M&T Bank unlawful overdraft fees

In the last two weeks M & T Bank took out insufficient fund fees from my acount at least eight times. I have repeatedly had to email them with their mistakes, but only received three of the fees back as they called it a "Courtesy". Sorry, but it was their mistake and not a courtesy. This bank really is horrible. The fees against my account were taken when clearly there was a positive amount in the account. It only became negative when they incorrectly placed INF's on my account. I am already looking for another bank.
Also, the online banking is a joke. The companies i pay through this system complain that they are not receiving the checks two weeks after i have them taken out.
All former Provident bank customers...Find another bank to handle your affairs because this one is a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Then again I guess the customers have to help them fund the Ravens.

M&T Bank cannot cash government checks

I have an account with M&T Bank in Virginia, well lets say I will not for long.

I am drawing Disability, and retired at early retirement.

I along with many others cannot cash a government chect with provident, I deposited a check from the government this past week, as well and could not dray on the check until Today, 10/14/09

I went to cask my monthly check for my disability today, and was told i could not cash it as they had to wait till the check cleared.

what a joke, I can go to wal Mart and cash it for 3 dollars, or go to another bank and cash it for nothing, but not at M&T bank, what a joke this bank is.

When this was Provident bank they received 151-m from the feds as a bail out, but they did not need the money, but they took it anyway, we the American tax payers paid for this bail out, and they take the money not needing it, was this to fund their lavish life styles., and party town usa.

Isn't it starnge that the very people, the Government that bails out these banks, their check are not considered good, and a hold is placed on the check, where does this stop, better yet who is going to step up and put as stop to this type of banking.

The Worst Bank Ever! I love Provident but when they switched to M&T BAnk, they took a 400 dollar check, credited me with 100 dollars at the atm, then took a week to credit my account. by then it was too late, i was hit with 8 over draft fees for 37$ each. Even on the simplest items while waiting on them. Next i get the run around because nobody wants to give me my money back. Now im getting charged 10$ a week until i pay them back. I work 9 to 5 and get paid on mondays, why does your bank close at 3pm, what happened to 4 or 5. I would have cashed my checks inside. Okay take my money, im down 600$ because of your sorry [censor] business practices. Account # [protected] is now closed!

Since M&T took over Provident bank I have lost over $1000.00 in NSF fees. Some of the checks were for a few dollars. When I deposited cash my reciept was never negative. Then the bank started using cute little cards in the mail to advise you of an overdraft, not an envelope that would get your attention. The people on the phone at M&T are not very helpful and when I went to the bank it was worse.CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNTS with these people. These fees are EXCESSIVE!

M&T Bank has charged my account $1, 339.00 in NSF fees since they took over Provident Banks in May of this year. $703.00 in fees within the last 30 days. My checking account balance was never negative during this time. Some of the $37 were on debit purchases for less than $10.

M&T Banks are ruthless & sleezy in thier enforcement of overdraft fees.
I think they should be audited.

I know they are ripping of thier own customers.

I myself have contributed over $1000 in fees in two months. These were minor miscalcs that with any other organization it would have been taken care of. Not these sleeze bags

I am looking to file a complaint with anyone who got NSF fees when there were no overdrafts on my balance. I always had a balance of at least $40 in the account until they posted trumped up NSF fees. I had $108.00 on the the 24 of Dec and the next day got a $18 NSF fee and no debits took place between the 24 and the 24th, how does one get NSF get charged for making a deposit of $61 with a $47 balance before the deposit?

M&T BAnk the worst institution in the world. They are ruthless crooks. They have a smartazz answer for everything and don't care about thier own customers. The over draft fees should be considered criminal. They took over $1000 in 2 months from my acct without telling me or stopping me from using my card for $1.00 purchases even after I asked them to not allow the card to work if there is no money in my acct. Sleezebags all of them. Binghamton NY

I have been charged over $2, 000 from M&T Bank. I filed complaints with the Federal Reserve and the BBB, wrote to my Congressman, and nothing was done. I am now about to lose my home and have 3 small children that will be homeless.

Yes, I have suffered over $2, 000 in ISF fees over the past year. I am a senior at Penn State and barely have enough to buy food, let alone, pay $37 for a .60 cent bagel I bough at a local coffee shop. I have caught them rearranging the order and timing of several purchases so that a one dollar overdraft purchase ends up being three IFS fees of $37 each. In continuation, I have found that if you file a complaint with your home branch about some ISF fees, how much money (if any) that is refunded to your account is subjective to that persons mood that day. It is a crime and something needs to be done.

M&T Bank nsf fees

I used my Visa Check card in Florida for single day rental. The agency charged my bank card $250 deposit for this $45 rental, but I didn't realize this. Returned from the trip and saw a negative balance, but to charges for that period yet. Immediately Deposited enough money to bring the account positive and then some. That evening, saw charges post, but no overdraft fees. Deposited more money to go positive again. The next day, 12 NSF fees hit. Beth at White Marsh branch refused to help though she simpithized.

It was very frustrating to hear a commercial later that evening from M&T Bank stating, "Knowing what's important"...yeah.. important that they hit you with as many fees as possible to generate income!

