Littman Jewelers Ring Repair

I was a victim of “Bait and Switch” recently at the Greece Ridge Mall, Rochester, NY Littman Jewelers store.

On July 5, 2016, I brought my diamond channel ring to this store for the tightening of a tiny loose diamond. I spoke with Jen, a salesperson there. Jen noticed that the base of my band was bent and worn from age and suggested that I have it repaired at the same time the jeweler tightened the stone. Another salesperson happened to overhear the conversation and she came over and explained that she just sent her ring in because it, too, had worn thin over the years. She explained that the jeweler would cut the bottom of the ring and rebuild the bottom of the shank and when the repair was done, it would look like a brand new ring. I asked if at the time the bottom shank was removed and rebuilt, if it could be enlarged. The salesperson indicated that they could certainly do this and there would not be an extra charge for the enlargement, which was approximately a quarter size larger (from size 5-3/4 to size 6).

Jen looked up the price of each repair. I was quoted a price of $25 plus tax for the stone tightening and $160 plus tax for the half-shank work, for a TOTAL of $185 plus tax. Jen filled out the work request, where she indicated the TOTAL cost as $185 plus tax for the entire job. On the receipt to the left of the price, is an area where she circled “CHRG”. Also on this line are other words including “ESTIMATE”. The word “ESTIMATE” is NOT circled, thus indicating that my charge (cost) would be $185 plus tax.

Today, July 8, 2016, I received a message asking me to call the store because they had a new “Estimate” for me. When I returned the call, I was told that the cost would now be $375 plus tax for the stone tightening and half shank. I explained that I was quoted an actual price and not an estimate, as evidenced by my receipt. The salesperson then said that the jeweler indicated that he needed to use more gold because my band was thick. I indicated that I was very unhappy with this change and if the store would not honor the price I was quoted, I did not want the work done and would pick up my ring. Furthermore, I stated that I would go online and write negative comments regarding my experience and caution others not to deal with Littman Jewelers. The salesperson stated that she would let the jeweler know that I dd not want the work done. I asked if she had the ring so that I could pick it up and was told that the jeweler had it. I told her I would like it back right away and to call me when it was there so that I could pick it up.

To add “insult to injury”, I went on the Littman Jewelers Facebook page and commenced to tell my story to warn others not to deal with Littman Jewelers. After submitting my comments, they did not appear on the page. Obviously, you block comments from individuals who have a complaint. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT I WILL BE COMMENTING ON OTHER WEBSITES REGARDING THIS UNPROFESSIONAL, UNETHICAL “BAIT AND SWITCH” EXPERIENCE.

Also, once I have my ring back, I plan to take it to a reputable jeweler to be sure that my diamonds have not been exchanged for other cheap or fake stones.

I will also be contacting the BBB, Attorney General's Office and the Jewelers Vigilance Committee regarding this experience.

Littman Jewelers the worst customer service of all time

I never write a complaints before, because i work in retail so i always say to myself to give everybody the benefit of the doubt. i always go to Littman jewelers because i always receive great customer service from them especially from a guys name tom. but after today i was speechless. i purchase a watch on saturday, and i went to sales to get my diamond clean and i saw the same watch i purchased at littman jewelers at zale for 200 dollars less. so i decided to return the Littman one. as i walk in the guy name aidan i guess he suppose to be a manager said why did you purchase something so expensive if you were going to return it? to me that was very rude. anyway he said it was worn, its all scratch up. i ask him i purchased four days ago, i never worn it its been sitting in the box he start giving me attitudes and treating me so low. i never felt this way before, from yelling at me to saying I'm lying that i worn. it was just a horrible experience .

Littman Jewelers Defective Diamond Ring

My fiance bought my ring here, and he spent three-thousand dollars cash on a .60 carat, H-color, I2 Canadian diamond. During the time he was away at school, I noticed imperfections inside my diamond. I mentioned it to him, and we decided to go back to Littman’s to point out the faults together and try to exchange the ring when he came back from school. When we went to Littman’s to do so, we both found out for the first time that we would have to double what we originally spent, bringing us up to six-thousand dollars. We did entertain the idea of doing so by going back three other times, but it was just too expensive and out of our budget! I went to other jewelers to see if they'd buy if from me so I could get a new ring, but was only offered $300 tops because of the diamond quality. On a ring we spend $3000 on! Another jeweler said he wouldn't have sold it new in his store for more than $1500; half of what we paid.

