Let's Call M&T Bank's computer system "Hal"
I've been a customer of M&T since it was First National Bank of MD. "Hal, " M&T Bank's [censored] computer, knows this. I also have a checking account at Bank of America for my larger transactions. Hal probably knows this, too. I accidentally wrote a large check for $2500 on M&T check stationery which I meant to write on Bank of America check stationery. I made a mistake, mea culpa. Hal sprang into action and initiated an insufficient funds fee. Next day, the same transaction was automatically attempted, and there was Hal, again, applying another insufficient funds fee for the same check. Two smaller checks, which were covered by my meager M&T balance before this debacle, also bounced. Hal to the rescue with two more whammies. Whoever created Hal, it seems, you know, those software geniuses who can smell blood half a ledger page away, knew that Hal could determine that something was amiss by the large check amount. Any credit card company can do this in case of possible credit card theft. But shallow Hal was created "not" to have such stealthy wherewithal. Hal was written to be "stupid, " so that M&T can maximize its bottom line and brazenly tread on yours with these superfluous fees. It is perfectly legal. And you can hear M&T Bank singing "hardy-hal-hal" all the way home. Nice, huh?
bad recordkeeping & customer service
M&T Bank is the amateurish bank out there. You can't pay their bills online without setting up a checking account at their crappy bank.
I sent a payment for our car on 2/9. They didn't cash it until 2/26 & charged me with a $10 late fee. With the problem being with the post office or M&T themselves, I still couldn't get them to drop the fee after to talking with 2 customer "service specialists". Unreal!
Avoid this bank at all costs!

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE !
I have belonged to M&T bank for years, never really being happy with them, however this latest issue i have been dealing with is the last straw with them. I somehow had my debit/visa card info stolen, without physically losing my card. After realizing this from over $300 worth of gas purchases being made at a WaWa, that I DEF DID NOT DO, the people i was speaking with at their 800#, assured me how common this type of thing is, and basically went over with me exactly how this can happen. After telling me, they will credit me the money back, as i will have to fill out paperwork they mail me, explaining what happened, they also said that the money RARELY gets taken back. So i went on about my business, did what they told me to do, only to find out, 3 night ago, they went and took all that money back that they originally credited me.! Now, not only can i not pay my bills, i am fighting with them on trying to prove I did not authorize these transactions.. I faxed them a police report #, i gave them the wawa loss prevention reference # i was given, AND faxed over my work timecard to show i was working both days this all took place. They basically are calling me a liar, only because I physically never lost my card, and i was able to make transactions of my own, in between these unauthorized transactions... talk about FRUSTRATING! So now I am told i have to write a letter to the "card services" explaining everything that happened-AGAIN... since I am told they have no number to be reached cause they are a 'No customer contact" department... UNBELIEVABLE!
I will DEF be switching banks once i HOPEFULLY get this resolved. Talk about poor customer service...
safe deposit box policy
Do not open a safe deposit box at any M&T Bank.
If you do or already have one, make sure that you never close out a safe deposit box before your paid up year / annual fee is up. While most other banks will prorate a refund for the portion of the year that remains. M & T Bank does NO refund. I had a safe deposit box with them for many years. The $125 annual box fee was paid in full in January. The box was closed out in mid-March --- approximately $90 they keep. The "theft" of this is that they can still rent the box during the time that remains of my $90 and make an additional $90. The "customer service" staff just kept repeating the "company line."
This is true double dipping -- consumer rip-off at its best.

criminals
The bank is horrible... I had someone get my account information and charge hundreds of dollars to it, making it go negative and accrue hundreds more in over draft fees. I called the bank immdeiatley and told them something was goin gon and to freeze my account. Instead of getting help I got a snappy reply and then got told I was a liar and trying to file false charges. I hung up and went to the branch to speak with manager. I got the same response here and they refused to help me. So I then got corporates number and celled then where they refunded me half the money and refused to refund me the rest. Then asked me when I will be paying off my balance owed to them. I told them never and that my lawyer will be in contact with them. They hung up and I never heard back and nothing ever showed on my credit. A year later my BF had an account with them and his wallet was stolen while he was at the gym. They did the same thing to him and said they were going to take legal action against him for filing false claims. This is absurd never had any issues with bank account always had a positive balance had great credit and thye did this to not just me but my BF as well. Crummy bank and treats customers like crap. If I ever see anything on my credit report better believe I will sue.

I can not agree more with the complaints of these IDIOTS !