Today and another occassion I had problems with M&T bank also. I have $296. in NSF fees being charged on my account! They are robbing me! I am a single mother with 3 children to feed! Similar scenarios occurred with me whereas...a check came in AFTER my CARD transactions were in pending and they take the LARGEST amount for a better chance to rob their clients. This is a M&T GET rich scam. On one date, there are "pending" (card) transactions...on next date a "check" which the Customer Service Rep advised was in "pending" but did not appear on my online statement. The next day beginning with the largest check of $450. created $296. in NSF fees. I cannot pay my bills this month thanks to M&T. I am closing this account and extrememly dissatified with their banking practises. Like I said before and the CRS agreed they and 1 other bank use this practise of beginning with the largest transaction amount and NOT as transactions are processed. Please do not use this bank. Or you will be next.

M&T Bank m&t online banking balance not matching up?

I balance my husband's and my checkbook every day on an excel sheet that automatically adds and subtracts whatever deposits or debits/withdrawals I make. At the end of every month, I print out the statement from M&T online banking and compare it to my register, highlighting every single transaction as I go along, just so I'm sure I haven't missed one on the page. Well, ever single month, I somehow have at least $80 which are unaccounted for. Yes, going through the printout I usually find one or two transactions I've missed, but they're usually a trip to McDonald's or something. So, I add that discrepancy to my register, so I can be sure that the next month, I am beginning with the correct balance.

So how is it that every month, I still have these discrepancies that I cannot account for, even by going back months in my online statements? I looked on my account this morning--when, according to my excel sheet, I expected to have about $120--and I had a balance of $0 and M&T had transfered about $35 from my overdraft protection! I consider myself an extremely organized person when it comes to banking: I keep absolutely every receipt, I know when every one of our bills is due, and like I said, I balance our checkbook every day, since it's right on my computer desktop. Is M&T stealing from me? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Where are these hundreds of dollars going that I can't account for? I'd like to switch to another bank, but everyone I know seems to think that M&T is the best, so who else can I trust if I am not sure I can trust M&T?

M&T Bank legit fees!?!?!?!?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT IS LEGAL FOR M&T BANK TO CONTINUE TO CREATE DEBT FOR YOU. I RECIEVED 17 OVERDRAFT CHARGES AT $37 A PEICE THAT COMES TO $629. THATS ALMOST A MORTGAGE PAYMENT. THAT ALSO MEANS AT ONE POINT I PAYED $40 FOR A PACK OF CIGARETTES, UNBELEIVABLE. THIS HAPPEND RIGHT AROUND 5/25/09, EVEN AFTER I DEPOSITED $1000 THAT DAY AND MY BALANCE SHOWED $1450 TO THE POSSITIVE...NEXT DAY TUESDAY, STILL EVERYTHING IS GOOD ALL POSSITIVE ALL OF A SUDDEN WEDNESDAY AND I AM GETTING NAILEED WITH ALL THESE OVERDRAFT CHARGES...BAM, BAM6, FOR MON, BAM 6 FOR TUES, BAM 5 MORE WED...HELL HAD I KNOWN THIS I DEFINATELY WOULD NOT HAVE USE MY CARD...IT SHOWED POSS THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN NSF, NSF, $37 CHARGES THROUGHOUT...THAT IS NOT FAIR BUSINESS PRACTICE. I DO THINK THEY CONTINUE TO COVER EVERYTHING EVEN IF ITS .15 CENTS SO THEY CAN GET THEIR INSUFFICIANT FUNDS FEE, THEY ARE QUICK TO TAKE AND THEY HELPED VERY LITTLE ON GETTING IT BACK...THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF LAW AGAINST CREATING DEBT FOR SOMEONE ELSE...I DO APPRECIATE WHAT HELP I AM BEING OFFERED BUT i AM NOT WORKING AND HAVE NO MORE MONEY COMING IN. THEY SAY THEY WILL GIVE ME 3 BACK IF I PUT IT INTO A SAVINGS ACCOUNT..OK THATS GREAT, I LIKE THAT...BUT HOW ABOUT SPLITTING THE REST WITH ME SO I CAN PAY A FEW BILLS...ALSO TO BOOT, I NOT ONLY DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY AND AM UNEMPLOYED. BUT MY DOG NEEDS TO GO TO THE VET WHICH WILL COST ME $600 ITSELF...WE ALL KNOW VETS DONT TAKE THE PAYMENT PLAN, SO WHAT DO I DO KNOW...I NEED SOME RESOLUTION, HELP!?!.

Hello,
I would say to cal their customer service and tell them that same thing. Tell them your accout said you were in the positive and you were under the impression. If you can provide good details you could probably get some of the ISF charges taken away. Also if you are over the age of 50 of 55 you can apply for a senior citizens checking (at least at my bank). This provides some over draft protection ( you will have to inquire about the details). If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at duane@abllpcpa.com.

I am experiencing the same problem regarding M&T Bank and the slow processing of credit payments and the very fast processing of debits that results in NSF letters when in fact there are sufficient fees all along. Let's face it we know that computers will onbly do what people program them to do. M&T Bank needs aeither a policy or a personnel change to rectify this form of robbery.

I %100 agree with you man, there so called "web banking" is a JOKE! They promote it like it helps you manage you account but the information is so conflicting that it does nothing but set you up for NSF fee. Unless you have money to burn M&T bank is not the bank for you. It is not the bank for the working american that has to worrie about bills and prays everyday that nothing pops up and needs to be paid because you already stretched thin with you money. On top of the NSF fees the costomer service is not up to par as they so elequently promote. I could go on for days about my incounters with M&tbank but I think venting will do just fine.

