03/02/2023 1630 Plymouth Store
My Grandfather and I were shopping for and few items in the local Plymouth store and we had also purchased or were attempting to purchase some cider and beer while we were there.
We arrived at the self service check out and scanned everything in and naturally a member of staff came to approve the transaction as alcohol was involved. She then proceeded to ID me, I showed her my Driving Licence and I was completely unaware that my licence was out of date by two days. Obviously not realising, I checked the document myself and it was indeed out of date so the lady said she could not serve me with this ID so my Grandfather said he would purchase the items (he is 84) and apparently this was not allowed either. I had other credit cards in my name which would have matched my ID but she was having none of it.
We then asked to see the manager to see if anything could be done. We were then approached by a very scruffy man who's cloths looked like they hadn't been washed in days who was supposedly the manager (he had no name tag on either). We then proceeded to try and explain the situation and this "manager" instead of trying to calm the situation down decided to make sarcastic and rude comments towards us.
Needless to say this did not go down well and simply made myself and my Grandfather quite angry. If he had simply apologised and offered to park the transaction while I could run home to get another form of ID that would have been fine but obviously this was not the direction he took. We tried to say that as I am 27 years old and my driving licence albeit out-of - date it still had my DOB on it and I had matching cards in my name to support that. This is all we were trying to get across and that a bit of common sense take place. The Manager then proceeded to try and tell me that there is no such thing as common sense in his sarcastic tone which only made matters worse.
I then asked this manager if he could park this transaction while we went home and we got a long, quite frankly nonsense answer as to why he couldn't do that. He then said (which was the cherry on the cake) and I quote "if you're in the military you should know how to behave". In the end we ended up walking out of the store as I had to tell this manager to stop talking as he was seriously starting to annoy me at this point.
I completely accept that my licence was out of date and rules are rules that the store is obliged to follow, however the way that this manager spoke to us was absolutely outrageous, he had no customer service skills whatsoever. He was extremely rude and sarcastic and only escalated the situation.

Desired outcome: This manager is strongly in need of a review. He should also be sent on a customer relations course. I would then like a full apology to myself and my Grandfather, we were treated with no respect at all!
