My family member, who had been horribly depressed because of a very painful health condition, attempted suicide. She was admitted to a medical unit where she did not receive any counsiling whatsoever for 4 days and then was transfered to the most horrible psych unit I have ever seen. They mix them in with murderers and rapists, etc, who stand outside her door and yell about how they are going to kill so and so when they get released and exactly how they are going to do it. They are not allowed to have a cell phone, tv, or anything to do at all but either stay in their room alone and terrified or be brave and venture out to mix in with people who are talking to themselves violently, pounding on their chests etc. I didn't even want to walk past them, so I can't imagine how horrible it must be for her to be stuck there. Since she has been there, she hasn't eaten because she is too afraid to go get the food because of the way the creepy men talk to her. She is afraid to take a shower, which is down the hall. The "group" meetings is the only support thing that they offer and she is afraid to go to that. How is someone who, couldn't even bring themself to go to a therapist as an outpatient, expected to go for the first time to speak about her personal problems in front of a group of scary men who are violent. When I tried to talk to staff, they just took it out on her and said "So I hear you've been calling people and complaining about us!" The worst of it is that, not only do they not do a single thing to help her so that she won't try suicide again, they are just sticking her there for a whole week and then releasing her to go home where she can just do it again. They claim that inpatient mental health is not for therapy, it is just meant to get them out of a crisis. Well how?! How are they getting her out of it? They aren't doing anything at all. They gave her pills that give her horrible side effects and don't work and that's it. They take a depressed person and put them in the most depressing conditions and expect them to get better. Noone will help me. I went all the way to the director who just blew me off. Basically, anyone who was nice just agreed with me but said they were sorry. They agreed the system is very flawed but there was nothing they could do about it. I can see now why they don't allow cell phones. They told me it was because they have cameras. Obviously, they don't want people to take pictures of their conditions there! Oh, and if you want to call your loved one, you have to call a phone in the hall that rings for an hour and then disconnects. No one ever picks it up and tells the patient that they have a call. So peice of advice, if someone you love does this and ends up in the hospital, don't lie to them and say..."At least now you will get the help you need" Because they won't! This country has failed horribly with the mental health system. This is the biggest hospital anywhere around our area and if it is this bad, what hope do we have?

hia, also, type in patricia kobylak on the internet and find out what a terrible and tortured existence she is in, she was at strong memorial for a few months, now she is in a nursing home.her life is non existent, she can see nobody, she has no rights, she has lost all her money, having to pay for treatment which she doesnt need, want or demand.her family dont want her, her fiancee is in despair, having also lost a lot of money trying to help her, for example, hiring lawyers etc.patricia wa sa working woman, her only complaint a thyroid problem. It appears that both strong and the nursing home in question, are refusing to treat the thyroid problem!disbelief or what!and insist on giving her dangerous drugs which disagree with pat.disbelief 2, pat was capable of managing her own affairs, she did not need nursing, at the most, she would have needed, only the thyroid treatment and a change of scene, such as a holiday break, with fresh air and good food.disbelief 3, all her life savings, going into the system, which, she doesnt need!this is evil, she should be freed immediately, given a proper home help and weaned back into society.she should be compensated for her imprisonement and given a good life.pat has no reasons to be like this, its awful, awful, awful, why cant people see, all she needs is to be released back into a caring home and allowed at least too be free again.but, dare they?perhaps they have taken away her health, through drugs, her life through imprisonement.and all of her money!perhaps they dare not release her, for fear of being seen as negligent.anyhow, please read and sign petitions on care 2.com, regarding pats plight.

My Friend has also had a similar experience to the OP while being a student living alone. At the time she wasn't able to take care of herself because of a deep depression caused by her bipolar condition and PTSD symptoms after an abusive relationship, but she was told that it was not bad enough anyways, only if she was "really" suicidal. After this terrible experience, she required constant attention from a friend that had to emergency travel to take care of her for two weeks because she wasn't able to take care of herself. Tell me how is that not completely stupid! They are supposed to know what they are doing. In addition, to add insult to injury, they made many discriminatory remarks! We are just considering possible legal options.

