WikiTree Mixed Experiences with WikiTree

As someone deeply passionate about genealogy, I understand the importance of accurate and collaborative platforms for tracing our roots. WikiTree, a free family tree builder, has garnered mixed reviews from users. While some praise its ease of use, peer-reviewed entries, and dedication to accuracy, others have expressed frustration with the community dynamics. Issues such as perceived elitism, control-freak behavior from leaders, and challenges in communication have left some users feeling discouraged. It's disheartening to hear about instances where simple mistakes are met with harsh responses, leading to blocked accounts and a lack of support. As a potential user, it's essential to weigh the benefits of collaboration and shared ancestry against the potential challenges of navigating a platform where conflicts and misunderstandings can arise. Despite its noble mission of creating a shared global tree, WikiTree seems to struggle with maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for all genealogy enthusiasts.

WikiTree Authoritarian, shady, and cult-like

Avoid this site like the plague! It's very corrupt and their management team conceals their names! (Don't let them fool you. There is absolutely a management team, but they hide behind "the community"). If one of the "leaders" decides to block or remove your account (which they do often), there is no appeals process, and no names of anyone to even appeal to. You'd have to complain or appeal to the same people who unfairly took your account over. Shady organization that will takeover your account, your personal information, and even your DNA information. They should really be shut down.

Recommendation: Stay away!

WikiTree Review of WikiTree: Pros and Cons of Using this Genealogy Site

I gotta say, WikiTree ain't all sunshine and rainbows. There's a whole bunch of folks on there who seem to have a chip on their shoulder, and they don't take kindly to even the smallest of slip-ups. I mean, come on, we're all human here, right? But if you make a mistake on WikiTree, you might as well have committed a capital crime. They'll block you from your account faster than you can say "genealogy".

Honestly, I'd recommend finding a different site if you're looking for a more laid-back experience. There's no need to subject yourself to all that stress and drama. There are plenty of other places where you can store your family tree without feeling like you're walking on eggshells.

And don't even get me started on the mediation team. It's like they're all in cahoots with the meanies. They'll swoop in and make a big fuss over the tiniest little thing, and before you know it, you're in the doghouse. It's just not fair, if you ask me.

But hey, maybe I'm just being too harsh. Maybe I'm the one who needs to lighten up a bit. After all, WikiTree does have its good points. For one thing, it's a great way to connect with other people who are interested in genealogy. And if you're lucky, you might even find a distant cousin or two.

So yeah, I guess what I'm saying is that WikiTree is a mixed bag. It's got its pros and cons, like anything else. But if you're looking for a stress-free experience, you might want to look elsewhere.

WikiTree Review of WikiTree: A Wild Ride with Some Bumps Along the Way

I gotta say, I joined WikiTree last year and it's been a wild ride. I mean, I made over 6,000 contributions and got a bunch of badges, so that's pretty cool. But then, things got a little heated on their G2G forum. I was just trying to share some links to tartan background images I made, based on official threadcounts for Swedish and Norwegian Tartans. But some folks accused me of fraud and spamming! Can you believe it?

Anyway, things got even weirder when my replies defending myself got hidden. And then, I couldn't answer any questions on the forum or send Private Messages or even edit my own Profile or Profiles I made for my relatives. It was like I was being punished for something I didn't even do!

But, I gotta give credit where credit is due. WikiTree has a pretty cool concept. It's all about building a family tree together, with contributions from people all over the world. And, they have a lot of resources to help you out, like their DNA tests and their extensive database of family records.

Overall, I'd say WikiTree is worth checking out. Just be careful on their forums, because things can get pretty heated pretty quickly. And, if you do run into any issues, don't be surprised if it takes a while to get them resolved. But hey, that's just how it goes sometimes, right?

WikiTree WikiTree Review: Endless Rules and Drama, Not Worth the Headache

WikiTree is a website that is run by some people who seem to have nothing better to do with their lives. They are always squabbling over petty things and have more rules than any legal system. If you make even the slightest mistake, they will kick you out without any reason. They will also force you to undergo "mentorship" if you do something wrong. This means that you have to read through endless pages of rules and procedures, which are not helpful in correcting any errors you may have made.

It seems that there are a few people on the site who want to "own" all the entries related to particular names for one name studies. They will find any reason to kick someone belonging to that family off the site. This can be very frustrating if you are trying to trace your family tree and you happen to belong to one of these families. It is not worth the headache and migraines that you will get from reading through all the rules and procedures.

However, if you are someone who loves reading through endless pages of rules and procedures, then this website may be for you. But if you are someone who wants to actually trace your family tree without all the drama and headaches, then it is best to stay away from WikiTree.

WikiTree Discover Your Family History with Wikitree: A Review of the Free Platform for Collaborative Genealogy Research

Wikitree is a great website for all those who want to explore their family history and connect with their relatives from all over the world. It's a free platform that allows you to collaborate with others and create a global family tree. The best part about Wikitree is that it has a vision to have one profile per person who has ever lived. This means that you don't have to start from scratch when researching your family history. You can benefit from the work done by others across the globe.