M&T Bank poor customer service and business practices

Went into M&T bank on a Friday morning with a balance of -$22.00 (including an overdraft fee). Rep explained the fee to me, seemed legit (as legitimate as a $37 fee can be anyway). I asked her "If I make a deposit today, will there be any further overdraft fees on my account?" To which she responded (after checking a few things on her computer) "No, you will be fine if you make a deposit now, just make sure it is cash so it will clear in time." I thanked her, and immediately made a deposit of $260 (as further confirmation, the teller made sure that I was aware my account was overdrawn, I replied "yes I'm aware, the customer service rep told me that if I make a deposit now there won't be any further fees", to which she responded "thats a good idea"). I checked my balance online Saturday evening and noticed that there was an additional $37 overdraft fee.
I stopped by the bank again on Monday morning and talked to the exact same representative, explaining that I was in on Friday inquiring about an overdraft fee, and she admitted that she recognized me. After reminding her of our conversation, she seemed confused and responded: "hmm... I wouldn't have said that, because there was still another fee pending..." She then asks me if I would like the fee waived, I replied yes. She verifies my phone number, and says she will call me.
I receive a call about an hour later, she states that this bank location can't waive overdraft fees for me and I will have to call the Airport Plaza location where I opened the account. I call here, explaining the situation to another rep, who tells me a manager will call me back. The manager at the Airport plaza branch calls back and informs me that despite the other rep making a "bank error" they will not waive the fee, because they had waived fees earlier that year. I told her that I did not feel this was pertinent to the situation at hand and explained that I felt I was lied to, and suggested she contact the other rep herself to clear things up, she agreed to do so.
The manager again calls back and tells me that the other rep has no recollection of our conversation at all (odd considering she told me she recognized me at first). She then proceeds to berate me like a child, telling me that ultimately I am responsible for keeping track of my own funds and that they would waive the fee this time as a courtesy, but no future overdraft fees would be waived, to which I responded that ultimately it is the bank's responsibility to stand behind its employees and take responsibility when they give out false information to their customers - she responded again that she was not part of this conversation, and that the other rep had no recollection of it either. So rather than the apology that I should I have received for being lied to I was instead talked down to by the manager of the bank. Needless to say I'm closing my account this week.

Hi,
I know with M&T they require a certain amount of funds to hold within your checking account, i.e., if your balance is less than $500 per month, and for the 'select checking', those hideous fees will be added that includes surcharges, over-draft fees, anything under the sun. Your best bet is to look around a local bank in Buffalo, one that has a reputation of catering to their customers...like First Niagara or any that holds a local chain. I'm becoming leary with M&T since they bought out a local chain (Partners Trust) and I had no problems with their policies, and I have kept a minimum of $25.00 in my checking with NO PROBLEM. Once these corporate banks start to buy out and take over these mom and pop banks, everything is run by greed and no respect.

M&T Bank service fees

I changed jobs and no longer had direct deposit. I called M&T to ask if I need to change my account type, and they said as long as I kept $2500 in my checking and linked accounts I would received no service charges. The next month, I received a $5.95 service charge. I called and they said that I had to keep $1500 in THAT account and $2500 total, but they did reverse the charge and change my account type.

The next month I got charged two fees of $2.95 each because I had enrolled in (but never used) web bill pay. There is no way to unenroll without contacting M&T directly. The reason I got charged TWO fees for ONE account is because I had enrolled under my user name online and my husband's. BUT IT IS STILL JUST ONE ACCOUNT! It is a joint account, but I can't unenroll the account, just myself. Now he has to call and cancel his enrollment for the same account.

I USED TO have my mortgage through them (notice past tense). I would send extra principal payments of $50 or $100, and they misapplied them on 2 or 3 times in a 4-year period. Two specific ones I remember are a $100 payment I made and they reversed (even though it cleared my checking account)--I called them about it and they "fixed it" by crediting it a week later. The second was a $50 payment that was "applied", but it was "applied" to nothing...it showed up in the transaction detail, but didn't come off the principal. Their response was always "I don't know why that happened".

M&T Bank hidden costs of m&t free checking

After openning a free checking online in Aug 2008 I realized that contrary to free billpay service that I had in
4 other banks there is fee for billpay at M&T, so I cancelled my billpay subscription online via bank secured e-mail.On 2/21/2009 I received the only paper statement from M&T Bank showing my checking account been closed due to -$6.35 cumulative billpay fee and sent to collection.
I spent more than an hour on 2/24/2009 with different departments of M&T bank trying to resolve the bank error, each representative shown gross incompetent handling the matter end referred me to another phone to call and the last one suggested I send a letter to bank as nothing anyof them could do about it.
So here is the deal if you intend to open a free checking account with M&T Bank:
1.There is a fee for billpay so it is not free.
2. Afterward if you need to resolve an issue you have to spent hours talking to assortment of ###s
at M&T bank who are experts in giving you runaround and not resolving the issue.
3, The surprised account closure without any written or phone message and sending it to collection may affect your credit reports and if you ever been unfortunate to resolve an error with credit reporting agencies you know what kind of ###s you end up talking to,

Thanks for alerting me to this ripoff.

