Vons - discrimination

April 12 approximately 7:30 pm
I entered into the store accompanied by my nephew and went to buy alcohol for myself and my mother in law as well as a bottle of juice. My nephew is 13 years old and only accompanied me into the store to be with me. I was also with my sister in law and she remained in the car since I only had 2 masks available to use and she did not have a mask to enter into the store, since that is now a new ‘policy'. I waited in line to purchase my items and when I got to the register the cashier, Vanessa, rang up my 2 bottles of alcohol and proceeded to ask for our IDs. I explained to her that it is just my ID since my nephew was underage. She told me that she was unable to sell me the alcohol due to the fact that my nephew was with me and since he was underage she needed everyone's ID in my party. Since my sister in law was in the car I sent my nephew to the car to wait and my sister in law came into the store and showed her ID and explained that we were the only people buying the alcohol. The cashier was very rude and proceeded to call her manager over and tell us that they need to see everyone's ID in the party to sell the alcohol. My nephew is African American and looks a lot older than he actually is. We told the cashier and the manager that information and they continued to argue with us that "the policy of vons is that they need everyone's ID in the party especially since they are in the college area" even though my nephew was underage. I am a white 26 year old woman with a 13 year old nephew and we were told that our age was too close together for them to sell me alcohol. This made no sense to me or my sister in law who both have IDs and willingly showed them. The manager then told the cashier to sell us the alcohol but both me and my sister in law both had to remove our masks for the cameras. I do not understand how we were discriminated against when we willingly presented all of our IDs and had to send a minor to sit in the car due to the fact he could not join us in the store because he didn't have an ID. My nephew feels like he was discriminated against due to the color of his skin and because he looks older. To know that a person is underage accompanying a family member buying alcohol and even they are required to show ID is ridiculous. It was humiliating to have to take off my mask in the middle of the store especially with the covid-19 pandemic going on and possibly being exposed to the virus. I will never be returning to Vons due to how we were treated.