I went in to start to get my "assets" secured from a relationship that was/ is failing ... I told them I needed my own personal account sent to a diffrent name and address, I showed the proof of the name change that was going back to madien from married I also confided in them the need for this to be discreet so that I would not have to worry about any harassment or reprecussions of the person that the relationship was with . . I thought I was protected, till they changed all account information including to the person that I was trying to get away from ! Holy Hannah, I now have a bigger mess and all I got was an OOPS, Going else where tuesday morning . DO NOT DO BUSINESS with this enept group of idiots
bogus overdraft fees
My husband and I moved to Maryland and opened a checking account at M&T Bank, huge mistake. They put a hold on all deposited checks for a minimum of two days, but neglect to inform you of this small detail. This allows them to charge an overdraft fee of $ 37.00 per incident, even though you have deposited the funds to cover your purchases. Don't bother calling customer service, they will not issue a credit. I was told that the check hold policy is in all of their lobbies, not sure if this is true or not, regardless, I use the drive thru. Do yourself a favor and bank elsewhere, save the headache.

Maggie, don't confuse yourself with me. In addition to your normal symptoms, now you are having delusions of grandour.
Ravings of a psychopath...she needs to be locked up.
cverts - I hear you! These rip off banks also like to charge you when you call their customer service to tell them to correct an error THEY made.
BTW - Who is this psycho "Maggie"? Her idiotic posts appear to be dillusions of a psychopath.
their service is atrocious and I would advise everyone to avoid doing business with m&t at all costs
I (used to) rent from M&T. As per our contract, we gave 60 days notice of our intention to renew. Upon contacting them time and again in order to get the new contract from them, we had no response. Twenty days before the END of our lease at end September '09, I get an email from M&T saying that I should call them very urgently. Upon contacting them, I am told that they will NOT be renewing our lease as M&T wants to sell off these particular units. This leaves me with 20 days to find another place to stay, of which I am going to be away on a business trip for 9 days.
I eventually found another place to move into, and after the going-out inspection I was assured that our full deposit would be refunded within 7 - 10 working days. Again, nothing happened. I was eventually only refunded 2 days late after I started harassing them with emails and phone calls, threatening to take the matter to the relevant authorities.
Throughout this entire process, everyone (except Okkie) I spoke to at M&T acted as if they couldn't care less about a) my homeless state or b) that they owe me money. Their service is atrocious and I would advise everyone to avoid doing business with M&T at all costs.
gouges customer
M&T Bank (4830 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring, PA [protected], Contact Mark Katkovcin [protected]) has joined the masses of banks forcing exorbitant overdraw fees on consumers, even when the overdraw is their own fault. In one case, mine, the phone representative--who is apparently held to no responsibility--said my account was fine, and I intended on closing the account entirely. When I attempted to close the account, I was instead informed I owed them hundreds of dollars. Their manager promised to fix it, then disappeared for six months. Every subsequent attempt to contact was rebuffed until I received a collections letter for almost $1100! That's over a thousand dollars in overdraw fees when the bank was at fault.
Upon contact with M&T phone representative around 05/1/2010, was told that all current balances were okay and explicitly told that no charges would come out of my account. One week later, received $250 in charges. Upon speaking with the supervisor for previous phone representative around 05/10/2010, was told that clearly that I was either lying or wrong. Contacted local bank and district managers to clear up the situation. Their phone representative caused the issue with an inaccurate misrepresentation. Was told by Mark Katkovcin, Administrative Vice President, around 05/14/2010 that he understood and this issue would be cleared up. He passed it on to Sonia Torres at the local bank. A month later around 06/07/2010, I sent an email to Mark Katkovcin asking for an update. I did not receive any response. Around 09/23/2010 I received a collections bureau notice that I now owed approximately $1100. This consists mostly of overdraft fees, extended overdraft fees, and late fees. The actual overcharge is unknown. I had offered to pay the amount overdrawn, and was rebuffed and told to pay the overdraft. I asked for a courtesy refund, and was told that they could refund less than half of the fees. I refused. Around 9/24/2010 I was contacted by the bank vice president stating that since I refused to accept a partial refund they consider the case closed.