I have been using Wikitree for a while now, and I must say that it's an exciting experience to join in projects and collaborate with others. I have participated in the Appalachia Project and the England Project, and it has been a great learning experience. People are willing to give their time and talents to work together to meet the global goal. It's a great feeling to be a part of a community that is so passionate about family history.

One thing that I have noticed about Wikitree is that the standards are very high. The community takes great care to ensure that the information on the website is accurate and reliable. This is important when it comes to family history because you want to make sure that the information you are getting is correct. I have found the community to be very helpful and supportive. If you have any questions or need help with anything, there is always someone who is willing to assist you.

Overall, I would highly recommend Wikitree to anyone who is interested in family history. It's a great platform to connect with others and learn more about your family history. The website is easy to use, and the community is very welcoming. It's a great feeling to be a part of a community that is so passionate about family history.

WikiTree Wikitree Review: A Cool Idea with Some Messy Problems

Wikitree is a really cool idea, you know? Like, people can just add their ancestors to this one big tree and make it even better. But, like, sometimes it's just a mess, you know? There's so much stuff on there that's not even true and people who don't really know what they're doing just add whatever they want.

If you're just adding a few generations of your family, it's probably not a big deal. But if you've done some real research, you're gonna run into some problems. The people who run the site are really strict and if you don't follow their rules, they'll give you a hard time or even kick you out. And, like, they have all these secret rules that they don't even tell you about until you break them.

I used to be a big contributor to Wikitree, but I had to leave because of all the drama. And I'm not the only one - there are other people who used to be really involved who have spoken out about the same stuff. So, like, I'm not just making this up or anything.

WikiTree Nightmare Experience with WikiTree: Misinformation, Vandalism, and Hacking

WikiTree is a website that allows users to create family trees and connect with other genealogy enthusiasts. However, my experience with this site has been nothing short of a nightmare. The amount of misinformation on this site is staggering. It's as if the people running it have no idea what they're doing.

One of the biggest issues I've had with WikiTree is that it has screwed with my child profiles. I've had files orphaned with my name on them, and it's sickening. The misinformation on this site is so bad that it's vandalizing more correct information. I refuse to allow WikiTree to merge profiles that weren't going to be finished until I knew it was a legitimate site. I will not be threatened or abused by anyone.

To make matters worse, WikiTree has blocked my sign-in number and will not allow me to sign in. My 400 names have been vandalized and stolen, orphaned, and I have no way of deleting them. I've been hacked by these people, and the emails and threats don't stop. I can't even block them from my email address. Dirty comments have been written to offend me, and it's just shameful.

This site is an illegitimate, made-up, mixed-up crap! I will never use it again, and I urge others not to put their precious names into WikiTree. Spying on children will be reported, and I have already reported this. The admin cut the profile manager out and fudged it up with misinformation, mistakes in names/marriages, and WikiTree stole my info and won't stop blocking up my email address with threats.

This site will never be respected again. It's just wrong, wrong, wrong. I want the watchdog to smash those weak, pathetic souls! I give WikiTree a rating of below 0, and I urge everyone to get it off-line.

WikiTree Wikitree Review: Sexist, Bullying Behavior and Hidden Agenda

I just got blocked by Wikitree after 3 years and over 2000 profiles made. They said I was 'the subject of too many conflicts'. But the only conflicts I had were with the elites who didn't like that I put my females with their birth name as their 'current' name rather than their married name. All my ancestors are Scottish and even an assigned 'mentor' agreed Scottish women kept their birth names. My ancestors were married, gave birth and buried with their birth names. Married names were only used in census records. This is also consistent with Family Search where I also contribute a lot of work.

This shows the American-centric, sexist and bullying behavior of Wikitree Admin. I was always assigned numerous 'mentors' who did nothing but spy on me. I did nothing 'wrong' but was blocked every time I mentioned my using female birth names in Facebook comments. Too many times some random person would change their names and I would change them back. This is what a shared tree is about!

I never learned anything new on that site, never made a friend (most members were entitled bullies), or thanked for all my work apart from stupid badges that mean nothing.

It is a cult with a hidden agenda where you will experience a lot of grief & frustration. Don't waste your time!

WikiTree WikiTree: A Nightmare Experience and Potential Scam

I gotta say, my experience with WikiTree was a total nightmare. I was trying to learn more about my family history, but the people running the site were like a bunch of control freaks. They kept merging my entries with other people's without even asking me, and then they'd delete some of my stuff for no good reason. It was like they were just trying to mess with me.

After a couple of years of this nonsense, I was ready to throw in the towel. But then I got this really nasty message from another user, and that was the last straw. I tried to delete my account, but they wouldn't let me! Some mystery person who was apparently in charge of the site kept messaging me, saying I'd "contributed too much" to be allowed to leave. It was like they were trying to hold me hostage or something.

Eventually, they said the only thing I could do was ask them to make my data anonymous, but I couldn't actually leave. That was super creepy, and it really freaked me out. I tried everything I could think of to get my account deleted, but nothing worked.

