and procedures. My advice to you is to read something before you sign it.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Youre wrong. Theres contracts. and then theres unethical borderline illegal contracts. Just because some people are less educated doesnt mean its right ot take advantage of that, especially when trusting people just take their verbal word for it and sign the dotted line. This contract is not mutually beneficial, it strongly favors the business not the individual, leaving no recourse for someone wanting to end their membership.
Theres is such a thing as good customer service. Being a MEMBER shouldnt mean being trapped in a binding contract that zaps your funds even long after you want it to stop! Thousands of thousands of people are complaining, yes we all are so irresponsible that we all didnt read our contract and now are complaining. Well guess what, maybe theres more to it than we signed so we must obey. Its called common descency, good customer service, something we all expect. We are always trying to blame others huh? well what about massage envy blaming thousands upon thousands of people for being stupid and signing up for their scam instead of just taking responsibility for being corrupt and unethical. Your a fool.
CONTRACTS CAN BE BROKEN. JUST BECAUSE YOU SIGNED ONE DOESNT MEAN IT IS ENFORCEABLE, LEGAL, LEGITIMATE, AND ETHICAL OR WOULD HOLD UP IN COURT. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO FILE A SMALL CLAIMS LAWSUIT, YOU WILL WIN! LOOK UP "CONTRACT OF ADHESION" THE JUDGE ALMOST ALWAYS FAVORS THE PLAINTIF NOT THE UNETHICAL STRONG ARM TACTICS OF THE BUSINESS.
I did read my contract. I gave them 30 days written notice almost 2 years AFTER the initial lock in period. Both in the written notice and over the phone I told them I had not used any services not paid for and my membership dues were up to date so there was no monies owed. They still charged me for another month because I did not use their form to provide written notice.
If you read all the complaints, you will see that they all have something in common. They are always told lies by the employees. Agreed, they didn't go through their contract with a fine toothed comb before signing, but who does? They should expect not to be lied to...bad business by Massage Envy practice and it shows with all their complaints. It's nice that the word gets out with the internet.
the reason they complain even though they have signed a contract is because no one wants to accept responsibility for their own actions anymore. everyone is always trying to blame someone else.
bad customer service
I was booked an appointment with Sara. She was really rude on the phone and was talking to someone else while she was on the phone with me. I find that very unprofessional and I felt like she didn't care about the customer. I booked a deep tissue massage with trigger point. She said she had me booked for a deep tissue with trigger point. I worked at Massage Envy at the front desk for 6 months, and I can say that Massage Envy is a horrible place - at least at my location. The owner was a complete and total ### and while there were quite a few great therapists, there were some that clearly hated their job, which really reflected in the quality of their massages (I know this since the clients would bring it up to me and the other receptionists after their session).
As a "receptionist/sales associate" I was pushed and pushed and pushed to sell memberships. It didn't matter what it took or what I was comfortable with. This was my first (and only) sales job and sometimes I would come home crying because the owner and managers made me do whatever it took to get people to sign up. They even made me change my hair. I was only 19 at the time and they wanted to make me "look older" so people would take me more seriously. Are you kidding me? Give me a break, it's a crappy massage chain. When I sold a membership I was praised like a puppy. I hated it. I also had to listen to a lot of the therapists talk crap about their clients after they left or while they were dressing or undressing. They would say mean things about the way they looked, mostly. I feel so bad for anybody who has a membership there. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere where they care about YOU and your well being.

I am so sick and tired, and i mean sick now with dealing with massage envy of commack. I believe they added to my angina attack. I never had heart problems until i took up with this despicable company. They still have over 500.00 from me and after over 90 days i still can't get it back. They didn't cancel me when i canceled, didn't stop using my credit card unit i closed it out and reopened another, i called the dispute section of my credit card to help get some money back which they did. How does a company still stay in business like this. The therapist are fine and no complaints about them. its the owner, district agent, keeps on telling me she sent the money to my old account turn out she lied about that the number were to my debit account to another bank. They never received anything either. I've been lied too, cheated out of my time and money and my credit cards were used when there were told not too. What do i do now. How do i get my money back. How do i stop stressing over this before it kills me.
my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.
If you would like a great massage from therapist that truly LOVE their work and the owners treat ALL the employees with respect and true appreciation try Massage Heights. They are a great franchise that is consistent from location to location. Their spa like atmosphere and upscale linens and tables made me feel like I was in a 5 star resort.