I have had the same problems and was ripped off and given wrong info many times. This bank has gone down hill fast. When my husband was working and we were depositing 1500 to 2000 a week we didn't have problems, but now that we are a one income family, I keep getting pounded with overdraft fees and wh hen you call a rep, one says everything is fine and we will fix the mistake and then a few days later they hit you with fees again. I guess I did not notice that my account was not right because there was more money in there. When you have an average account you really notice the fees. Is there anything I can do. I already closed my account and m&t said there would be no more withdrawals but I could still have my direct deposit . Yea deposit my paycheck and not be able to get it out.
I have also had a tremendous amount of problems with M&T Bank. It is infuriating, and due to M&T reporting an account to Chexsystems I am unable to open one elsewhere. The account M&T reported was from a supposed unpaid overdraft in 2007. I had closed all bank accounts in 2007 and moved. The account was reported unpaid but I wasn't notified until 2010, although I've held an account with them since! When I had finally gotten the notice, I couldn't prove otherwise and paid it over the phone, received confirmation in the mail, and found out a few days ago (2011) that it still shows unpaid and I cannot open an account.
In 2007 as well my personal information was linked to a stranger's business account for 3 years, and I only found out when they asked me which one I wanted to make a deposit to. When I reported that it was inaccurate it took a month to straighten out. It was straightened out when I called the Business and they contacted the bank as well.
I was out of work for a few months and had to make a transfer of funds from savings to checking to pay a bill, they put the funds in the wrong account, which caused my check to bounce, and then they charged a 30 fee on top of the overdraft.
Crooks like this make it seem futile to straighten yourself out. It's devastating. I am still young, the mistakes Ive made at 18 still haunt me. I went CRAZY paying off everything last year. LEFT and RIGHT places like this are falsely reporting unpaid debt. By the time any inaccuracy you report back is investigated, your 5 years are up and it's removed anyway. Worse yet, I've have unpaid statuses confirmed accurate, and went on to send receipts, yet STILL have not seen updates.
forms of id
I recently moved from New Jersey to Buffalo and wanted to open a local bank account (I'm with PNC in NJ). When I went to M&T in Buffalo, they wouldn't accept my NJ Driver's license as a form of ID. Never before has my NJ license been refused as a form of ID! In fact it's a holographic license and everyone needs to show either a passport or birth certificate just to get a NJ license. I had to go home to get my passport and go back to open the account.
Also, when I was opening the account, the branch manager specifically said there were no fees to transfer money between banks. It turns out I was lied to and there is a $3 fee for everytime I send money from M&T to another bank electronically.

cashing an m&t ck @ their bank
I went to the bellefonte branch to cash a small($114.)pay check which was their ck. I cash small checks drawn on their bank often simply using the drive through with my photo ID.Well on 08/10/10 things suddenly got UGLY. I was told by the window clerk that because i didn't have a M&T account i would have to bring 2 forms of ID into the bank to cash my...

I only have an account here because one of their mortgage officers came highly recommended. Now I'm stuck with M&T for 30 years!
*They don't offer coin counting. Not even for a fee. What kind of bank can't count coins?
*If they transfer money between your checking and savings, it costs $10. I've never had a bank charge a fee for something a computer does automatically to MY money.
*Several of their branches in my area are only open from 10a-3p. WTF?
*I have rarely overdrawn an account in my life. Since opening an account at M&T, it seems I am constantly overdrawing. Their $37 fees, which are much higher than any I've ever experienced, are facilitating my overdrafts.
Let me tell you a story:
I had an overdraft fee charged to my account when I had enough money to pay for the transaction. "Honest mistake, " thought I, so I went to the closest branch to remedy the problem. The woman at the bank told me she could not help me because I had opened my account at another branch. I thought this was the point of having branches - convenience for your customer. Silly me.
So I drove 10 miles to the branch in which I had opened the account. Conveniently, the person who could help me was out at an appointment. The people in the bank promised me a call back that day.
The next afternoon, I received a call from the bank. It seems a hold had been placed on my account. With that hold on my account (which I had no idea was there), I didn't have enough money to pay for subsequent transactions. Five or six overdraft fees later, I now also don't have enough to pay the transaction that was on hold in the first place, and now I'm charged a fee for that one as well.
They won't reverse ANY of the charges (I was willing to admit fault for having such a low balance and take most of the fees), even the one for the invisible hold.
And now I see on their website that they have overdraft protection. Which they never mentioned to me.
Thanks for nothing, M&T!

