I agree they shouldn't make you go to church, but on the other hand I don't see why it's that big a deal. Kind of like if I let you stay in my home and all I ask is that you hang out and listen to me talk for 45 minutes. Doesn't seem all that unfair. And Brenda, yes the fact that they receive government funds necessarily precludes any discrimination against anyone of other faiths or no faith at all. It's part of the separation clause.
The Salvation Army in Canada gets nearly $500, 000 from the province of British Columbia to run the ONLY homeless shelter and transition house in Langley, BC.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms clearly states every citizen has the right of association when it comes to religion. This inherently gives the citizen the right of DIS-association from any religion. No one in Canada is to deny services to anyone based on religious grounds. This Salvation Army denies access to both the shelter and transition house based on not being a Christian. They get government money, and this alone is to prevent the discrimination against non-Christians.
The Salvation Army is violating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. End of story. They are violating the laws of this country and the laws of their ow proselytizing. Not surprising, as in my experience, 99.9% of the Christians I've come across only thump their bible when it is convenient to them and to prevent anyone to know and name their sins.
