During the COVID-19 Pandemic, I am shopping for my household and for my elderly parents. Today, I went in and Rita at the register told me that she cannot sell me two boxes of eggs, she said we could go to another register, she could not sell us two boxes. We explained that we are shopping for parents in another household and for our household and she did not care. We did not purchase a huge amount of food, just what needed for two households. One of us charged the food and another one of our family members stood in line for eggs. I am Latina and she is Asian. While in line the Asian family members herd the Rita speaking to Dana about the issue and called her a "cheater", even after we explained that we are shopping for two households. It was hard to hear a white woman, call women of color cheater, and not care that we are shopping for two households, as our Mayor has explained that elderly should not be going out at all. I found Rita and Dana's comments and judgement extremely racist and rude, and frankly in poor leadership in time of crisis. This could have been explained to us without judgement and Rita should not have suggested that one of us go in another register. These are the people representing your store, and frankly, this bad customer service will make me never come back to this store. For her to suggest that we go in another register and call us a cheater, is really a judgement for herself, she suggested we go to another register because we were shopping for other family members. I hope you please talk to your cashiers about how to treat people of color, to behave like leaders in a crisis, and to please abide by the rules without judgement. Also, there was no sings by the eggs telling us to buy only one per household — may instruct that store to have signs next to those items, to have better signs over all and to get themselves together as leaders. If they cannot handle it other people are desperate for work and want to work. It was such a disturbing visit that it has convinced me, after this and other racists incidents at this store over the years, that I will not shop here anymore.
Please respond to me with the outcome of this, please know I am also reporting this racist incident against an Asian customer wherever I can in the county. So much to unpack, but no crisis should allow for any person to racist against a customer.
Vons - What is the point of having a register open if no one is going to check and see if anyone is waiting to be helped?
Today, I went to VONS at 6 am and grabbed a single item to purchase. I went to the only cash register that was open and it was not occupied. I figured since it was so early they were probably restocking and would be by to help me in a minute or two. I stood there for ten minutes and not a single person came by. What is the point of having a register open if no one is going to check and see if anyone is waiting to be helped? I walked out without purchasing my item and no one seemed to notice that I was simply leaving the store after waiting at a register for ten minutes.