I had a Provident Bank free checking, which was just converted to M&T "Free" Checking after they bought Provident in Virginia. According to their website, accounts opened online get FREE billpay; accounts opened at an M&T office are charged 2.95/ month after the first month. What a ripoff!

M&T Bank beware of refinancing w / m&t bank

Do yourself a favor and do not consider M&T BAnk for anything, especially refinancing. They act like they are going to get you the best deal, use an unqualified appraiser who grossly under-appraises your property so your value to loan ratio is so high and they can charge you thousands more. Nice scam for the bank, huh?

Good luck!

I heard something similar about M and T / M&T loan officers in VA and MD. A friend of mine said he was going to close all his checking accounts if they changed his costs as his mortgage contact has said some things the he believes are unethical. Of course, he wants to close, if possible at what they promised. I wish all consumers would provide their experiences re these unethical banks. It would make it easier on people who only want to survive in this economy.

Thanks for this information. We are planning to refinance but will not consider M&T. These banks should be put out of business for taking advantage of consumers in this economy.

Specifically the loan officers at M&T bank are not scruntized per say their educational background nor their credit/criminal background check. They can put a facade of professionalism, but on hindsight they know enough to take advantage of the person that is literally not qualified for a home mortage. The 'sub-prime' is still prominent, especially for low-income consumers. The local M&T bank in Elbridge, NY has one loan officer that knows how to seduce her clients/costumers, by pass all the fine print and then sneaks in extra points without their acknowledgement. Not only that is unethical...it is predatory lending.

M&T Bank scam and cheating

We have a commercial loan from M&T Bank. It's originated by Silver Hill under its subsidiary Bayview Loan Company on Sept. 2007 and Bayview sold to M&T Bank after 7 or 8 months later. The loan is for a small MHP in NC. Recently, our tenants are having problems with their jobs. Consequently, a few can not make their rent payments on time. Therefore, we are having a tough time making a mortgage for many months. However, we tried to make the payment on time and keep our credit intack for the possibility of refinancing the mortgage with low interests and low monthly payment in order to be self sufficient.

We called M&T Bank to consider the readjustment or loan modification possibility but M&T told us that we have to be on default status in order to be considered. So, we looked for another bank to refinance the mortgage. However, we found out that our payoff information from M&T Bank for refinancing our mortgage was very disturbing. Terms and early payment penalties were so severe that we do not have the chance. It turned out to be our early payment penalties were over $160, 000 (57%) on the loan amount of $279, 237 and terms were 7 years early payment penalty plus 10 years payment penalty thereafter, which we were not aware of before the contract. There is no written disclosure we can find from the file.

I spoke with many business people and loan brokers about it but they never heard such terms.

I hired a predatory lending mortgage lawyer and he tried to resolve the problem with M&T Bank directly; however, M&T Bank told him that commercial loan is norm in that terms. Basically, M&T Bank wants $160, 000 penalty if we want to refinance it or rather see the default or foreclosure on the loan.

The lawyer told me that he is not expert in commercial loan and we should consult with other commercial mortgage lawyer.

Please investigate the term predatory lending practice on these lenders. Are these terms are norm in commercial loan? Isn't there should be some kind of term restriction for commercial loans?

Hope this helps other business people be aware of their loan terms and find the right bank or financial institution for their commercial loans.

Why does M&T add a transfer fee every month ? I thought that was a one time fee, I didn't catch that in the fine print. It defeats the purpose of transfering to a lower interest card. Please help. Thank You

anyone dealing with M&T Bank should record all conversations with them even if they hang up for telling them you are recording them. I was told by on M&T Bank associate that if I tell them I was recording they would hang up because they do not allow you to record their conversations.. you will find some that will allow you to record and that should be the only time to discuss your loan.

Yep, we had a MHP loan through Bayview that was passed on to M&T within a couple of months. M&T screwed up the escrow account for property taxes and insurance more than once, and ended up using the new Frank-Dodd regulations (they said) to require us to have an 18 month reserve escrow for taxes and insurance. Somehow, our floating interest rate never lowered even after interest rates crashed.
M&T rebuffed all our asking about doing a refi. We had another bank that approached us, and we did a refi with them on a fixed rate 4 points lower than we were paying M&T. M&T held us hostage for a 1.75% penalty on the balance because we could not give them the pay off date 60 days in advance. We decided to pay rather than stick with M&T for another 2 months. We felt they would come up with another gimmick or issue to stop us from leaving without their blackmail payment.

I contacted a relative who works as the head of regional lending for another bank (top 10 in the USA) and she said that while her bank did not loan to Mobile Home Parks at all right now, the terms that M&T were using, the clauses they were citing were absurd.

We are going to send a complaint to our state Attorney General and to the federal regulators. If enough people do this, then M&T's policies can be stopped, their activities can be called to account.

Oh, and M&T said that their penalty was not in the part of the loan agreement that specified early pre-payment penalties, which we had long since passed, but in the fine print towards the end. We still can't find it.

I have a similar problem with M&T Bank in California, after 8 months of trying to get a loan modification on my residential loan Latoya Randall in loss midigation along with Collin Nutton supervisor are saying that they could not approve a modification without me going into default. They said the only way to modify my loan was to show 1-2 30 day lates otherwise they can't. UNBELIEVABLE! Why would they take my packet and make me go through an 8 month process with me being current! They should have said from the START IF YOUR CURRENT WE CANNOT HELP ! IS THERE ANY HELP OUT THERE FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE PAYING THERE MORTAGE ON TIME?

