Les Schwab Tire Center - battery installation and customer service

I went to the Les Schwab in Dallas, Oregon to purchase a new battery for my KIA van. After installation the salesman that put the battery in showed me a nut and bolt that he broke after trying to get the nut off of the bolt. I did not think anything about it. I've put in battery cables myself in the past. The following Monday I went to KIA to get my vehicle serviced and told the service manager what had happened at Les Schwab. He looked at the battery and the part that was broken was fixed to the battery terminal that has sensors in it. He said that to replace it the cost alone would be $218.90. That is not including the installation fee.

On Tuesday I went back to Les Schwab and asked for the manager. I told him what the service manager at KIA had told me about the cost. He replied that it was not their fault. The technician that installed it said that when he tried to get the nut off it snapped the bolt. I asked him if there was anything that they can do to help me. He kept saying that it wasn't there fault. I was hoping that he would offer a suggestion. He would not even come out and look at the van.

My service over the years has always been positive with Les Schwab. However, this is the worst customer service I have ever received.

I would appreciate a reply to this message.

Seems like there are two "schools of experience" with Schwab service... One is the on-the-road folks who incur a problem and just wanna "keep moving" so anything they need to that end at any price makes Schwab their 5 - star company. And then there's the everyday, probably local Joe or Jane who usually take care of their own issues, but occasionally need something special - a battery or alignment or a hub or something that they assume will be relatively easier for a "specialist"...
The problem is - many times, these people are NOT the specialists we assume they are, and we end up not only paying bigger bucks than we imagined, but also getting crummy service too... That becomes a problem when they are the only business in our small towns Schwab is usually located in.
The reality is - These are TIRE people. And to that end, yes, they are polite generally, and small town tire shops are low pressure and friendly.. BUT if you think that just because they are outfitted with an alignment bay and they sell batteries, etc that they are automatically proficient in those areas - well...GOOD LUCK. The alignment bay is all about rolling cars in and out as fast and profitable as possible. The young people installing batteries will not do any more than is absolutely necessary to fit the battery into the hole. If the cable ends are shot or corroded or rusted beyond usability, they will very likely not see that as their job to take care of. In fact, those areas may be the reason for your electrical problem in the first place! And you will still have the same issue with a nice shiny $150 battery. When people start taking responsibility for their own issues and interactions with respect to their vehicles, they will rely "Les" on people who have no more ability at repairing their issues than they themselves have! Notice I didn't cite a particular issue with LS but I've had several... I just no longer want to get a reply like "OH! I'm SO SORRY you had a problem! Please let us know how we can take care of it!" When in fact it was sloppiness and inattention to the problem that caused the issues in the first place!
