On 4/17/19 around 12:30p, I visit the Vons Market located at 475 E. Windmill Lane. I eventually made my way to the butcher area where I was assisted by a woman whos name I did not notice. I asked for 1/2 pound of bacon. At the time I spoke to her, she was stuffing chicken breast, I assume to be displayed in the glass case. The employee was not wearing gloves but went directly from the raw chicken, put gloves on and started handling the bacon. For a second I was in disbelief and I did a second look to see that she pulled the gloves out of the box with her chicken hands without washing. I immediately told he that I didn't want it and had to tell her why. She stated she was sorry. When I pressed about food safety and cross contamination, she replied that she had something on her mind. I asked to speak to her supervisor and a gentleman came out. I didn't get his name either but he appeared to be the main butcher, large man with an apron and a ball cap. When he asked how he could help me I replied that he must already know as he was listening to my conversation with Chicken Hands. He offered to assist me but said so in an unapologetic way, with what seemed like attitude. Not wanting his assistance I asked for his supervisor. Almost immediately a woman came out I can only assume to be the store director or manager. She apologized and asked if she could get me something else. I told her I didn't want anything and she seemed surprised. She offered again and added that it was "on the house". I declined and told her I wouldn't want anything as I can not be sure that the rest of the items in that area were treated in the same unsafe manner.
I write this not in attempt to get anyone in trouble but rather inform you of the goings on in the store. This as you are aware is a serious issue and could eventually cause serious illness or worse. I do not believe this person was poorly trained, but rather lazy. These type of issues are the very basics or beginnings of food safety.
I cant help but wonder if the bacon she handled was removed and disposed of? The box of gloves should also be disposed of but I bet they weren't. This type of health violation occurred with two mangers or supervisor right next to her and was only noticed because I brought it up. I felt she trying to bribed me to go away, Instead of the immediate emphasis being placed on correcting the issue. Doesn't give me much confidence in purchasing from your store any longer, which is sad because I like Vons. Liked.
This ridiculous site wouldn't allow me to put Food Safety as a category.
