Holiday Inn - Condition of the hotel

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Gonzales, Texas for nine nights, May 19 to 27, 2023, room 216. We were extremely disappointed with this property. We stay at Holiday Inn Expresses a lot. Most of the properties we stay in are very nice for this level of lodging. This was the worst maintained property we have stayed in. It appears to be very poorly managed. It should be an embarrassment to Holiday Inn Express.

We checked in on Friday, May 19. We were not told when we checked in that they did not clean rooms unless you requested cleaning. When they didn’t clean the room on Saturday, we asked about it at the front desk and they said we needed to ask for housekeeping. I requested the room be cleaned every day. As requested, it was cleaned on Sunday through Friday. On Saturday morning, the housekeeper came to the door when we were getting dressed. We asked that she come back about noon or after, and she said she would. No one came back to clean the room that day. That night when we returned and found that it had not been cleaned, we went to the front desk to ask why it had not been cleaned. He said there was no note to say we wanted it cleaned. We explained that we had requested it be cleaned every day, and that the housekeeper said she would come back at noon or after to clean it. The man at the desk was very kind, said he was the only one working in the hotel, but he would take towels to our room and empty the trash. He did so, and even made the beds. We appreciated that. We asked him to have the owner or manager call us, but we never received a call.

The elevator did not work 4 out of the 9 days of our stay. After two days of it not working, when we inquired each day for the next several days about the status of the elevator they told us that a repairman was expect “today.” They made some repairs on day 7 of our stay. However, there was a note on the elevator telling guests to call the front desk to have them send the elevator to the second floor so we could come down.

We experienced the following issues as well:

Chipped tiles on the floor of the elevator. Black mold in the shower. Shower/tub did not drain well. We stood in water up to our ankles during the shower. Frayed carpet in the room. The pancake machine did not work the whole time we were there. The eggs were rubbery. On two mornings the cinnamon rolls seemed to be day old. I had to ask on three days for the hot water carafe to be filled (to make tea). The coffee cups provided were tiny, and the lids were for larger cups – so, basically no lids for hot liquid. The forks were put in the container with the tines up, so that anyone reaching for a fork could touch all of the forks’ tines with their hands, which is very unsanitary.

Desired outcome: We would like a partial refund of the rate we paid, as the rate charged was not commensurate with the quality and condition of the hotel.
