A good while back when I was getting grocery pick up orders in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic it was during a rainy day. (Nothing severe, just typical rain). When I pulled into the parking spot to pick-up my grocery order, the employee requested that I drive up to the front row of the store so she didn't have to get wet in the rain. She acted like the rain was going to kill her or something. I drove to the front of the store and only a handicapped space was available so I didn't park there because I didn't want a parking ticket. So I drove to the regular parking lot just about 20 yards from the front row spots. I figured she could find my car because I told her the description of my car. I wait 10 minutes and decide to call back the store. She told me I was supposed to park in the handicapped space. I told her I didn't do that because I didn't want to risk getting a parking ticket. She did bring out the groceries but she practically threw them in the trunk because she was so afraid of a little rain getting her wet. This is just one of the many examples I can think of in Vons that employees think of their own convenience and needs first before the customer. It wouldn't hurt her to be out in the rain 2 minutes to conscientiously put the groceries in back of my car thoughtfully. Even if she did get a little wet, in an hour or two her clothes would dry anyway.
Desired outcome: Hire and train employees who put customer needs first.
On 6/16/23 in the afternoon me and my family went shopping at Vons in Paso Robles. Like many other Vons I have been to, none of the employees on the floor ask if you are finding everything okay when you are just a few feet away from them. They tend to ignore you or look at you like you are a rack of yard tools at Sears or something.
The cashier we had at least did greet us, even though it was just a simple "hello". The cashier looked dejected the whole time and acted like she could care less about being there. There was no courtesy clerks available and the cashier did not offer to bag our items. You would think with how high the minimum wage is in California nowadays, workers in food and retail would be more reasonably engaged in their jobs and more focused on customer service.
Vons - pricing structure
Promotional sign at hot deli offers 8 piece ckicken and 4 hawaiian rolls for $5.99. I ordered it knowing the paired deal would be more as I do not have a club card. The sticker on the chicken carton said $7.99. It priced out at the register as $10.60. Customer service manager could not understand that the sign advertised a paired deal. The sign did not explain that without a Vons card the paired deal does not exist. He didn't get it. To him this deception is normal. Not wanting to waste the food, I relented and paid the $10.60. As I am leaving I see the security guard crouched down behind me and spring back up when our eyes met.
The corporate suits at Vons seem to have lost touch with what what many retail establishments know to be honest practice. Dishonesty may not have been the objective, but clarity and what is known to be common sense is obviously lacking. This is not the first time I have had an uncomfortable experience at this store. Previous unpleasant experiences include negotiating filthy bathrooms with empty paper towel dispensers.
Vons is the highest priced store in the area. Perhaps you could be sure that advertising is accurate and complete and that those responsible for basic maintenance are doing their jobs.
I will be looking for changes at this store as I decide on where else I may want to shop.
