On September 7 at around 6:15 pm CST.
I was witness to a very disturbing interaction between an Employee and customer at the register.
I had walked into the store to make a quick purchase and was standing at the end of a in a line of approximately 6 people for the register. At which point the employee rather loudly, rudely and uncomfortably started announcing to the customer
stating " I cannot understand you" multiple times. Finally the person next to her announced the amount she was trying to communicate to the employee ( I'm assuming for prepayment on her gas purchase). After the amount was ascertained and payed the employee made reference very rudely and again loud enough for anyone in the store to hear something to the effect that We Speak English here! My heart went out to the poor woman being so humiliated. At this point I was so uncomfortable and upset that I left the store without my purchase and vowed never to return to this establishment. On walking out the woman was just behind me and I apologize to her for the employees behavior at which time she started to cry. She was very upset and embarrassed.
I spoke with the woman for some time and told her it was my intention to place a complaint. She also stated that she wanted to place a complaint and I gave her my number as a witness.
It was suggested by another that it would be best to go back and ask the employee of the Circle K for his supervisors number to place a complaint. I then went back into the store and asked the employee for his supervisors number. He started writing the number down and asked if I might say why I was asking. I told him that I had witnessed his interaction with the lady and was very disturbed by his treatment of this customer. He then refused me the number and told me that I would have to return the next day to speak with his supervisor. I then told him I would contact corporate instead. After leaving the store the woman was still outside parked in her car and told me she left so quickly that she had forgotten to get her receipt but was uncomfortable returning. I told her I would accompany her back in. I walked back in with her and she requested her receipt. The man recognizing her apologized stating his reasoning for snapping at her was due to the fact he didn't understand her.
He also snapped at me and told me to leave. At which point I said I would help if he didn't understand what she was saying. Mind you this entire time this woman was Speaking In English! Including all of my conversations with her. Yes she did speak with a Spanish accent but everything she said was perfectly understandable to me. I found this gentleman/ employees behavior to be very condescending and bigoted to both myself an the the woman this interaction took place with.
I have never in my 60 yrs of life put in a complaint to a business and always attempt to look for the goodness in people rather than the negative. I could not in good conscious ignore this mans rude and prejudice attitude to another human being.
A few points:
Would he have done the same if this was not a visibly Hispanic woman?
How would he handle this if a person was disabled,
Deaf, speech impediment?
Would he have reacted the same if the person he did not understand was of a more Caucasian ethnicity?
Why when this woman returned for her receipt did he amazingly understand everything she was saying to her ?
Why would this gentleman speak so loudly to express his lack of understanding this woman when volume of his voice across the entire store could be heard make a difference ? His point/ volume only served to humiliate and degrade her.