MADE A PAYMENT TO BANK USING MY CHECKING, PAYMENT WAS NEVER FORWARDED, WAS TOLD I WAS ON COUPON BOOK THEN, DIDNOT HAVE WITH ME, SO THEY USED 8 HUNDRED AND TEN DOLLARS UP IN LATE FEES.PLUS AM ONE PAYMENT BEHIND ON LOAN SINCE 2006. MONEY WAS THERE, JUST WAS NOT CREDITED TO LOAN. ALSO WHEN I CLOSED OUT CHECKING ACCOUNT(FREE CHECKING)THEY TALKED ME INTO LETTING 1.91 IN. AFTER A FEW MONTHS IT COST ME TWENTY SOMTHING. WAS CHARGED FOR NOT USING CHECKING ACCOUNT. SO BEWARE OF THIS CRAP AT M&T BANKS
I have used several banks because of relocation. When I moved to a town where M&T Bank was the most convenient bank to go with I was in for a shocker of my life. These folks actually rearrange transactions to hit consumers with overdraft fees. They do not payout transactions in the order they're presented. I learned this the hard way when my employer was late paying me and before I knew it, transactions that were charged on Friday reflected a Monday's date and then they took the highest charge that was charged on Saturday and moved that to the first transaction of the list, causing subsequent transactions to bounce so they could charge me $37 per overcharge. Then when I made a cash deposit, they held onto the deposit and would not let it reflect in my account until 2 business days later. I have never seen any mess like this in my entire life. DO NOT BANK WITH M&T. I will be switching banks even though I will have to travel further to get away from these people. I have never written a bad review of a bank before. M&T Bank is my first bad review of a bank and hopefully will be my last. They need to seriously just get bought out by someone who really knows how to bank. They are crooks and anyone working for them should be ashamed of themselves. The money is going to the greedy, filthy rich people at the top not you and they could care less about consumers nor their employees.
all of sudden &debit fee& to transfer money out
Recently I was hit with a “debit fee” when I transferred my money from M&T bank to another bank online. They never have any fees like that. And as far as I know, other banks (PNC, Bank of America, …) do not have any “debit fee” like that too. After contacting M&T bank, I was let know that they sent me a secured message in M&T system about 3 weeks before the fee started to apply.
WHY
- M&T not send me a physical letter to my address to let me know any fee structure change. I do NOT receive my statement online. What will happen to the customers that does not use M&T online banking. How do they suppose to know that?
- If M&T wants to save cost to send letter, at least M&T should call me or email an message to my email address
I am closing all of my 3 year old accounts with M&T today and switch my direct deposit to PNC bank.

You are hit with one fee over a three year period and you go crazy and switch banks? wow... talk about dramatic
stealing
M&T Bank needs to be investigated for legally stealing customers hard earned money. Between the nickle and diming fee's they fail to tell there customers, re arranging the order of transactions and holding deposits to ensure multiple ocer draft fee's. They just took $270.00 from me in over draft charges when i had over $1000 in the bank to cover the $200.00 in charges i made. I went to the bank with my print out which shows i was never even close to being overdrawn, and i am told " the funds were not available to you yet" even though my bank receipt and statement shows my balance. I have the proof and i am in search of a lawyer.
I overdrew my account eighty five cents when a store error and credit never was credited until days after the purchase was debited. I was given very practiced speeches on why a loan payment from five days previous to this transaction allowed them to charge me thirty eight dollars even though it was a ninety nine cent movie rental that came through on the same day that technically overdrew the account. They would not relent and kept my money, but I am going to take notes on what they say because it changes with each disputed charge. I definitely anticipate an investigation of this banks practices and the consumers they are defrauding.
My truck loan was through M and T, payment was transferred automatically as my paycheck was direct deposit...I was paid on the 1st and 15th so loan payment was specified to be transferred the 3rd of each month giving me a 2 day cushion.
We also had a home equity loan and a mortgage for some rental property similarly set up.
My empolyer had a problem with their computers and over the course of a weekend all paychecks missed their mark by 3 days. I was hit with $372 in late fees and overdraft penalties...Worse - I was NOT notified so our balance WE THOUGHT was $372 more than it actually was...we bought a $306 grill before finding out what had happened.
Needless to say I appealed to everyone but the only one that stepped up to the plate was my employer and reimbursed me for their part in the dibacle...M and T was rude and held firm on the charges.
