I had State Farm renters insurance on my apartment when I was attending college in Colorado Springs I paid on time and always locked my doors and windows to keep out possible intruders. One night after getting into a fight with my girlfriend I had gone out to drive and calm my mind I was gone roughly 24 hours total and when I came home my apartment door had been pried open and their were obvious marks on both doors and the windows. My laptop I use for school and my desktop I had as well as my TV one of my couches and pretty much everything I had other than my bed were stolen I immediately contacted police and filled out the report I didn't even think about insurance covering it until my leasing office reminded me that theft is covered by renters insurance. So I call state farm and provide them with all the information including serial numbers for the items I had them for and I gave them values lower than the actual value of all of my things because of the age of some of them. I then get a call from some rude claims adjuster asking for receipts for things I purchased new and used both I had had them for well over 5 months and honestly didn't know I needed to keep the receipts when I explained I didn't have them she screamed at me and told me I was irresponsible and all of this ###(I am a 21 year old college student living alone for the first time) she hangs up on me and the next day I get a call from the state farm special claims adjuster(this one was rather polite) she explained she needed to come out and view my apartment I agreed and she came out and at first everything was pleasant and then she starts interrogating me asking me where I was that day(nearly 2 months later) I gave her the best answers I could although at first I told her I was at a show that night because I had mixed it up with another night. Either way she left and said I should hear something in 3 weeks I had to fill out this paper and go get it notarized which cost money from MY pocket the paper I was given was extremely confusing and NO ONE from state farm was willing to help me figure it out. I sent it in and got another letter 2 months from then saying they hadn't received the last one I again fill the stupid thing out and have it notarized at my expense mail it in and then 3 more months later I was sent a letter saying they were denying my claim and I am basically out the $10, 000.00 I wanted(the actual value was closer to 26, 000 but as I said I took value away for age and some of the items being purchased used) to replace my property. I have photos of most of the property and the recovery disk for the two computers as well as a manual for the television that was stolen and EVEN-THOUGH one of my items was recovered from a store where it had been pawned by someone else they said I did not own that stuff and basically threatened to charge me with insurance fraud if I didn't just take it up the ### from them. I got a letter one month later canceling my policy and a refund of 81.00. I doubt state farm will ever make this right and I think everyone deserves to know the truth about this horrible company. Due to the denial of my claim they lost both of my grandparents(around 40 policies alone), my parents(another 15 policies), and many of my friends as customers. I don't think I can do anything to get the compensation I deserve but atleast I can put the word out about this HORRIBLE company. Isn't paying for protection and then having it denied when you need it kind of like what the mafia used to do?

DO NOT EVER get renters insurance with State Farm! It's a scam and they won't pay a claim. They want receipts for everything you own. Who really keeps all receipts? Also, pictures are of no use, as I've always been told to take pictures and you will be ok. Not so with State Farm. They are rude, nasty and are just there to collect your monthly premium that gives you absolutely NO protection. It's a scam people! Please don't fall for it. I'm looking for another company pronto! Don't walk away...RUN! I had State Farm many years ago and was never treated so poorly. I've had this policy for 5 years that includes 2 cars and renters insurance. Never a late payment. Not a single claim. I make one renters insurance claim for $4000 and they treat me like I'm a lying criminal. Pictures don't matter people! Keep all your receipts and don't EVER use State Farm!
Thank you so much for your comments. I will pass this to a relative who has State Farm. I just told my sister NOT to get renter's insurance, at a minimum, and she may switch out her car insurance.

Last September my girlfriend and I moved into an old apartment building in Brooklyn and after making the place look nice and dealing with a near miss from a broken radiator we decided to get renters insurance. We put the word out on Facebook, checked sites like this and asked around. We decided to go with State Farm renters insurance.
The policy we got was $180 per year, which was about average. They specialized in apartment renters insurance so it seemed like the smartest choice.
I am a musician and I have a small music production room on the other end of the apartment from the bedroom. It is where I spend most of my time and do my work.
Early Wednesday morning my girlfriend woke me up, her words were "you are not going to like this".
My little music studio was a disaster. During the night water must have filled up the ceiling and burst through making a hole and blowing the glass light fixture out of the ceiling shattering it on the desk below along with lots of nasty dirty water, debris and plaster. The brown water was all over my computer, it had flowed down the wall from a hole in the ceiling and filled up a tube pre amp an acoustic bass guitar and synthesizer my equipment was all messed up. The only comfort I had was as I went through all my jacked up stuff was that it was covered by my State Farm renters insurance. We took pictures and I got to work cleaning up and trying to dry things out. My girlfriend was amazing, she worked with me all morning cleaning and picking up glass, and getting things so that they were clean enough they could be removed from the room and into the bedroom at the other end of the house.
I could not work so I just cleaned for the next two days. Now the room stinks, and the whole apartment smells like sewage. We bought a dehumidifier which we hope will help.
The only thing that was getting me through all this was the idea that State Farm would help me get back to where I was.
After a long phone call, State Farm said it was not covered, none if it! They said that whoever fixed the roof improperly was liable.
I have this phrase stuck in my head "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." and it makes the whole mess so much more painful to deal with.
Progressive tied not to pay for a stolen motorcycle claiming it was suspicious that two motorcycle got stole from the garage at the same time. Lol. Why would some just take one when they can have to. After a year of calling and complaining I called a lawyer and they paid three days later
Carla Scotten of State Farm Renters has been investigating my claim since November and just as you said, they interrogate you and tell you that you need to get things notarized. They asked me to itemize and list the replacement value of my property. In addition, they want the receipts for everything that I am missing. I hired Mo's Moving to move me from 3 blocks down the street and they kept 1/2 of my property on their truck overnight. They say they came only once but they actually came to my old unit 3 times on three different days.
State Farm knows that I am a 62 year old woman and there is no way in the world that I can dig up all of these receipts and just hand them over to them. They are even asking for my bank records, my business records, and anything to do with my finances. I never expected to be robbed. I didn't want to take out renter's insurance, but my unit told me it was a must. I had another company prior to them and never made a claim. They aren't going after the movers, they are actually making me feel like I took my own property! It is crazy!
The woman who came out took pictures of everything in my unit, but she did not turn all of the pictures in. What she turned in were pictures of a ransacked storage unit (which I believe they did), trash bags, my closet room in my apartment and a few pieces of costume jewelry. I also gave them photos of my furs, my gold jewelry, and my lingerie, tubs of my shoes, shelves of my handbags. All of my kitchen items were stolen, more than 1/2 of my linen, all of my black, brown, and navy dresses. A ton of other things.
I owned two shops in my life. I am a collector of everything you can name. I am an educated woman, a former commercial model, a former teacher.
Claim status unknown. It is now March 2011. This happened in November 2011. Where is the justice? This is a fraudulent company. I have spent over $2, 000 trying to replace most of these things, I am out of a lot of money and a lot of memories. Many of my items were gifts from personal friends.
