9/18/2009 My wife was harassed yesterday by a security guard at the Bristow, Va Safeway store. The guard accused my wife of theft from the seasonal items area inside the store. The security person demanded my wife to open her bag. My wife instructed the guard not to touch the bag since she did not know what he had in his hands or his hygiene. My wife asked the security person what she was being accused of, and was told that she stole a small pumpkin. My wife complied with the guard and opened every pocket of the small knapsack with the results nothing was taken from Safeway (the only purchase that was made at Safeway was grapes).
My wife was upset to the point of tears, during the course of the shakedown the manager entered the picture enquiring as what was going on. My wife explained to the manager and also requested the security person apologize to her. The security person refused to apologize and walked away saying nothing.
The security person was clearly in the wrong and offered no apology or explanation for what he supposedly "saw" .
The Safeway manager apologized on behalf of the security person. The security guard wasn't man enough to admit he made a mistake or try to explain what occurred.
I want to get the word out on this for other people to be aware of. We have experienced other incidents at this particular Safeway.
Our plan is to never return to this Safeway store.

Most retail (including grocery) have some very strict rules about when you can and cannot stop a customer. "I think I saw" doesn't cut it. I agree, the customer should complain up the line.