We refinanced our business with M & T Mortgage (Bayview Loan Service) in 2005. When we asked for the payoff amount of the loan last year, 9/2009, they charged us $100.00 for a payoff statement and we were shocked with a 35% prepayment penalty during a so-called lock out period. When we originally took out the loan, we had heard of suspicious 'prepayment penalties' and specifically asked our agent if this loan was subject to a prepayment clause and she said NO.

Please research this further as we are convinced of unlawful predatory lending practices by their company. If you have more similar complaints, please include ours. We spoke with our attorney, who doesn't specialize in this type of case, but he assured us that it is highly unethical.

The lending institutions received a government bailout in 2009. Shouldn't there be a government agency that oversees mortgage lenders as well?

Today we received a Class Action Lawsuit against Ameriquest for illegal lending practices on my home loan. Is there any possibility that a lawsuit of this nature could be started against M & T Bank and their affiliates?

Thank you for researching this for us and anyone else who has been a victim of this.

This is normal for a commercial loan. This is in place because the originator has investors which require a large return for their funding. When you pay off a loan early they loose on the interest they would have gained from your payments. To ensure they get their money they impose a prepayment penalty and a lock out period. Again this is standard. It should be paragraph 6, 7 or 8 on a Bayview loan. As for the loan mod, most banks do require you are past due to get asst. Not that they want you to fall behind, but if you are making your payments, you do not need help. Yes you might be struggling...but you are doing it. And you are supposed to make your payments-not turn to your mortgage company for help. They are not their to help you or save your credit. It is a business and like all businesses they want their money. Also with a commerical loan you showed proof you could make the payments with out the assistance of the property.

M&T Bank nsf

I can not belive how M&T bank can charge insufficient charge before the charge is actually posted. I go into the one local branch and the customer service tellers are nasty, rude and talk to you as if you own them more money just because. when i ask for them to explain how on black in white its show the money is in the account but they still charged me two 37.oo charges while my account still shows positive. How, why, and the response i get is " well the way the system posted it it show negitive even though it's still shows postive. Does this make any sense. The way the system works sucks and i wish we would all band together and tell all banks to go and shove their NSF where the sun don't shine! us working class don't have NSF to share with greedy banks.

There have been many times when I have had checks cleared and I was still charged NSF. When I called and asked about it, they say that there is pending withdraws against my account and this will cause the NSF. Even if I didn't do it, they are telling me that there is a back room screen that they use to decide on doing this. They say if someone is checking on an amount in my account for future purchases they will hold the money for three days and if I have a check come in and they are still waiting on this time to pass and there isn't enough money in my account to cover the three day hold and the check I will be charged. I would really like for someone to check into this. It doesn't seem very fair that they can do that with someone's money.

I too am having issues with M and T bank. My web account has all of my transactions listed and my AVAILABLE balance is at a positive. The bank calls me and says that I will have two $37.00 fees posted to my account tomorrow. For what!?!?! They explain that even though the transactions are listed, they are not taken out of the account! I am leaving M and T bank today and so are all of my sorority sisters! Bye Bye M and T!

This morning I checked my account online and found several insufficient funds fees posted on my account. The checks were posted to the account on the 21st and yet on the 22nd I was hit with these fess. When I look at though the right hand column is in the positive and shows that the money is there. I pulled my receipt that was printed from the ATM machine to make sure the amount deposited was correct. I called and customer service stated that even though the credits column reflected that the money was there it in fact wasn't. I spoke with a Pat in the Delaware office and she stated that I needed to click on the items in blue in order to understand why the charges look the way they do. Well that's great to know... after the fact. How is someone suppose to know that. I feel that is very misleading, if I look at my account and see black on the right showing that the money is there and yet my account is being hit with insufficient funds fees, there is something wrong. I also found out that it's actually two to three days for things to clear. I was informed that it takes a day to post, an additional day to process and another day to clear. That's how it was explained to me, so yet again LIES! One business day is what there literature says, but it takes three days!

I totally agree! I have had nothing but problems with M&T Bank and the only way I am going to fix that is to not do business with them anymore! I have completely had it. They so conveniently hold transactions and then decide to post them when they see that your account is getting near not enough but you deposit a check that so conveniently doesn't become available in time to cover the charges. Forget about trying to do your banking online using their Web system because that is never right. Even when they say I don't have enough money in my account it still shows the transactions as a positive so if the checks or transactions came through the way they are listed on the website then I wouldn't have any overdrafts. They are crazy!

I too have had nothing but problems with M and T Bank. I was a provident customer because I had problems with bogus fees due to convenient (for them) posting of transactions at M and T in the past. Paid their stupid fees, closed the account and started fresh at Provident. Never had even 1 single problem. Then M and T took over. An instant $105.00 in overdraft fees! I had a balance (positive) through 3 or 4 transactions. Then I needed to spend more than I had in the account so I took more than enough in cash to the branch and made a deposit. Later that day I made my online purchase. Well, They posted the purchase ahead of the cash deposit and hit me with several fees. Even for purchases made with sufficient funds at the time. I am going to head a crusade to have this bank investigated!

