When you tried to trade it in, did you have any kind of proof that you purchased it from Zales? In order to trade in you must provide proof, like a sales reciept or diamond bond, that way the salesperson knows that you bought it from Zales and also how much your trade is worth. If you didn't have any documentation, they can't let you trade it in. I know it sounds silly to keep reciepts that long, but lots of people do especially for big purchases like diamond rings. If it was purchased originally from one of there regular stores and not at an outlet, you should have gotten a lifetime diamond bond with it. That is the little piece of paper that you bring in every 6 months when you get your diamond inspected. That would have also served as proof of purchase. Unfortunately, if you didn't have either one of those things, there's not much they could have done for you. Purchase information is not shared in the computer system between stores, and it is also purged every 5 years. There is a new system in place through their intranet site, and they can access that for you at most of the stores. If they do a customer search on their "ZNet" site, with your name and maybe some other information, they may be able to find that purchase.
