On 1 May 2023 my wife, myself, and my service dog went shopping first to Tractor Supply, then to Walmart, and finally to Food Lion. While in Food Lion on JA Cochran Bypass in Chester we walked around the store for about 15 minutes and then my service dog saw a bunch of kids running, got excited and barked. I immediately made him be quiet and there was no more barking. It was not for an extended period, and Andy remained calm and well behaved the rest of the time. This was approximately 5:30 to 5:50pm. We were about to check out when two store employees approached me as I turned around to get some bath oil and asked me for proof that my dog is trained as a service dog. I informed him that he was violating Federal Law and the ADA. It is noteworthy that he is also violating state law with that and that Service Dogs in Training have the same rights in South Carolina as fully trained Service Dogs and there is no other way to train them than taking them in public regularly. After I informed him of this and suggested he go back into his office and look it up he told me that I had to leave. My wife, myself and my service dog promptly left after I told him I was going to submit a complaint and he smugly gave me his name as the store manager Blake Adams. He was hostile and very disrespectful. Not that he can legally ask for proof of that either, but I am a 100% totally and permanently service-connected Army Combat and Disabled Veteran who served my country honorably and need my service dog in case I have an episode of vertigo from my Meniere’s Syndrome. He could have asked what service he provides, but that’s not what he did. He was rude, arrogant, disrespectful, and violated Federal and State Law, more specifically the ADA and I am furious. I have been a patron of Food Lion for many years, this one since it opened in Chester, and I want to know what corrective actions will be taken before I talk to my attorney. My dog is also trained to alert when he senses that I am having stability problems or am unresponsive on the ground. I have been having more Meniere’s Syndrome attacks lately and did have a dizzy spell while in the store, just prior to the very short and easily controlled barking incident.
Desired outcome: Civil Rights attorney contacted to discuss appropriate actions.