Honestly, I think WikiTree is a total scam. They get people to contribute all this information, and then they refuse to let them leave. It's like a cult or something. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone.

Update 5/19/2023: So, it's been a year and a half since I wrote this review, and I've noticed something interesting. There have been a bunch of five-star reviews popping up lately, all talking about how great WikiTree is and how helpful the people running it are. But here's the thing: those reviews sound like they were written by the same person, and they all seem like they're trying to cover up the negative reviews like mine. It's pretty obvious that someone is trying to make WikiTree look better than it really is. Just something to keep in mind if you're thinking about using this site.

WikiTree Frustrating Experience with WikiTree: Issues with Communication, Accuracy, and Account Lockouts

I've been using WikiTree for a few months now, and I have to say, my experience has been quite frustrating. I recently tried to join the Data Doctors group, but was met with some unexpected challenges. I received an email from a woman who insisted that I participate in a 2-to-3 hour Zoom video conference with her. I declined the meeting, but she became more insistent and even accused me of being "dismissive" of her. When I checked Zoom, I found out that it would cost me $149 to use their video conferencing software, so I declined the meeting again. Unfortunately, this led to my rejection from the Data Doctors group, with the woman stating that I "need to learn more about primary sources for [my] managed profiles, especially those that are Pre-1700."

Shortly after this rejection, I was contacted by a mentor who praised my genealogy work and stated that I was a "super-experienced genealogist." However, despite this praise, I was blocked from logging into my account in December of 2022. WikiTree claimed that my account was locked due to my failure to communicate with the mentor, even though I had email proof that I did communicate with them. Additionally, WikiTree claimed that I was flagged for mentoring because of my use of "not recommended" HTML tags, even though I don't use HTML tags at all. This reason was completely different from the one given by my mentor.

It took 9 days of back-and-forth emails with WikiTree before they assigned me a new mentor and lifted the block from my account. However, just a month later, I was locked out of my account again because I failed to write to the new mentor every 7 days. It seems like they're just looking for reasons to lock people out of their accounts.

As for the information on WikiTree itself, I've found that a lot of the profiles in my direct line conflict with information in historic records. There are even pages where the birth-marriage-death information in the header section conflicts with what is written in the bio and tagged with sources. I wouldn't trust about half of what I've found on WikiTree to be accurate.

Overall, my experience with WikiTree has been frustrating and disappointing. The site seems to have a lot of issues with communication and accuracy, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for reliable genealogy information.

WikiTree Great Genealogy Resource, But Beware of Strict Moderators: A Review of Wikitree.com

wikitree.com is a really good website. The layout is easy to use and it's simple to find what you're looking for. However, the people who run the site can be pretty mean. If you don't do what they say, they'll kick you off the site. It's not fair because sometimes they're wrong and you're right. But that's just how it is.

Overall, I would recommend using wikitree.com if you're interested in genealogy. Just be careful not to upset the mods or you might get banned.

WikiTree Review of Wikitree: Pros and Cons for Genealogy Research and DNA Comparison

Wikitree is a pretty good website if you want to find leads and compare DNA. However, if you are looking to build a tree that is super accurate, then this might not be the best place to do it. You might want to look elsewhere for that.

One thing that I noticed about Wikitree is that when you post a question or report a situation on the G2G boards, it can be a bit like any other social media site. People can be pretty harsh and critical, so you might want to be careful about what you post and how you phrase it.

That being said, there are definitely some tools on Wikitree that can be really helpful. For example, the DNA comparison feature is pretty cool. You can compare your DNA with other people on the site and see if you have any matches. This can be a great way to find relatives that you didn't know you had.

Overall, I would say that Wikitree is worth checking out if you are interested in genealogy. Just be aware that it might not be the best place to build a super accurate tree, and that you might encounter some negativity on the G2G boards. But if you use the tools that are helpful and avoid the rest, you should be able to get some good use out of the site.

WikiTree Review: WikiTree - A Reliable Resource for Tracing Your Family History

I gotta say, WikiTree is a pretty cool website for tracing your family history. But, I gotta admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. I mean, who wants all their personal information out there for the whole world to see? But, after using the site for a while, I gotta say, it's pretty neat.

One thing that sets WikiTree apart from other genealogy sites is that you can't just go in and delete information. At first, I thought this was a bit strange. I mean, what if someone puts in something wrong? But, then I realized that this is actually a good thing. It means that the information on WikiTree is more reliable than other sites, because it's been verified by other users.

Now, I know some people might be worried about their privacy. I mean, who wants all their personal information out there for the whole world to see? But, I gotta say, I don't think that's really a problem with WikiTree. Sure, your name and some basic information is out there, but it's not like anyone can just go in and see all your personal details. Plus, you can always choose to keep certain information private if you want.

Overall, I think WikiTree is a great resource for anyone interested in tracing their family history. It's easy to use, and the community is really helpful. Plus, it's nice to know that the information you find on the site is reliable. So, if you're looking to learn more about your family history, I definitely recommend giving WikiTree a try.
