I have a 2004 BMW Z4 Roadster that has 55, 00 miles on it and it has been a piece of junk since day 1. I have had nothing but problems out of this car and it's the fifth BMW that I've owned. I owned 3 of the 5-series, which were great cars, and also the X3 SUV, however it was totaled in a head on collision with a drunk driver within a year of my purchasing it. All of my other BMW's have been great cars and I've never had any problems with BMW as far as the service goes. Well, for those of you considering the purchase of a Z4, keep in mind that you may just routinely let the top down on a nice day and have the back window shatter into a million pieces and be less than 5, 000 mi. out of warranty and BMW tells you that it is your problem. This may be more understandable if it wasn't just a routine let down of the top, but I let it down and I heard a very loud pop, then I heard all of the glass breaking. This will be the last BMW I own unless BMW makes it right, which thus far they have not agreed to do so. I am furious about this, because my insurance refuses to pay for it saying that it is a mfg. defect and that it is BMW's responsibility to stand behind their product; BMW is not standing behind their product and these windows are glass, supposedly shatter-proof, and even with a defroster across it it broke into a million pieces and this window is heat-sealed into the convertible top from the factory, so the whole top has to be replaced, which I've been informed is $4, 000 which they are asking me to pay. I will update this posting if BMW decides to do the right thing, but thus far, I wouldn't suggest buying a BMW, because that was the whole reason I bought a high-end performance vehicle, because they stand behind what they build. This is a garage kept car, and has been maintained on it's correct schedule and I have had the following problems out of it, not to mention it looks like a 94' Kia on the inside that someone has completely abused when it has been cleaned and maintained as a BMW should be with BMW cleaning products and has always been serviced by the dealer, but the following has gone wrong with this car since it's purchase:
-The backs of the seats have completely fallen off and are just laying behind the seats (which they have never bothered to fix during it's many times (in the BMW Service Center)
-The cigarette lighter doesn't work and never has, so I can't charge a phone in this car and have informed them multiple times that this was a problem (at the BMW Service Center)
-The cup holders in the car have been broken 4 0r 5 times and not from abuse; they were put in a stupid place to begin with, but I've asked for them to be fixed (again at BMW Svc Center)
-The leather is coming loose from the door panels due to poor stitching (which the BMW Service Center has been notified of, and haven't bothered to even take a look at it)
-The glove compartment does not work (again BMW was aware of this and never bothered to fix it at their Authorized Service Center)
-The safety belt on the driver''s side will not retract and in a car that small, could cause a serious safety issue if the vehicle were to be in an accident- also notified Auth. BMW Svc Center - no solution)
- Last month I had to pay them $1, 000 because of something having to do with the oil filter - An Authorized BMW Service Center is the only mechanics ever to service/touch this car, but it was fixed by 2p the same day and they had no problem charging $1, 000 for the repair of something that obviously THEY messed up, because no one else has ever worked on this vehicle.
-Now, routine use of the top causes the rear window to break out and they want to place the blame on me... (Also compliments of my local Authorized BMW Service Center)
I can see now why everyone is switching to Audi, because BMW sure isn't standing behind their cars, and yes they may maintenance your vehicle for 50, 000 miles, but BUYER BEWARE - After your warranty and that 50, 000 miles is up, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN... From the way they've handled this - It seems that they'll stand behind everything up to that 50, 000 miles, but 5, 000 miles after the warranty is up, they don't care if the car explodes in the parking lot... It's no longer their problem.. Like I said, I'll revise this post if BMW decides to stand behind their product, especially for someone who has been so loyal to their brand and even bought company cars made by BMW, but that is over unless BMW bucks up and does what is right, because I don't have $4, 000 to spend having the top replaced and how do I know they won't replace it and the same thing will happen as soon as I leave the dealership, because they say that the top is operating normally and there is no problems, so I'm just supposed to trust their work now and I'm supposed to believe they'll stand behind their work. I don't believe so and BMW - I THINK IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO STAND UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING, OTHERWISE EVERYONE WHO IS THINKING OF BUYING A Z4 WILL READ THIS POST, BECAUSE YOUR POSITION IS WRONG; YOU KNOW IT, and YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND UNTIL YOU DO, EXPECT TO SEE A GREAT DEAL MORE OF THESE POSTINGS, BECAUSE WHO WOULD WANT A CAR LIKE THIS? ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU PAY OVER $40, 000 FOR A CAR THAT YOU WON'T STAND BEHIND SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS 5, 000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY? THAT'S CUSTOMER NO-SERVICE IF YOU ASK ME AND I BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO WOULD AGREE WITH ME ON THIS!
