Acting and Modeling Agency
This agency leads hopeful actors or models on by telling them they have "potential" but cannot be "placed" until the hopeful purchases an expensive block of acting and/or modeling lessons from the agency.
The company has a website that allows hopeful actors or models to submit photos. Hopefuls submit the photos, then the company contact them, says the agency is interested in the photos, and invites the hopeful to an open audition.
The audition begins with a room full of hopefuls and many parents. The hopefuls are all shapes and sizes. Many of them clearly do not have any real hope of really becoming actors or models. The "agent" (Justin Brown) tells everyone in the room that the agency will evaluate everyone's potential "honestly" and will relay this information to each candidate "honestly."
After a short discussion about modeling and acting (and some truly good advice about hard work and being responsible for your own career), each hopeful is called into a room where they complete a cold read and have their picture taken. Then they are sent home with instructions to call back at a certain date and time where they will be told "honestly" about their acting or modeling potential.
The hopeful calls when instructed and is told how wonderful they are, how much potential they have, then invited in for a "one-on-one" so the agency can discuss placing them. The hopeful goes in for the one-on-one visit where they are told again that they are wonderful and have much potential, but the agency won't consider placing them until they purchase and complete a package of modeling or acting lessons ranging from $1, 500 to $3, 000 to start.
My guess is that every single hopeful is told the same thing and that no one is "honestly" told they don't have potential. The whole point of the process is to make the hopefuls feel unique and special so they will purchase the lessons. After all, they got called back for a one-on-one! It's the same gimmick used by Barbizon, only this company tries to reel the hopeful in a little more carefully than Barbizon does. The salespeople use flattery and slowly play on hopefuls' dreams in order to sell them the lessons. By the way, lessons obtained elsewhere (including the University of Texas) are a no go - the agency won't sign / place you unless you take THEIR lessons. The next step in the process appears to be the requirement to purchase professional photos from their photograph as there will be something "wrong" with the hopeful's portfolio photos, regardless of who shot them.
As I was waiting for my daughter, I heard two young teenage girls telling their father how they could not "graduate" until they purchased just one more class. I heard the father exasperatedly ask, "Is THIS the last one?"
I checked out the agency's "acclaimed" acting and modeling teachers on IMDB and elsewhere. Most had brief acting or modeling careers. The acting teachers had bit parts or parts as extras in movies and TV, but no roles of any real significance.
The agency never attempts to hide the fact that they are a school. It's posted on their bulletin board and in the brochure they hand to hopefuls after the cold read. The rip off is the method that this agency uses to manipulate hopefuls through flattery and promises of placement in order to sell them lessons. Many of these hopefuls obviously don't have a chance of really becoming actors or models even after the expensive lessons and I have to wonder the percentage of those who really get some work vs. the percentage of those who never get any work.
I wrote the original complaint above and would like to respond to the Agency's comments. My daughter and I visited twice with the Wilhelmina Brown Agency beginning with the "open call" and ending with the "call back". No, we did NOT visit with the Academy named above, we specifically visited with Wilhelmina Brown. Justin Brown (OWNER of Wilhelmina Brown) conducted the main portion of the open call meeting.
Regarding the Academy mentioned above, if you will visit manta.com at http://www.manta.com/c/mt1cr9r/texas-acting-modeling-acad to review the business profile of the Texas Acting and Modeling Academy, you will see that Justin Brown, owner of Wilhelmina Brown, is also named as "Principal" of this "school". Texas Corporates, a profile of companies in Texas, lists Justin Brown as "Manager" of the Texas Acting and Modeling Academy and also lists the company under the status of "forfeited existence" (temporary forfeiture of corporate privileges) for failure to make proper filings and/or pay assessments owed to the State of Texas . See http://www.texascorporates.com/corp/955082.html . Justin Brown has two separate LinkedIn pages. In one, he lists himself as current "Owner" of the Texas Acting and Modeling Academy. In the other, he lists himself as current "Owner and Operator" of Wilhelmina Brown Austin.
The responder is correct in that no "legitimate" modelling agency charges for classes. However, Justin Brown is clearly the "owner" of both the Wilhelmina Brown Agency AND the Texas Acting and Modeling Academy, and both operate from the same address. I personally witnessed at the "call back" that hopefuls will not receive bookings through the Agency unless they take classes.
I am not the only person who has commented on the behavior of this agency as there are testimonies from different persons on Model Mayhem, scam report, and Austin Improv, among others. If this comment box allows, I will post the links. If not, simply search these sites for Wilhelmina Brown. We made the brownie and put it in for the time that said on the box and it burnt and crumbled every wear. It went hard straight away and tasted horrible wouldn't get this product again.
Justin Brown learned this from his former acting school (West Modeling & Acting School) formerly located in Westlake, CA. He too was ripped off by his former teacher Dana West. And apparently picked up a thing or two from her. This is the biggest scam. Justin Brown is a thief and should not be trusted!
After reviewing the above complain it looks like this individual never visited with our agency but looks like they were referred to an open call for Texas Acting and Modeling Academy that was located at that address. Wilhelmina Brown Agency does not charge for classes and makes money on commissions earned from paid jobs. Individuals looking to get started in Acting but have no experience or training are usually not able to compete with professional working actors who are trained and have lots of experience so this is where it is good for new talent to work on their craft before trying to compete for paid jobs or seeking representation.
As for the agency we will never charge you for acting classes and if we feel that acting classes may be appropriate for your situation, we will refer you to people who can help. I hope this helps clarify any confusion that people may have about the process or our company.
Funny because my friend had same experience and you ripped her off for $3500 for your bogus classes, you made her pay in advance for all the classes and she only took one. She then realized the classes were totally worthless and instructor was unqualified. She asked for a refund and NOPE. Sorry, no refunds! You stole $3500. Same scam - "we cant place you unless..." as if you have some magic door to get her work. All the casting directors in this town know you are a con-artist! And now, as usual you have changed the name of your company. First it was "JB Models and Talent." Then Wilhelmina-Brown. Now it's "the Brown Agency".
SAME SCAM. Why do you keep changing your name and moving your office HUH?