I will never deal with them again! And I hope nobody else will either
The same exact thing happened to me. They told me, "for that day there wasn't enough money in my account to cover the charges". When you look at the online report and my available balance my account never went negative. I had 12 over draft fees on my account of $37.00 each for low amounts (amounts under $20.00).The reason for this was they also rearranged my charges from greatest to smallest so multiple small charges incurred insufficient funds fees. I had well over the amount I needed before all the fees hit. This account is used for every day purchases such as milk, gas, etc. I have another account I pay my bills with. Thank goodness nothing has happened to that account yet. When I called the bank, they where very rude said there was nothing they could do and said I needed to go to my local branch. When I went in I had to show them all my receipts, the bank print out, my bank account ledger and it took 3 HOURS! After three hours they said they would LOOK into it. Two weeks later I got a call and had to go back to the bank for the branch manager to try and weasel out of it by saying "there wasn't enough money in the account for that day", which made absolutely no sense. After me explaining, with my husband there this time; after 1 1/2 hours the branch manager said he would take the fees off as a courtesy. He never said they made a mistake or even apologized to me for the time they wasted. I actually was made to feel I was stealing their money by them taking the fees off. I was with M&T Bank for 14 years, now I am with my husband's Credit Union and they are wonderful. M&T Bank could learn a lot from the Credit Union. One major thing PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THEN MONEY!
awful customer service
M&T Bank displayed the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I had to request a new debit card 3 times from the bank becuase they never sent it. Once I finally received my Debit card, they failed to give me a PIN code. I had to request a PIN code throught he mail. After 10 days, I hadn't received the PIN code and they claimed to send it. I made one last request and it was not sent so I called them and vented my frustration. The customer service representative made no effort to remedy the situation and blamed the Post Office. The Manager I spoke with ensured that their policy is to provide me with a confirmation number when iinformation is sent to the customer. I WAS NEVER GIVEN A CONFIRMATION NUMBER FOR ANY OF MY REQUESTS. This bank is horrible. I would recommend you to stay away from M&T at all costs. They are absolutely worthless and should be shut down.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
M & T bank raised my Rate from 3 % to 15.98 % and is there is no way to pay this back.
I went to an attorney and they have not been able to settle the matter and now the Attorney says it's to hard of a fight.
M & T have used predatory lending tools and violate the consumer loan laws. I think if we could do a class action suit we could win.
If you are willing to meet in Maryland and file a class we all sue M & T the courts will hear us.
consumer beware
M&T mortgage consumer beware
If you are thinking of a mortgage, you must defintely avoid M&T bank. They will put clauses in their documents making your life miserable and threaten you later on to do all kinds of things to you. In addition, even if you are late one day in ten years to send your payment (within of course the grace period) they will start calling you with automated sytems! Be absolutely careful of their mortgage clauses!
Do not just depend on my opinion. Search the web for related complains. They are a fourth grade bank of unprofesionals to deal with. I am in the process of refinancing and go with a better bank.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I have been on the phone with different morgage companies this pass week trying to refinance my 120, 000 dollar home that is now worth 80.000. Four lenders wouldnt refinance do to the fact that i am self employed and the value is less than I owe. So I call our good friends M&T Bank they recently purchased my morgage from Bank Of America. I was Told there Is a $700 dollar start up fee just to see if I could qualify. Then a four to five thousand dollar closeing cost. I lost my temper and said some rude things to that poor lady.
I was gonna call them back and see if they could work with me maybe go a diffrent route like a morgage addjustment. But after reading all these bad reviews about "Obamas make homes affordable program and M&T Bank" I have decided to just rent my house out and stop paying my morgage. The only thing thats pisses me off about it is that with the PMI that I HAVE BEEN PAYING the past five years will allow them to get 80% of what I first borrowed. They still make Money off the house even more than the house is worth. I couldnt sell it for 100, 000. ###! Look at the brite side ill make the PMI back that I paid in off the renters. ALL BANKS SUCK
From a recent Bain & Company and Prime Performance study: Small banks and credit unions in the Northeast are outperforming some of the nation’s largest lenders when it comes to overall customer experience, according to a recently released poll.
M&T Bank ranks well among the 11 major banks included in the 2011 Northeast U.S. Bank & Credit Union Customer Experience Survey. It is the leading or second-leading large bank in 20 of the survey’s 23 total categories.
One lender with a local presence didn’t fare so well. HSBC Bank, which is in the process of shedding its Upstate New York retail branches, ranked 11th among the 11 named banks for customer experience.
