American Home Shield [AHS] - Furnace repair

We called American home shield on 10-30-2022 and reported our furnace had failed. We received no response for the following three days and in the meantime we called two other local HVAC contractors to seek assistance.

On the third day we received a call that a technician was in route from Chronister in Cedar Rapids.

The technician and an apprentice arrive and said they had to order parts and left. They were driving an unmarked red van and didn’t leave any paperwork to indicate the parts or leave a card for follow up call.

They came back a few days later installed the parts and proclaimed the furnace was working.

My husband came home later and checked the work and found the fresh air exhaust fan was not connected at two locations and a burner plate was left off leaving the flames exposed to the interior of the furnace. My husband reattached all required parts to make the system safe again and called Chronister to complain bout the shoddy work.

Some time later the same technician returned without the apprentice and attempted to remove the jets for better flame. He broke the right jet and called Chronister to report the furnace was in need of replacement, stating it would be replaced in 7-10 days. My husband called me and asked me to purchase a 1/8 NPT tap to repair the furnace jet.

Andrew from Chronister provided two new jets but quickly left without assistance in the repair needed leaving the furnace inoperable. My husband used the new tap to repair the broken pipe threads and installed the new gas jets.

The flames of both burners were bright yellow orange indicating the were the wrong diameter. My husband removed the jets and they were not.055in but.078 in ID. My husband had to repair the broken jet threads also with a 1/8 NPT die to reinstall it and the other old jet to make the furnace work.

We wanted a working furnace and called a local company again. They arrived in less than two hours and inspected everything and adjusted gas pressure to ensure the system worked properly but didn’t change anything or make further changes or repairs.

We were assigned [protected] as a dispatch number but fired Chronister for the shoddy work. American Home Shield has employee’s who can’t be understood and never let us speak to a manager or supervisor so there is always a communication issue.

Desired outcome: We want the furnace to run and we have yet to get a proper response from AHS

American Home Shield [AHS] - Faucets and valve replacement

I have had an account with you for more maybe 15 years. My faucets were not the most expensive ones on the market (it is a mobile home), and they are more than 22 years old. I am being told you are not covering because this is not normal wear and tear but abuse. I have lived in the same home for 23 years and I can tell you there is was no abuse. This is a cheap way to get out of paying.

June 1, 2022

Desired outcome: I want these fixed and replaced

American Home Shield [AHS] - Gas leak

On monday, march 14, 2016, I called to request repair on my gas line because of leakage. A plumbing company came out. After looking over the job, they talked to ahs and agreed that my portion would be $950.00. They worked tuesday and wednesday and said they could not find the leak, but would come back thursday with a stronger air pump. They said they needed the check for $950 to complete the work. They never came back. I called the next day and was told that due to a shift in the soil it would cost me $4, 200. I became suspicious and contacted the better business bureau and found on line that this is what they do. They have companies to come out and start a project and not finish it, but come up with a ridiculous price so that ahs will not pay and the homeowner will have to pay. They sent me three letters saying that the job was not covered, so I got another company to come out and they did the repairs for $1.080.00. I did stop payment on the check for $950.00. But I think that these companies need to be exposed for the scams they play. As a result, I was without heat and hot water for 10days. I am a 78 year old senior citizen. I have pictures of the way they left my house.

American Home Shield [AHS] - Not really insurance but a fraud

When we had a plumbing leak we called our insurance company(American Home Shield) they sent out their plumbing company (RiteAway Plumbing Services) We were told that AHS would pay only
$1, 000. for the job since the leak was under the slab(this agreed with the policy) The representatives from RiteAway told us that the job would cost $3, 500. and that AHS would pay the first $1, 000. leaving us with a bill of $2, 500. This was for a four hour job with less than $200. in materials. I called AHS to complain and was told that I could get my our plumber but they would still only pay $1, 000. I had the job completed for $1, 200. and since received a letter from AHS denying any coverage at all.
The job was covered if we paid $2, 500. for a $1, 200. job. These are crooks who take advantage of people who are not familiar with what certain jobs should cost.
I have since looked on line and found numberous similar complaints.

If AHS company tries to send anyone to your home, always look them up the BBB.org. Rite-A-Way Services has an F on the site.

Absolute ripoff! Every time a technician comes, collects $55 for a visit, and finds a reeason to do nothing. electrical broke - he found something not up to the code (and what house doesn't have something not up to the code)? refrigerator broke - ice maker is not covered. garage opener broke - garage door is too heavy and only if i pay technician $500 it will magically become ok.