There is an erroneous NSF fee posted to my account. I called M&T Bank at 10am on Saturday 5/24/08. The girl who answered the phone told me the NSF fee was posted to a transaction at a mini-mart a week prior to my call. My account online showed it was posted to an ATM withdrawal 2 days prior to my call. She was confused, put me on hold, then came back on and...

M&T Bank legitimate insufficient funds!

I received insufficient funds fees on 4 transactions clearing the same day. I had enough money in the account to cover three of the transactions, however the bank decided to start with the highest transaction therefore depleting the account of funds and then charging for all 4 transactions. I understand that I am responsible to keep sufficient funds in my account, I take blame for that. But when the bank saw that they could've paid 3 of the items without depleting the account, then thats what they should have done. This is a perfect example of a self serving business. When I contacted them all they said was that is how we post things from the largest transaction to the smallest. My question again is why? They then suggested I enroll in a different checking account that has a 1500.00 minimum balance, but it has overdraft protection availability. The problem with this solution is, if someone can afford a 1500.00 min. Then they probably don't need overdraft protection. Protection should be an option for all the checking accounts. These policies are outrageous. If you ever have problems with your account steer clear of this bank. Consider a small town bank or a credit union.

I left M&T 3 years ago with the same complaint. They would put the bigger amounts through first. Their explanations were always crap. I just received a letter from them saying that they reviewed my past account and am due for a refund of bank fees. It didn't ask for anything but to verify my address so it looks legit. I am at a credit union now and have not had one problem. Love my credit union.

This bank needs to be investigated. I recently made a transfer from M &T to my paypal account by mistake ( I meant to transfer from a different bank). Luckily (or unluckily rather), it went into overdraft protection because of insufficient funds. I found out I had made this error when I received the bank statement and immediately processed full payment to the M&T account. Unfortunately, my payment was overdue and M&T took full advantage. They charged me $10 for the initial overdraft, $37 for nonpayment of $18 minimum monthly payment, another $10 for overdraft so they could take the $37 and $25 late payment. That's $82 in fees. I was okay with the initial $10 fee but the rest of it is just gouging of the customer. Is any credit card company allowed to charge $72 for nonpayment of $18? I spoke to a rep who told me that there was nothing she could do. I mentioned that, at the least, she could waive the $25 fee like other credit card companies do. At that point, she admitted that she could waive that bringing the fees down to $57. I also closed my account. I've heard horror stories from other people about being charged multiple times for the same thing as well with this bank. I've never heard of a bank treating people this ruthlessly. At a time when laws are changing with credit card companies to protect the cardholder from excessive fees, for some reason, M&T is unaffected. It is the type of company that sits and waits for you to make a mistake, and then they pounce on you instead of offering you the courtesy of a one time waiver like other banks in the past have done. An absolutely awful bank that needs to be investigated be the BBB for business practices that should be illegal.

They charge me 100 dollars in insufficient funds fees even though I have 75 dollars left in my account now. I never overdrafted anything but they still charge me for "future" possible overdraft for something that already came out of my account. They double charge for the same item if you use it as a "visa" even after it has already come out of the account. Since I used my debit card as a visa a lot this past long weekend...they got enough enough double charging to make it seem like I was in the negative even though I wasn't. They charge me three 18 dollars charges and then another 37 dollar charge today even though I am still in the positive. I have only 75 dollars left of my money because they took 100 dollars for "potential" overdrafts. I didn't deposit anymore money into the account since the fees so the fact that I still am positive is a sign of something shady. If you don't understand what I mean, then think of how I feel. It doesn't make any sense at all. I am not going to used my "visa" debit any longer this weekend and when I go into the bank next week, I can take out all my money that I have left and move it over to my other bank account that I opened up at HSBC. The only reason I had an M&T account was because they bought out all the "Citibank" accounts in Western NY. It was never a bank I wanted in the first place. I can't believe it has taken me this long to cancel it. Unless you have a lot of money in your account all the time, I would recommend never banking at M&T. You'll end up with overdrafts fees even though you didn't overdraft and have money in your account. I cannot use the bank card in Canada as "debit" so I was using it as a "visa" so that's how they get you with their double holds for one purchase.

I have been having the exact same problems with M and T bank. I am closing all of my accounts as soon as possible. Over the last year I have been charged insufficient funds fees and when I called the bank, and I also went to the bank in person, they tried to explain how their "system" works. To me they work against their customers and try to charge them as much fees as possible. I had banked with Provident for about 10 years and NEVER had these kinds of problems.

I agree with all of you. the same thing has now happened to me. my husband deposit his pay check in the bank, and we were told that because it was before 2 pm that the money was in the account, and also online banking showed it was in their and what my balance was.. so i went and paid some bills on line, got my food order and thought that everything was ok, 4 days later i get a notice in the mail saying i was charged 147. dollars nsf, when i called about this i got the run around, told how they hold a payroll check for 24hrs, to make sure that it clears because they have to send it to the bank that it is drawn on, now here is the funny thing, not knowing that my account had this done, i wrote a check and that same day they took it out, now were my check was cashed at was a different bank! funny how a different bank can get that money on the same day!

so i have cleared out that account and went to the bank that my hubby's payroll check comes from.. i have also filed a complaint with the federal reserve and also the better buisness..