I so agree with you. I have a bunch of lawyers working on them for me right now.
fees
MT&T Bank has designed overdraft fee scam to steal as much money as possible from people accounts. Transactions are posted in different time frame so you would be confused and unsure how much money you really have on your account. Customer service told me that their system, online banking account, is not reliable and doesn't give you the real state of your account, you have to bring with you a piece of paper everywhere and do yourself manually calculating how much you spend, how much money you have left. So why to bather with online banking than? Many times I made deposit by cash in the morning and used later my debit card but been charged insufficient amount fees even though the money on my account. MT&T posting transaction to your account just days later so to make you confused. For the last year I paid in overdraft fees over $2000 alone even though I am very careful with my account and was checking balance daily.
I would like to ask all customers of MT&T with similar concern to proceed with a class suit action against the greediness and manipulation to gain profit unlawfully stealing money from peoples pockets.
excessive overdraft fees
Over the holiday my personal account was charged up to $700 in overdraft fees. Some of the fees were charged even after I had made a cash deposit. The bank told me that the checks cleared before the deposit?
M&T encourages customers to continue using their check card even after their accounts are overdrawn and then they hit you with the fees. As a former Provident Banker, that was never the case. If your account was short the transaction was declined.
In these hard economic times banks are oppressing customers who are already squeezed to the limits. Charging these type of fees when we have to clothe and feed our children in unconsciable.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Seriously there needs something down about this excessive overdraft fees that are legit. I recently use my M&T card which ended in a nightmare and still is. I love the fact as soon as you make a transaction you can log into the online banking minutes later and see the transaction. Well I used my card and bought a seven dollar item - went to the atm and did a withdrawl for $10.00 and went to Walmart and spent$ 40 -$50.00. On my way home I calculated all my expenses and realized I spent too much at Walmart. I went straight to a atm and deposit a small paycheck to cover it. Went home and check and everything seemed fine. Well a few days later when I checked my account online I notice 2 NSF charges on 2 purchases that were paid and clear my account which caused all 3 purchases I made that one day bounce then one of my direct deposites went into my checking account and was ate up by all the feeswhich I think today has finally stopped the trickle down affect . I had a total of 10 NSF's charges to my account and I it was all caused by them charge 2 payments that cleared! You tell me how can that be possible? How cAn they get away with that! I emailed them they tried giving me the run around about pending this and that etc etc. I know the money was in there and after those 2 purchases that cleared (the ones that were charged NSF) there was a positive balance which cover the next 2 tranctions and the 3rd ws the one that I realized I had went over and told them I take full responsibilty for that. To this day I am still getting the run around. I worked 3 jobs just so I have a little extra to spend on food, gas and ocassion shopping for home things. When they pay the transactions and there isnt money to cover it the transactions show up red. When your transactions that clear your account when there is enough money in your account shows up black on your online statements. The 2 purchses in the beginning that were charge the NSF 's were in black meaning they had cleared. All the transaction that were pd even though the money wasnt in the account due to there NSF Charges are all in RED! So what we cant believe what the the online statements say now. I never had a problem like this before. I am so done with them . Oh and lets not forget the penalty of $10.00 for having the NSF 's pass 5 days! I want to know who to contact that will get something done about this and see it for what it is. I'm going back to cash!
well tired of stupid, quit being STUPID. M &T has a habit of manipulating transactions and deposit holds to screw their customers . I know firsthand as I have seen transaction dates being backdated before the deposits clear, all to screw their customers . If you are thinking of using this bank, don't . Intstead run for the hills or a nice customer appreciating credit union:)
lost checks
I have a car loan that was funded by M&T Bank since Febuary of 2009. Now I have been paying major bills for 12 years now. I've never had a problem with the post office getting my bills to the appropriated destination. This includes a mortgage, other car loans, boat loans etc... I sent in a payment several months ago. They never received it. I figured maybe I forgot the stamp. It was never returned. I got another late notice the other day and I know I put a stamp on this one. I called the bank and told them I made the payment and they have to have received it. They said they haven't. The specialist was arguing with me when I wanted a pay off balance to get a loan through another bank. She blamed it on the post office. Would not take off the late fee and asked if I was going to make a payment. I told her not at this time that when I send in my next payment I will send in a double payment. She was not happy and continued to argue that it is not on their end. I told her she may not beleive me but I did send it and had everything correct on the address and stamp and that I am through with doing business with them. I could see once this happens but twice within 6 months. I don't think so. M&t is no good!

