I walked in to The store(Circle K) around 1:50 am on 05/24/2020 to be received ask usual by the old employee. I put my ID on the counter and began to organize my payment for a pack of Marlboro Menthol Light !00 cigarettes. Which was in the form of 3x One Dollar (Bill), 16x Quarter (coin), 5 Dime (coin). ALL of which was laid out neatly in stacks ready to be accepted and stored as payment.
But I would not be writing to this Board had that been the end of the story. The employee looked me up and down before saying that he was going to refuse me money based on the fact he did not want to touch more that 4 coins. In what place is it accepted that because you don't want to touch currency that you are allowed to be a cashier. The man further said he was 70+ years old and mot in the best of health and did not want to contract Covid-19 from the coins.
Understandable as I am, I offered a compromise, I have an emergency credit-card and i used it after speaking with the employee that i intended to purchase 75% isopropyl alcohol Hand Sanitizer.(Circle K Brand). So, i got to my car get the card go back inside where he had placed both the Hand Sanitizer and Cigarettes on the order to which i replied,
"No just the Hand Sanitizer".
So i have the Hand Sanitizer in my hand and i have a handful of coins to which i was going to Sanitize, low and behold a change was in the air the old man sternly comments. "I don't care if you sanitize the coins im still not taking more than 4 coins."
Did you know that to make 99 cents with coins takes 9 coins. Regardless of the true reasoning behind his stubborn refusal of the coinage, if so worried about Covid-19 why not wear gloves when handling coins. I was shocked and appalled when he began to tell me to leave the story or he would call the police to throw me out. But that was after he shouted at me repeatedly and publicly embarrassed me in front of other customers. I had merely told him he has no right as an employee to refuse perfectly good USD currency that was not in any way overly excessive use of coinage.
To which he responded by threatening me with the police and shouting at me "Who do you think you are, Hah." over and over to which
I responded "I am the customer and the customer is always right. That is the service industry's go to model."
The old man then threatened me then i left the store after telling him that i should be calling the police to make him open his eyes to the legal currency that i had completely sanitized. I have never in my whole life been treated in such a way at any establishment i have ever visited. Disgusted, humiliated and threatened i left the store to drive 10 minutes to a speedway to which allowed me to purchase said cigarettes. Oh as reference I'm 25 5'4" 120lbs the man was probably 6'2"-6'3" 185-190lbs . I hope this man is immediately fired or laid off indefinitely. There is no excuse to A not take coins, B. Not wear PPE. As-well as blame, criticize and self appoint regulations of the currency that can be tendered because of improper PPE use. Again I would like to be emailed your response to this event along with your actions taken against this employee. You can reach me at Josh.[protected]@gmail.com or text 330_730_(9197)