I have an ebay account and made 3 payments for tiems that were all under $5. I had money in my checking account that is linked to Paypal. I did not know however that I was going to go over by a few dollars. They decided to chage me
$ 37 for insufficient fund fees, and I got a message saying that they were happy to let me know that they could pay the items for me even though I did not hav eenough to cover the cost. Why would anyone in their dam mind make somone pay $121 for three items that cost under $15 ? They just wanted to get money out. I know it was my fault that I was over by a few dollars but their fund fees are just way too much, and I do not get paid till tomorrow and they charged me an extra $10 for having a negative balance for 5 days. ugghhh. Anyone have any advice as to how I can hopfully have them waiver this? I am a college student...Atleast I know to always keep a check on my balance now. Paypal supposebly was supposed to show a status as to whether or not I would hav e anegative balance and it doesn't/didn't, I wonder why..

their fraud detection is aweful. had some one use my card and only had 1st name and no info other than that and bank let 1st transaction go thought with out any problems. but when i've stopped at the bank that same day (friday) i was given a bumb's rush and told to come back monday. and guess what on sunday i've had 3 more transactions. and its been pain proving my case, i had to do my own investigation and tell them what i've found. they've told me i have to dement insuficient funds back from those companies that posted transaction and that it is not banks fault, even though they knew about them, and refused to do anything. been checking around and here is what I've found. direct deposit should be instant and not take 24 hours. debit transactions are $.50 each. fraud detection only for international areas. quicken access is $8.99 other banks have free. check deposits don't give you instant money avail like for instance pnc gives you intimidate access up to $200. random charges for bank use and then refund that same instant, wonder if i have less will that cause overdraft.

I have had the same ### happen with me and they won't help me out! This is what I am trying to email them right now, but for some reason it won't let me send it.

I just wanted to explain my frustrations at a recent M&T bank in Chester, MD 21619. I frequently check my online account to be sure that my available balance is high enough to make a purchase or pay a bill. I never use the account when I can see that my available balance isn't high enough. Yet, somehow I am screwed into 3 (probably up to 7 by now) $37.00 insufficient funds fees. My statement clearly showed that there were funds available, but somehow even though pending charges are included, they take several days to affect my available balance, which a representative told me was immediate with pending charges. But, your company lied to me, so I assume that my available balance is correct, and I pay a couple bills and get a couple things at the store. Then 3 days later, BAM, all these expensive fees put on a college student because the banks system is messed up and will never actually tell my correct available balance. I made a deposit to cover the amount, and asked if there was anyway they could refund me the insufficient funds fees since it's your online banking system that is messed up, and the guy refused and said he couldn't. I have had this problem several times, and your bank has made well over $500 from me in the past year, due to an incorrect available balance indicator. I figure since you made that much money from me, you could be nice enough to help out a college student that's trying to get by, and instead getting screwed over by the worst banking company that exists! If you can help, please do, but otherwise I'm going to Bank of America. I am also going to write a complaint with the branch itself. It was in no way helpful, and he was lying to me to my face about the available balance.

My paycheck is direct deposited on the same day every week to M&T Bank. I looked online and it stated my pay was deposited. I walked into the bank that day and cashed a check for $20. Today they charged me $37 NSF when the money is there! This bank has charged me hundreds of dollars in the past year for that cascading crap they do when putting NSF on a check. They pull out their payment for the overdraft account, bounce that to charge the $37 and start the cascading NSF's again. I just downloaded a form from the Federal Reserve to submit a complaint. I feel like an idiot for not getting my money out sooner. I will close this account immediately. This bank should be made to refund its customers for all the money they ripped off. Someone should do an investigation. I live in Baltimore, they own the friggin' Ravens stadium and run a zillion TV ads, but have no problem outright stealing from their customers here. If anyone knows another state or federal agency to report them to please let me know.

I have had the same problems with this M&T bank. There insufficient fund policy is crazy! I recently recieved over $300 in insufficient fees for transactions that total about $50! Their creative accounting made it so the funds would not be available and then they proceeded to charge me for things like a $5 charge at McDonalds! And my thing is that there should be some kinda grace period for those that have direct deposit because they know they are going to get their money! The first chance I get I will be getting rid of this bank once and for all! Please pass the word on to stay clear of M&T Bank! They are definetly not the bank for the people!

M&T Bank unlawful foreclosure threatening!

M&T Bank is threatening to make my mortgage due and payable in 24 days, due to fraud committed by my mortgage broker. Yes, I signed the paperwork, however, at the urging of my broker, my application was finessed in certain ways. I have paid my mortgage on time and in full since I have had it. I have information that they simply can't sell my loan to their investor because they funded it at a time of mortgage implosion. Should this come down to them taking my home? Shouldn't they be going after my broker and not me? Word of advice - if you are seeking a mortgage, DO NOT use M&T Bank, and inquire with your broker to make sure.

My stepfather (a veteran, served in the marine corps) passed away december 2015, leaving my mother who passed away september 9 2016 (65 years old! primary cns lymphoma of the brain), my boyfriend and I moved into their house prior to my mom passing. my mother and I did a quit claim deed as per m & t bank (i'm 42 and permanently disabled) the bank was aware of this. they told me I could get a modification of the loan after my mother passed so they could list her as deceased and then continue with the modification no problem. unfortunately my mom passed, I filled out the paperwork and also fax over the death certificate. guess what denied and they would not list my mom as deceased, I was told to redo the paperwork again so I did (now before my credit went to crap thanks to m & t bank) I had offers from the va and a couple other places to get a loan, i'm a first time buyer disabled. the other lenders said they need to see my mom listed as deceased on the credit check, I called m & t bank and was told they r working on it. now in the mean time I have already talked with the bcap mortgage assistance. they have 50, 000 to give to m t bank towards the principal balance of the loan, I made them aware of this, they said ok note taken, they of course r still working in my modification so I thought I walk outside and guess what I found just right on the front porch, foreclosure paperwork, it says m&t bank vs my mother (deceased) in real small print at the bottom it says serve papers to me. I know my brain doesn't work to good, but did I miss something?