Funny I ran across this comment.. As luck (or bad luck) would have it, I too am going through this very thing with M&T Bank! I made my payment through my bank with online bill payment, the due date on the car loan is the 11th of every month. It is not considered late until the 23rd of the month. I sent the payment out on the 4th of the month, it was posted to my account on the 5th, my bank said it was delivered by the 12th (which is still considered an on time payment). Conveniently, M&T Bank says they didn't get it until the 24th which is one day late according to them (isn't that convenient?!?!?!). Their customer service reps were TERRIBLE and I let them know about it. They told me every loan was entitled to one "forgiveness" on a late payment which they were willing to do. I declined because it is my contention that I was not late and didn't need to be forgiven for anything, and heaven forbid I am late at some time during this loan I may need to utilize that feature. I went round and round with customer service and their answer was they can not control the mail. Well neither can I and I sent that payment with enough time for it to be a timely payment, how do I know it wasn't sitting on someone's desk for almost 2 weeks?!?!?! This bank is a joke and I am sorry I have to do business with them for the next 6 years!
Anyone getting a loan of any type through this company best beware, they are scam artists of the worst kind!
stealing from cistomers
It is bad enough that M&T Bank now charges .50 everytime you use your pin number, this includes withdrawing your money from the branches ATM, but now they have made it a habbit to make sure they squeeze as many Overdraft Fee's as possible. For expample on 11/18/2009 my balance was $50.44 on 11/19/2009 these transactions were posted to my account $15.00. $8.01 and $5.70 obvisously i had the funds to cover these. Until a check for $70.00 went in the same day, and a day to early. So instead of charging me ONE $37.00 overdraft fee for the $70.00 check, they rearranged the order of the transactions so the largest amount was proccessed first so the they could charge me FOUR overdraft fee's to equal $148.00. This is stealing

oh there famous for reflecting a deposit as available to you, then racking up multiple overdraft fee's saying it wasn't. Then why in the hell does my receipt and online banking say it's there? re arranging transactions holding deposits they are nothing but thieves

M&T are crooks and reorder transactions purposely to get more fees. I will be filing a claim against them in small claims and closing my account. I am sick and tired of it.
M&T has rearranged the order of my transactions several times to get as many possible fees as possible. They claim this is a service to you, making sure that your largest checks go through. However, this contradicts with their other 'service' argument, that they don't reject transactions due to insufficient funds. So if they're going to process them and cover the costs -anyway-. why is it important that the largest transactions go through first?
To screw you, the loyal customer. That's why. My family has been with M&T for something like..ten years or so? Maybe less, whenever the local branch moved into town. My branch has always had good customer service, but in dealing with ANY other branch or, horror of horrors, their corporate lines... these guys are miserable. They're here to rip you off, you know it, they know it, they know you know it. You are sheep led to slaughter, you have no rights.
Not that any other banks are any better, but I'm leaving M&T for good. They've STOLEN enough of my money unjustly with unneccesary and undue fees. At the very least its time to let another company have a go at my wallet. I can't -wait- until the new legislation takes hold to remove these practices.
I recently (on 12/28/2009) made a deposit at an M&T atm, which showed 100.00 was available immmediately. I went to an appointment, then to grab a few (28.08) groceries. The next morning I checked my online banking and it still showed a positive balance, but 2 overdraft fee. Before my deposit I had 3.81 available after all my debits. I called their 800# and was told I did not make my deposit until 12/29. I had my reciept so I proceeded to call the branch my account is through. At that time I was told that my 100.00 was ONLY AVAILABLE IF I were to take a cash withdrawl on the spot at the atm. I proceeded to tell the manager this was a bunch of ###, available should be available. they reversed 2 overdrafts because of it, however they put the rest of my charges (on the 29th) for fuel, lunch and a stop for milk through after they had reversed the 2 intial fees. I whole heartedly agree that they are crooks! I wrote a letter to our senator in regards to this. there is nothing in the literature you are given when you open an account that your funds are only available at the atm, and not for purchases. they lie all the way and continue to rip people off!
unethical business practices
The final straw was today. Ever since M&T bought Provident, whom I banked with for almost a decade, I have had expensively bad and unethical service. M&T took over and NEVER annouced their fee structure and raised it w/o informing me, their customer. They did away with Provident's lockbox checking practices that held money that had pending transactions against it, decreasing the liklihood of overdrafts.
Now, M&T takes transactions and manipulates the processing time so that they can charge NSF fees. It doesn't matter if you catch your mistake and deposit CASH to cover it, they still charge it and justify it by saying that they credit cash AFTER you did the original transaction.