This information we were given from multiple gemologists and appraisers makes us feel that Littman’s robbed us of our money. When we went back to Littman’s and expressed all this information, they denied that we ever complained about diamond quality and they would not work with us, even though we tried multiple times. The ladies at the store were very rude and unprofessional when speaking with us, and lied to their regional manager about our complaints. I don’t know why they say we never complained about the diamond quality when we had an appointment to look at other diamonds and were given a Littman’s diamond quality chart to educate ourselves on diamond qualities.

They told me that the regional manager would contact me, and he never did. I had to back to the store and ask why I never heard anything, and they said that I should talk to corporate instead. Well, why didn't they call me and tell me that instead of making me wait and giving me false hope of hearing from someone higher than them?

I wrote a letter to the corporate office and I still never heard anything back from them. I am so disappointed in this company and will never shop there ever again or recommend them to anyone. I want to get rid of this ring and never have to think about what they did to us ever again. I am so hurt by what they did to my poor fiance, they ripped him off so bad and made him think he was getting a good deal when he wasn't.

H has a slight yellow tint to them and I2 clarity is going to have noticeable inclusions to the unaided eye.
If you want something with better color, like D, E, or F and clarity that you seem to want, you’ll need to at least have a SI2 and up. The prices go up substantially due to those specs and also, how well is the diamond cut. If your diamond is certified, you should request an AGS certificate. AGS uses the strictest grading system in the diamond industry. EGL and IGA, for example will often grade a diamond as a F SI3 (which there is not an SI3, it’s an I1 disguised as as an “SI” clarity diamond.
AGS will certify color at, for example a I color, and EGL or IGA will rate it as in the colorless D-F range. It’s very deceptive.
I worked for Fred Meyer/Littman Jewelers and other jewelers and have seen varying certification on diamonds. AGS is really the only diamond I would personally buy, but just because a diamond has “almost colorless” or “slightly included” does not mean it’s a terrible diamond. Sometimes people want a larger carat and then they have to adjust their color and clarity expectations. Some folks want a colorless and flawless or near flawless stone and those are rare and expensive. To stay in a budget for that, customers will opt for a smaller diamond, but it will sparkle, well depending on the accuracy of the cut.
Many times competitors will try to offer you as little as possible. That’s how they make money. They figure you want to trade in and you might go for it. Littman should have no issue with trading up the diamond for something with better clarity and color, but it will cost more.
I worked in Fine Jewelry for 9 years at 4 different jewelers. Different companies meet different needs. I would suggest you just give customer service a call and see if they can help you. Usually jewelers give you a “trade in” policy as long as you double the price, but they can possibly arrange for you to not required to double the price. If you pay 3k, you trade in 3k but must make a 6k purchase.. but sometimes, you can trade in a 3k for a 4-5k and then you’ll spend about another grand or 2 on a better quality diamond. Good luck. Littman has great customer service and right now, they will probably make a deal to get a sale..but keep in mind, good, silver, platinum..all precious metals are very expensive now. So that will definitely factor in the price..

From looking at the photo you've posted with your complaint I see BLACK CARBON inside of your diamond! I certainly don't sell any color of diamonds with BLACK CARBON in them!

Reading your comment here I must tell you that I am a GRADUATE GEMOLOGIST. And if your fiancee bought you an I2 clarity diamond. That means "INCLUSIONS ARE VISIBLE TO YOUR NAKED EYE" so apparently he didn't mind the quality he purchased for you. Or he wasn't concerned about the EYE VISIBLE INCLUSIONS in the diamond he purchased for you.

I myself DO NOT SELL I2 clarity diamonds of any color UNLESS my client/clients strictly request one. And even if they do i'm going to select one for them that is almost an SI2 in its clarity.

The best jewelery store EVER! I was hesitant walking in, I had been scorned by every other jewelry store on the strip but walking in was different all on it's own. They were warm, welcoming and no pressure. I said "I am just looking, " defensively. They smiled and said "that's okay, take your time, look around, if you need me, my name is.." I looked and...