I live in nj want to go back to pa. just got married monday.
Anybody out there that can advise what to do? they are doing an accelerated forclosure. it goes against my mind credit how does that happen?

Thank you
Lisa

I am so tired of stupid banks that don't give a rats b about mortgage loans. They sell you off to stupid banks like M&T. This is the second time we get screwed by them. This time the shortage escrow being the problem. We made a payment of $1500 in March 10, than the rest on march 22 of $305. The guy specifically said out payment will be $612 on the next mortgage payment. Little did I know that, the $612 that went in for April was sent to principle instead cuz according to them our payment didn't adjust and we still had to pay $774 for the month of April. What kind of stupid ppl work the and then to have the bank send you foreclosure paperwork because according to them I owe $162. What kind of heartless stupid ppl do that to americans that work hard for their money to pay bills n feed their families. Geez they stress the crap out of u and ur gonna tell me, they can't even make a call or send out an email, but can send u stupid letters like that. Why do they ask for emails and all that crap and not try to talk to their clients instead before you send out stupid letters like that, freaking idiots! I'm refinance with Shell FCU. We have always been good on making our mortgage payments. This whole thing that happened is their fault and the should fix it, not me having to give them more extra money for their mistake and it's all in a recorded line!

M and t bank totally sucks:

Here's my story, I contacted them for a loan modification after the big bank bailout and I knew they would be flushed with cash (my taxpayer bailout cash). after cycling through about 3 representatives I finally agreed to complete some paperwork that they would send me... I did not receive anything and contacted them 2 weeks later, again made the same request to several representatives with poor english speaking abilities and finally after about 3 weeks of messing around received the paperwork, I signed and returned it with my financial life attached (tax, social security, credit lines etc.) they lost it!

Furious - I finally reached "evelyn" who was very nice, reassuring and apologetic but really of little help since they still had not located the paperwork. evelyn allowed me to fax the items to her and she received them while I was still on the phone and supposedly got the process in motion - 2 months quickly passed when I again contacted them to see what was going on... guess what... I had been denied a modification... whoops nobody told me. I aparently had to be at least one month behind on my mortgage to be considered... silly me I was current
So I proceeded to fall one month behind on my mortgage... they again denied me a modification this time because I was late on my pmt... and during all this they foreclosed, sally mae took the house, mand t claimed it on their title insurance and lost nothing and I get a letter the house had been sold at auction!

Here is my story, they (M&T) told my wife and I with complete certainty that a rework of my mortgage would not affect my credit score. We asked them very carefully several times to be absolutely certain this would not affect our credit score and they assured us it would not.
Low and behold, a few weeks later my credit lines were lowered for material negative information on my credit report, after further investigation, we found that in fact M&T reported the old loan in default and passed due. We paid the new loan structure on time and in full. After calling them to correct this they stated they "can do nothing". Total liars.

M&T Bank insuffiecent funds!

Due to Christmas falling on a Tuesday this year. I got about 5 insufficient funds charges attached to my account. Because my direct deposit didn't show up like it normally does Tuesday at midnight. I got it Thursday morning. BUT Wednesday was when i got all my charges drafted to my account... LOOONG story short.

I am stuck with -$220 in my account.

What is the point of giving two 1-800 numbers when you can't get through to speak to anyone. I said my purpose of calling and got "sorry I don't understand."

This bank SUCKS

I was a loyal Peoples' bank customer for over 40 years. Unfortunately, I now have had multiple issues with M and T Bank and their customer service. Yesterday, I closed all accounts at my local branch.

😒To top it all off, I was awakened at 2 AM last night, to receive an automatic TEXT from the bank thanking me for my business!

My Name is James Pyle on July 29,2022 one of your customers wrote me a certified check, and B of A cashed it and you did not honor it. I now have bounced checks. My bank account was held up for about 120 days.

Although I came here to basically see if anyone knew M&T Banks policies on overdraft fee reversal, I found it quite amusing how many are complaining about the bank simply because they do not know how to manage their money! I have Been with this bank for over 25 years and I can Tell you they are NOT stealing anyone’s money, and they are not charging you any fees you didn’t agree to pay when you opened the account! Very easy to blame any financial institution for your mistakes or misunderstandings rather then learning for yourself how to keep your bank account free from fees! But first hold yourself accountable for your wrongs before blaming the bank with the intent to ruin their rep! These blogs will never shut any business down but I guess It’s a good place for you all to come vent & feel sorry for yourselves! 😄 Stay well!

Tried to cash a check for $50. My account had negative balance of $130, but had pension deposit of over $3000 coming in first of every month. Manager Mathew Lyons refused to cash it even though I said would change banks if he didn't. Immediately went to Navy Federal Credit Union who cashed check right away. Will change banks‼️