They have poor real estate for their ATMs causing me to use other ATMs and incur fees as a result.
I have been laid off and am in the Air National Guard. After the government rectified a pay mistake that they caused, I went almost a month w/o pay and incurred some overdrafts. I KNEW that I would have to pay the fees, as distateful as that is. I realize there are consequences for my actions. However, when I had a deposit go in and I made everything good, I found that M&T had a 24 hour hold on my account. When I called Sustomer support they told me that it was their policy and that it could not be waived. I pointed out that I had a positive balance and that the bank made some decent fees off of me and that they were holding my money hostage.
To add insult to injury, the CSR hung up on me.
I have had conversations with Asst Branch managers who have confided in me their disatisfaction with their new employer. In all, I estimate that I have paid upwards of $800 in fees since the takeover. That does not take into account the fact that many of my transactions that were heretofore honored by Provident were manipulated into NSF status by their unethical practices. I am finally closing my account and am putting the word out aboutr these userious bandits, in my opinion.

M&T Banking software deducts debits in descending order prior to posting credits regardless of the chronological order in which they were received. Consequently, it is routine for the working poor, elderly, disabled worker, and disabled veteran who has a direct deposit to find that they are being charged multiple Insufficient Fund Fees because of the software's deducting, in descending order the largest debit down to the smallest debit, prior to credits being posted which may have come in chronologically prior to the debits. This practice at the very least is unethical, manipulative, devious, deceitful, and designed to generate income from Insufficient Funds Fee which would not have occurred had the credits been posted as they arrived at the bank and the debits deducted chronologically instead of largest first in an effort to cause multiple ISF Fees. cheating
M&T denied me some of the Money I deposited through their ATM. I deposited 100 dollars and the bank said they found only twenty dollars. My effort to resolve the issue with the local branch turned to a nasty argument with the manager of the branch who has no respect for her clients what so ever. Taking the matter to the higher level of the management, the customer service and corporate office turned out with nothing but denial of admitting that I am being unfairly treated and my money is being ripped off. I can't do anything but close my account and move to other banks that give a much better service than M&T. I don't know how many people like me have lost their money at M&T but I warn you guys out there to think twice before you want to do business with M&T Bank.

I'm a medical student, and I just got $600 stolen by M&T Bank. I opened a checking account with M&T Bank on 1/18/2011, and faxed my signature card to them; they accepted my opening deposit. I received a notice from them about a week later stating that my account was frozen until I fax in a utility bill, social security card, and drivers license as well. I did just as they asked. I then later found out, after trying to pull an ACH from the account, that a freeze was on my account (the ACH had returned to the originator). I called them about it, and they said that they couldn’t read my fax and that I should resend it. They also specified that it is not their job to contact me regarding problems with my account, and that if I have a problem then I should call them. I re-sent, called again the next day, they still couldn’t read it. They suggested that I enlarge the fax, so I sent yet another fax which was enlarged. I called again the next day, they said the freeze was still on the account, and that the fax was too enlarged, and suggested that I send a different utility bill. I then faxed a different utility bill, along with my social security card, and drivers license. I called again the next day, freeze was still on the account, they don’t know why and nothing can be done because there is no notes on my account. After being transferred around a number of times, the final lady said there was some question whether the original deposit I made was even valid or fraudulant. Fuming angry, I called Huntington Bank (the bank from which all deposits had originated) and they told me that this was nonsense, that of course the deposits were valid. They suggested that I try to work with the bank to get my money back, but that if they refuse to release my money to me, Huntington would submit something through their law department to get the deposits back from them. The loss prevention department (Regina Eagan [protected]) at M&T Bank will not speak with me directly and I’ve been unable over the past six weeks to get any help getting this freeze off of my account. They took the $600 from my Huntington account to fund this account. I've already received a $25 returned ACH fee assessed to one of my other accounts because I tried to pay a bill with the money in this account. These people are crooks! Do not do business with these people.
M and T seems to be an island of themselves they admit no wrong and scam everyone...
I can hardly believe they have any customers at all.
Get this - A Jewlery store funnels several hundred thousand dollars a week through Mand T because located is a branch next to the jeweler. The lady that handles the books for the jewelry store, when asked if she is happy with M and T replied "they're convienient...right next door" when asked if they ever make mistakes "oooh yes honey all the time but they are very nice and usually fix the problem"...Usually?
