General Terrible Treatment
Just thought I should give a little shout out to Advanced Realty Property Management in Boone, North Carolina. They are hands down the worst realty company I have ever had to deal with. We have been having issues with the people I got to sublet my lease and they have been, to put it nicely, uncooperative. Today I tried to speak with them about the issue of the subleasers not paying the rent. I was told that they were unaware there was a problem until a few weeks ago, which I have a hard time believing. I was one day late on rent one time and they called me to ask about it. Also, every time I went in to pay rent and one of my roommates hadn’t yet, they told me to remind them about the late fees and that there would be legal action if it wasn’t paid, so I don’t find it believable that they were oblivious to the fact that these people hadn’t paid rent for 3 months until a couple weeks ago. I was getting nowhere with the owner (Tammy is her name), so I asked if my Mom could give her a call to clarify a few things. My mom called and said she was greeted with the following sentence, “Your daughter put crackheads in this house and I’m so sick of dealing with this, you’re like the sixth person I’ve had to talk to about this.” Then, after my mother tried to have a rational conversation with her, Tammy kept talking over her and eventually HUNG UP on my mother. This is ludicrously unproffessinal, but I can’t file a complaint because Tammy is the owner and operator of this company. Also, I would like to point out that she has to approve any subleasers I find, which she did, so it is childish of her to blame this situation on me.
I am under the impression that the realty company has to exhaust every feasible method of getting these people to pay the rent before they stick me with the charges, but they have said that they’re not even going to attempt to take them to small claims court. I am currently talking to the Boone Police Department to see if they have to try and take these people to court before charging me.
Let me give you a little background of my other experiences with this company. We toured the house during the summer, during which it looked fine. However, during the following months, the tenants proceeded to wreck the house. They laid a mattress over the drain in the water heater room, causing mold to spread throughout the basement. They also left a layer of trash in the front and back yard. The carpets were disgusting as well. We were not informed of any of this damage prior to moving in, and when we moved in we made note of it all and turned it in to the realty company. You’d expect them to promptly take action to fix these problems, right? Wrong. They told us they would replace all of the carpet (which was covered in stains and dirt) but ended up only replacing the carpet in the hallway and living room, neglecting the bedrooms. When the people came to replace the carpets, we had made an appointment for 9am. The carpet people showed up 45 minutes early, so we hadn’t had a chance to move all of our things off the carpeted area yet. We told them to come back at 9, you know, when our appointment was. They were fine with this. Not five minutes later, one of the realtors (Macy, I believe) came storming into the house unannounced and without knocking or anything. Note that at this point we had been in the house for less than a week and weren’t completely moved in yet. She started yelling about how they pay for these appointments and if we’re not going to be ready then don’t schedule an appointment and that we could pay for it if we wanted to act this way. We pointed out to her that they were really early and she scoffed and said “Oh, so you’re going to have all this off the floor by 9? Really?” And we said yes (and it was all moved by 9). She also proceeded to tell us that “you can’t live like this in these conditions, ” implying that our house was messy. Well of course it’s messy, WE’RE STILL MOVING IN.
Then she saw a broken hookah on the floor near the trash can. There was also a bag of tea leaves on the table. She proceeded to accuse us of having weed in the house and tell us we had to “get that stuff out of here.” I couldn’t help but laugh. The bag still had the label and price sticker on it from the store. We even brought it over to her office later and she thought we were lying still.
Anyway, we had to eventually get our parents to contact them about repairs since they wouldn’t do anything when we contacted them about it. The first thing they said to our parents was “Oh, well they’re drinking. There’s liquor bottles in the house and there was marijuana too. They’re not taking care of themselves or the premises.” Again, totally avoiding the fact that they are responsible for repairs and the fact that we are all adults of age to consume alcohol. That has nothing to do with the fact that repairs needed to be done and they were shirking them.
This is a college town, so this company likes to prey on people who don’t know their rights. They overcharge and are, quite frankly, the rudest people I’ve ever dealt with. My roommate living in the basement ended up having to move out because they did a half ### repair that didn’t fix the mold problem and it caused her to have several asthma attacks. We actually paid to consult with a lawyer about this and we were told that in this town, tenants almost never win against Advanced Realty. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, they are such a monopoly with so many loopholes that it is nearly impossible to win, even if your health is at stake and your living conditions are hideous.
They have accused me of not paying rent (which I have all the receipts for), accused myself and my roommates of doing drugs on the premises, refused to do necessary repairs, did half-### repairs when they were done, and treated me and my family with complete disrespect.
In short, I am appalled that people like this are allowed to run a company this way, and I am even more disgusted that there is no one to complain to since the owner herself is the biggest problem. I can only hope that the good people of the internet help me get the word out, because this kind of behavior (from ADULTS for christ’s sake) is unacceptable and childish and rude. They take advantage of college aged students and treat them and their properties like ###. If nothing else comes of this, I hope you at least take away that you should never rent from these people if you should happen to live in Boone, North Carolina. They don’t care about you and they will neglect any concerns or needs that you have.
