My daughter was admitted with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. I was told the admission would take 1 hr then I would have to leave.
She was very scared and needed to talk to her family. She was not allowed contact with the outside world for the first 72 hrs. After that she only had 10 mins of phone time a day. After 48 hrs I went back and saw the terrible conditions my daughter was in. We were misled. According to the website and admission clerk, the residents are able to talk to family a few times a day. Each resident is told they will go through the 12 Step program, whether they have a drug issue or not. Most of the girls have drug or eating disorders, but they are not seperated. They all get the same poor treatment. The psychiatrist sees the girls for 10min for the inital visit. The girls fight with each other constantly and many have no family contact.
My daughter was lucky, I asked many questions and my daughter was able to stand up to the staff. We removed her after 3 days. Do not put your daughter her. Keep her with you, there are many out patient facilities that will not subject her to abuse.

Please note, although this does not "constitute abuse", it clearly violates the pts rights. Under the State of Illinois- Rights of Individual Receiving Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Services, it is clearly outlined that the pt has the right to communicate with other people in private, without obstruction, or censorship by the staff... ? Were these 10 min monitored by staff in an enclosed area? If so, I would def report this to the State of Illinois.

I went to TK this past summer & loved it! It saved my life!
I was there for numerous things. It changed me to become a better person! I'm a much healthier person today because of my trearnt at Timberline Knolls. Was your daughter on the adolescent lodge, or adult lodge? How old was she? It's a rough first week there, I'll admit that! I don't do transition well at all! The reason you're not allowed to have communication with the real world is because they want you to focus on adjusting to things & you have a lot to learn. My first week there, I was a mess. The second week came around, I was adjusting more & more & realizing that there's other people who have the same issues as I do. It helped to talk to them & relate. 3 days aren't enough to get the feel of things... At least in my mind. I speak from my experience. I was there for 6 weeks. I would've been there for a bit longer, but my insurance dropped me. I'm continuing therapy at home. It's an excellent place to go for treatment. For phone calls you sit in an area with one staff member, just to answer the phones & keep track of things! You do have privacy. I loved TK! I suggest it to anyone in need of treatment.

My daughter has been there almost six weeks and has made no improvement. I have emailed them called and left several messages and no one will return my calls. Now they have her so medicated with medicine that she doesn't even need according to her diagnosis they gave. I am not happy with timberland knolls what so ever. Looking for another facility to take her to.

I think the facility needs to be closed down. They made my daughter worse. The staff members are rude and do NOT know what they are doing half the time. They just want to take your money and hock your house. When your insurance runs out they kick you out!

Where do I start ...I went in for PTSD. It turned out that this place reTraumatized me. I was there for 3 weeks and was going so I could get intense therapy for my Anxiety. My insurance cut me. I talked to my therapist to leave the night before. She was fine with it. When I was telling the other patients that my insurance cut me and I was leave that night, the nurse walk by and stated your not leave tell tomorrow. I said no I'm leaving tonight. She said no your not. I said then I'm leave AMA. They would not let me sign my self out. I was so upset. They kept telling me that you either say or go to the hospital. I told them you have no reason to send me to the hospital. I was not a harm to anyone or my self. I was on the phone with my wife and after hours of calling different people the nurse said you either stay or go to the hospital. I told them they where violating my rights. I stated that you can't just send people to the hospital because they want to leave. They did when I got there the doctor laught at the petition. The Phycitrist stated because TK did a pentition I had to go back to TK. They made up a diagnosis to send me to the hospital. When I talked to the doctor the next day he stated that it was a miscommunication. Also when I got back they gave up my bed and had me sleep in a office where they put in and extra bed. It was bad. I was up all night throwing up because I was so up set. I contacted a lawyer. Also I didn't get the treatment that I expected. I asked for a new therapist two weeks in and my therapist disregard my request. Just be aware if you sign yourself in you can't sign yourself out. Every time someone asked for a 72 hour discharge they got the run around.

My name is ***. My daughter is at Timberline Knolls, a facility licensed under SUPR. She was admitted for care regarding her OCD symptoms and suicide attempt. I made it clear she does not have an eating disorder, nor an addiction issue. They assured me that they were well suited for handling her OCD.

While there, she ended up in the ER three times within the same week, followed by admittance to Bolingbrook Hospital. When M first arrived at TK on April 16th, she was on one psychiatric medication. Within a span of 16 days, three more psychiatric medications were added. She was not informed of the changes in medications. She just received the new meds from the nurse and was told she could refuse them when she asked what they were. Further, she did not receive any written information regarding the side effects of the medication provided. It turned out that the side effects of more than one of the psychiatric medications included urinary retention.

On April 29, my daughter, M, informed the nurse that she was unable to urinate. She had been trying all day and was in terrible pain. She went to the ER. They discovered she had a UTI. They gave her medicine for the UTI, as well as medication to help her bladder relax, then sent her home after she urinated. The next day, Dr. B at TK looked at some lab results and saw that M didn't have white blood cells in her urine. She pumped her full of antibiotics and gave her the UTI medication, but did not discuss her medications or look into possible alternate causes for the urinary retention. By the next morning, M still wasn’t urinating well and was in horrible pain. She was again sent to the ER where they gave her something to relax her bladder. The infection for the UTI was decreasing, but she couldn't urinate on her own. She was pumped full of fluid and sent back to TK. By 3 am she was back at the hospital and this time, was given a catheter.
She was admitted later that day, May 4th, and spoke with a Urologist. The Urologist, Dr. B, told her she was very lucky her bladder hadn't burst. He told her that urinary retention was a side effect of the four psychiatric medications she was on. He also confided that she was not the only TK patient he had seen for that very reason.
When I called to talk to Dr. B about the lack of oversight regarding medication and monitoring for side effects, she told me that she didn't prescribe the psychiatric medication. Her psychiatrist, Dr. D, did. I asked to speak with him and she said she "didn't control his schedule" so she couldn't guarantee he would get back to me. She went on to say that patients who are part of the facility are there for severe mental problems and should expect to be medicated.
So, these are my concerns -
1. Medicating clients without their informed consent is against the Illinois state code for mental health practice
2. Not informing a patient in writing regarding possible side effects for psychiatric medications is not in compliance with state code
3. Failing to monitor patients for possible side effects is negligent.
4. Adding 3 medications within the course of two weeks is dangerous at best.

It is my wish that Timberline Knolls be investigated for failure to comply with state law in regards to medical practice and patient informed consent.