PEOPLE...IS THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT TRULY SUPPRISING, REMOVE YOUR' HEADS FROM THE SAND OR IN SOME CASES SOMEONES BACKSIDE .
EXAMPLE :
LAST WEEK I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM STRONG MEMORIAL / DEPARTMENT OF
NEUROLOGY-EMG TESTING, THE LETTER READ - ( ( YOU CAN EXPECT YOUR INITIAL
VISIT TO TAKE 1 1/2 TO 2 HOURS TO COMPLETE. THE PHYSICIAN WILL TAKE A
COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL HISTORY AND PERFORM A DETAILED NEUROIOGICAL
EXAM. IF FURTHER TESTING IS REQUIRED TO MAKE A DIAGNOSIS, OUR OFFICE WILL HELP TO COORDINATE THAT. ) )
THE MEDICAL ISSUES I WENT THERE FOR HAVE BEEN ONGOING FOR MORE THEN 3 YEARS AND MAY EVENTUALY CASE MY DEATH.
I ARRIVED AT STRONG HOSPITAL AT 12:45 PM FOR A 2:30 PM APOINTMENT TO
UNDERGO EMG TESTING, I WAS TAKEN INTO THE EXAMINING ROOM AT 2:42 PM, MY VITELS WERE NOT TAKEN, A YOUNG NURSE DID ASK ME QUESTIONS LIKE WHAT WAS MY HIGHT AND WEIGHT, ect. THE FIRST PART OF THE TEST WAS CONDUCTED BY A YOUNG LADY THAT SAID THAT MY FEET WOULD BE WARMED UP
PRIOR TO THE TESTING, THIS WAS NEVER DONE, MAYBE SHE FORGOT, SHE DID SEEM DISTRACTED ABOUT SOMTHING, THE ACTUAL TIME ALL HER TESTING TOOK
WAS 8 MINITES FROM THE TIME SHE ENTERED THE EXAM ROOM THE SECOND TIME. SHE PREFORMED THE FIRST PART OF THE TEST WITH VERY LOW VOLTAGE
TO ABOUT 6 TO 8 DIFFERANT SPOTS ON MY LEGS AND 1 TEST ON MY LEFT HIP AREA, SHE INFORMED ME THAT( MAYBE) SMALL NEEDLES WOULD HAVE TO BE USED AFTER THE FIRST TESTING AND TAKING MESSUREMENTS. SHE NEVER WARMED MY FEET, ALL THIS ONLY TOOK ABOUT 8 MINITES. THEN SHE WENT OUT OF THE EXAM ROOM AND RETURNED 5 MINITES LATER WITH A WOMAN THAT
ENTERDUSED HERSELF AS A DOCTOR. THIS WOMAN ASKED ME A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT MY PAIN LOCATIONS AND PAST FAMILY HEALTH HISTORY.
THIS PERSON TOOK A TOTAL OF 8 MINITES FROM THE MOMENT SHE ENTERED UNTIL SHE LEFT THE EXAME ROOM.
ONE OF THE STATEMENTS THIS ALEDGED DOCTOR SAID WAS THAT SOMETIMES
THERE ARE NO REASONS FOR AN EILLNESS AND A PATIENT JUST HAS TO FIND THE WRIGHT PAIN MEDICATION AND DOSAGE TO CONTROL THE PAIN.
I WAS TREATED LIKE I WAS A STUPID ANIMAL AND DID'NT DESERVE HUMAN TREATMENT,
I WAS NOT IN A POSSITION TO COMPLAIN, I HAD NO ONE THERE AT MY SIDE FOR
A WITNESS AND IF I HAD QUESTIONED THE MEDICAL STAFF'S PERFORMENCE
AT VERY LEST THE GOOD DOCTOR WOULD HAVE MADE A COMMENT IN MY MEDICAL FILE THAT I DISPLAYED HOSTILITY OR WORST HAD SECURITY CALLED
AND MAYBE ENDED UP IN THE CITY JAIL AND I CAN'T AFFORD BAIL OR A TTORNEY.
THIS IS THE TYPE OF ### I HAVE BEEN FACING FROM THE MEDICAL WORLD FOR
ATLEST THE PAST 4 YEARS.
I ASK EVERY PERSON OUT THERE, CAN YOU REALY WONDER WHY SO MANY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WANT TO REMOVE THIS COUNTRY LIKE A( GOD DOCTOR )
REMOVES A CANCER.
IN MOST CASES THE PEOPLE THAT HOLD OTHERS LIFES IN THEIR HANDS JUST CAN'T BE TRUSTED.

I completely understand. This is common practice in many hospitals. They just want the problem that they don't know how to handle to just go away. Sending you to a mental ward is the fastest easiest way to make the problem go away for them. Once you are in the ward the staff treats everyone the same whether you truly need to be there or just need someone to talk to, a shoulder to lean on. They don't care about you. I am so sorry your friend is going through this. It is life changing and not in a good way. The fear that comes out of this experience stays with that person forever. They loose trust and will place a wall around themselves to protect their sanity. If the staff would take a step back and treat each person admitted as an individual with different problems than the last person than maybe patients would have better things to say.

I would not have even given this hospital a one star had to in order to write a review. Went to their er for help physically and emotionally.Emergency room was FILTHY & I mean Filthy. I am born in Saint Mary`s Hospital Rochester 1957, I was in the strong hospital emergency room today 3/23/2016 after not being seen by them for over 10 years. They have not changed they only have gotten worse...there was so much disgusting crud on the medical equipment in the er room I was in. I do not think they should ever be considered an option for anybody/somebody`s needs when looking for Medical/ Mental quality, honest, ethical oath abiding care, compassionate care you will not find any of these qualities in Strong / Galisano Hospital. I strongly urge and warn you not to go to this Hospital! Especially if you are of God as they are Diabolical and have been this way for a very very long time. The Very Best Hospital in Rochester New York 14 was Genesee Hospital who were Great way Before Strong ever would have maybe been given an after thought well as the saying goes Dear Genesee Hospital only the GOOD DIE YOUNG. I ESPECIALLY URGE YOU NOT TO GO TO THE PSYCHE Department Absolutely Deplorable Unprofessional is an under statement Arkham Asylum is more progressive and professional than strong Hospital/Galisano PSYCHE dept the worst a big ZERO.The social workers also should be recalled. If you are very sick and value your life DO NOT GO TO THIS DIPLORABLE FILTHY HOSPITAL..THERE IS WAY BETTER HOSPITALS. In my time today there, many staff members agreed to what I have written.SHAME ON YOU STRONG/GALISANO HOSPITAL!
READ Cyril Quinn REVIEW I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THIS PLACE IS TRUE TERRIBLE!I WILL SAY REBECCA ER NURSE FROMBATAVIA STELLAR GREAT, XRAY TECH. KEN, CARLOS AND THE MAN WHO TRANSPORTED ME TO XRAY ALL GREAT!STRONG/GALIASANO HOSPTAL U R A DISGRACE YOU HAVE MADE ROCHESTER NEW YORK 14 A WORSE PLACE JUST LIKE U U of R BOUGHT OUT HOSPITALS I HOPE TO LIVE TO SEE YOU BOUGHT OUT!
